Record-Release Roundup
Sultry jazz singer Rebecca Jade (Siren's Crush) will have the release party for her debut album The Jade Element at Anthology on July 8.

Blogs: Who Reads 'Em?
A lack of commentary doesn't necessarily mean a lack of readership. I was stunned to be informed that one recent Reader blog entry had already scored 5,000 page views, even tho the entry's comment field was a ghost town. I'm not privvy to the daily view stats but, whenever a fellow staffer DOES provide numbers (usually by way of encouraging me to write more view-generating stuff), I'm almost always amazed at how much activity happens on the Reader site. I think the whole "citizen journalist" experiment, opening up the Reader to user-generated content, has been pretty successful. I really enjoy most all neighborhood blog posts, even if I don't usually agree with which entries get the prize/paycheck nods. Compared to the dead zones that many other newspapers host online, the Reader site has a few cracklin' good reads almost every day. I'd hang out here even if I wasn't already working the staff side ---

When Is a Band Reunion NOT a Reunion?
No, Ron Wood would not qualify to tour sans-Stones as "The Rolling Stones." His bandmates are too famous and pivotal to write out -- Wood COULD, however, adopt Bill Wyman's "Stone Alone" moniker without arousing mass ire...

Why Porn Movies Deserve To Die Out
Yes, you read it "for free online" -- but your click on this page registers as yet another page view for this website, which is how newspaper sites sell online ads, which is how a handful of papers like the Reader remain successful (and still "in print") while so many others have (or will soon) vanish from the public view --- It's not easy to pull off, and few could guess just how many people at the Reader are working their arses off all day and night to keep the fresh (and click-generating) content coming. But, so far, the two Reader incarnations (print and online) are still making the best of their respective strengths, maintaining a presence on the streets of San Diego AND on 'puter screens all over the planet. Both incarnations still keep a fair number of people employed, even if there are fewer of us, all probably doing three or four times more work now than our jobs once required ---

When Is a Band Reunion NOT a Reunion?
I'll preface my reply to your query with another query - how many randomly surveyed music fans would be able to name one, two, or all three deceased Badfinger players? I'd venture to guess not very many -- but ask the same people to name Ronnie Wood's bandmates in the Rolling Stones, and chances are almost everybody would instantly name Mick 'n' Keith, and maybe a coupla other players from the Stones' age. Jason Mershon actually has a solid argument about the level of fame of a bandmember being "replaced" - he just misses the mark by assuming Alex Chilton and John Kay (Steppenwolf) lacked such name recognition. I'd rather play Badfinger music with most if not all of the players from the 70s albums I treasure - but I'm happy to go see Joey any time he trots those songs, including many of his own, to a venue near me. He may be Last Man Standing, but he's still the Man when it comes to honoring that music in concert --

OK, Mr. Abrams, Super 8’s a Hit — Back to Star Trek Now?
HaHa - as someone whose (moderately successful) career as an author, reporter, cartoonist, and comic book publisher essentially began with articles I wrote and illustrated for early '70s Trek fanzines like FIRST (Friends for the Immediate Revival of Star Trek), I'll take that as a compliment!

Record-Release Roundup
Grant Clarkson's CD release party for Dearly Beloved happens July 7 at Dizzy's. "The album is basically acoustic trio jazz standards. Richard Sellers, Sky Ladd and I had done a lot of gigs together as a trio and talked about recording for awhile. I pulled it together in part to test acoustic recording of the upright bass, before recording an album of original compositions later this year." Also, Spider Fever will release their Cave Punk 7" on July 21 at the Casbah.

"The" Nervous Wreckords
Outtakes: WHO IN YOUR FAMILY DO YOU TAKE AFTER? Karscig: “My dad, because I’m pretty laid back.” Matheson: “My dad. I’m pretty reserved and quiet for the most part, but put a drink in me and I’m everyone’s best friend.” Cate: “My mother has a wonderful sense of humor, so I would like to believe it’s her.” EVER BEEN FIRED? Karscig: “I worked at a really nice French restaurant when I was seventeen, and I asked for my eighteenth birthday off, two weeks in advance. I remember coming in to look at the schedule two days before my birthday, and I was scheduled. I confronted my French a-hole of a boss about it…he said ‘if you don’t show up to work, don’t ever come back.’ That was the last day I saw him.” Matheson: “I worked at this jewelry store for a month. One day, a couple of necklaces got stolen, and the manager accused me of stealing them. I got pissed and told her off, so she fired me.” IN YOUR WILL, WHO GETS YOUR COOLEST STUFF? Karscig: “I can’t list, because I don’t want people who read this to rob me.” Matheson: “Probably my niece and nephew, Gabrielle and Bourne. I don’t really have much stuff, but I guess they’d get all my music gear and my record collection.” Cate: “My twin sis always has first dibs on anything, however I don’t think she really wants my prized Depth Charge bass pedal.” WHAT REMAINS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? Karscig: “Visit Thailand.” Matheson: “I’ve always wanted to go to Vietnam.” Cate: “Pretty much everything that The Most Interesting Man in the World has already done.” FEARS OR PHOBIAS? Karscig: “Movies with Kevin Costner.” Matheson: “I have a huge claustrophobia issue.” Cate: “Missing the last few minutes of my favorite shows because the DVR cut off early.” TELL US SOMETHING WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? Karscig: “I have the same birthday as Beethoven.” Matheson: “I played Division 1 college soccer.” Cate: “I like to eat my Skittles in order from my least favorite to most. I’m a ‘Save the best for last’ kind of gal.”

R.I.P., Larry "Wild Man" Fischer, Frank Zappa's Discovery
Regarding the song Wild Man said was inspired by meeting James Call of the Penetrators at a local record store, James sent me a message today: "Nice to read of the song Wild Man made up about me. He sang it to me at one point when he was interviewing me. 'James, shall a make up a song about you?' Of course! A sweet memory."

I'd hang out here even if I wasn't already working the staff side ---— July 2, 2011 1:35 p.m.
When Is a Band Reunion NOT a Reunion?
No, Ron Wood would not qualify to tour sans-Stones as "The Rolling Stones." His bandmates are too famous and pivotal to write out -- Wood COULD, however, adopt Bill Wyman's "Stone Alone" moniker without arousing mass ire...— July 1, 2011 10:37 a.m.
Both incarnations still keep a fair number of people employed, even if there are fewer of us, all probably doing three or four times more work now than our jobs once required ---— June 30, 2011 6:05 p.m.
He may be Last Man Standing, but he's still the Man when it comes to honoring that music in concert --— June 30, 2011 5:53 p.m.
OK, Mr. Abrams, Super 8’s a Hit — Back to Star Trek Now?
HaHa - as someone whose (moderately successful) career as an author, reporter, cartoonist, and comic book publisher essentially began with articles I wrote and illustrated for early '70s Trek fanzines like FIRST (Friends for the Immediate Revival of Star Trek), I'll take that as a compliment!— June 30, 2011 8:07 a.m.
I pulled it together in part to test acoustic recording of the upright bass, before recording an album of original compositions later this year." Also, Spider Fever will release their Cave Punk 7" on July 21 at the Casbah.— June 30, 2011 5:48 a.m.

I’m a ‘Save the best for last’ kind of gal.”— June 30, 2011 3:48 a.m.
A sweet memory."— June 18, 2011 7:53 p.m.
