Is SWRV the MTV of Old?
Since San Diego is one of the first cities to have the SWRV interactive programming network, local bands should check out this report of Dave's and then submit their videos to Music Choice as suggested. Some great local-centric video production goes on around town - Laura Roppe's anthem about cancer survival "I'm Still Here" has earned over a million YouTube views. The Wrong Trousers racked up over 630,000 views of their cover of the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star." If enough locals submit vids, and if viewers choose programming by locals, what a great opportunity to bring the San Diego music scene into countless homes and mobile devices....

None
It's because of spam-crazy a-holes like this, flooding the entire Reader site with crap, that we'll probably have to go back to solving captcha puzzles just to post a comment -

Jefferson Jay's "Gift to be Alive" Debuts Nov. 11 @ The Griffin
The new OB venue Mother's Saloon (formerly Dream Street) just opened, and features shuffleboard games, pool tables, several flatscreen TVs, craft beer, specialty bacon-themed dishes (it's on Bacon Street), and a video jukebox.

Murals in the Barrio
Holy doody, Roody, this is cover-feature quality! I've been fascinated with the murals ever since my first CA car broke down some thirty-odd years ago, just as I came off the bridge and coasted to a stop nearby. I think my mouth was probably hanging open in awe as I walked the concrete canvasses, marveling at the divinely expressive artworks. I for one would love to see followup blog reports on this - perhaps interviews with some of the artists returning to their work for the restoration project? How about a video report from the Park?

Dueling Hoovers: Larry Cohen vs. Clint Eastwood
The Reader's own Matthew Alice illustrator Rick Geary wrote and illustrated a hardcover graphic novel called "J. Edgar Hoover: A Graphic Biography," one of the best "reality" comics I've ever come across (and that includes the 150 or so bio comic books that I'VE created!) BTW, Hoover and his longtime partner Tolson have a lot of San Diego history, as chronicled in a couple of the Reader's Famous Former Neighbors comic strips (with artwork based on photos of the actual locales):

Dueling Hoovers: Larry Cohen vs. Clint Eastwood
If I had any doubts about the stellar value of your contributions to the Reader, Mr. Marks, you've won me over by headlining my favorite offbeat filmmaker Larry Cohen, perpetrator of inexplicable and wonderfully wonky masterpieces like "God Told Me To" (basically concerning an outer space hermaphrodite Jesus with a pulsating vagina on his chest who tells people like Andy Kaufman, in his first film role, to kill everyone in sight). I've written about Mr. Cohen and followed his career for over a quarter century - his recent stuff for the Masters of Horror TV series is just as thrilling for me as seeing "Black Caesar" rub shoe polish on a white guy's face and making him sing "Mammy" before killing him, or marveling at Cohen's ability to make a whole movie about a flying serpent in NYC (Q), with barely a glimpse of the titular creature actually flying around NYC ---

Carmen Caserta ♥s Tori Amos
Outtakes: WHO IN YOUR FAMILY DO YOU TAKE AFTER? “My mother is hypersensitive, and I definitely have some of that, albeit to a lesser degree. My dad is stubborn and prideful, and I have some of that, too.” ANY FEARS OR PHOBIAS? “Ironically, considering the title and concept of my album The Hive, I’m terrified of bees. If we’re talking about emotional fears, they’re endless, but I try to live my life informed by a calm trusting and courage, rather than living in fear.” FAVORITE SURPRISE? “I was about seven or eight years old when my mother pulled up alongside me on her way home, rolled down the window, and called me to the car. When I got to the window, she whispered, ‘Guess what I have for you? A tutu!’ I almost died and went to heaven. It was the most perfect poufy pink tutu ever!”

The Loma Theatre:
1941
in 1979
Ha, thanks! Anyone interested in more photos of long-gone San Diego theaters can check out the San Diego Historic Neon page on Facebook (
http://www.facebook.com/SanDiegoHistoricNeon
), and/or the Reader's own cover features about downtown's old grindhouse moviehouse row (
http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/bands/2008/…
), the complete history of every drive-in theater ever to operate in SD (
http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/bands/2008/…
), and the local-centric history of the Pussycat Theatre chain, whose operators also owned (and had apartments at) the long-gone Hotel San Diego (

Why I Hate Spielberg #4,695: The Ferris Wheel Reversal in
1941
Well then let's hope Mr. Elliott ends up with a winning ticket! I volunteer my services as a mural painter, if he wants a wall of the lobby paying tribute to shining stars of then and now -- Speaking of then, here's the Loma on the weekend 1941 debuted -

The Wrong Trousers racked up over 630,000 views of their cover of the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star." If enough locals submit vids, and if viewers choose programming by locals, what a great opportunity to bring the San Diego music scene into countless homes and mobile devices....— November 10, 2011 5:04 p.m.
The Japatul Fire Station: For Jerry Schad
A great tribute to our fallen Reader comrade - thanks for posting!— November 6, 2011 12:50 p.m.
None
It's because of spam-crazy a-holes like this, flooding the entire Reader site with crap, that we'll probably have to go back to solving captcha puzzles just to post a comment -— November 6, 2011 7:24 a.m.
Jefferson Jay's "Gift to be Alive" Debuts Nov. 11 @ The Griffin
The new OB venue Mother's Saloon (formerly Dream Street) just opened, and features shuffleboard games, pool tables, several flatscreen TVs, craft beer, specialty bacon-themed dishes (it's on Bacon Street), and a video jukebox.— November 6, 2011 1:02 a.m.
How about a video report from the Park?— November 3, 2011 2:38 a.m.
Dueling Hoovers: Larry Cohen vs. Clint Eastwood
The Reader's own Matthew Alice illustrator Rick Geary wrote and illustrated a hardcover graphic novel called "J. Edgar Hoover: A Graphic Biography," one of the best "reality" comics I've ever come across (and that includes the 150 or so bio comic books that I'VE created!) BTW, Hoover and his longtime partner Tolson have a lot of San Diego history, as chronicled in a couple of the Reader's Famous Former Neighbors comic strips (with artwork based on photos of the actual locales): http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1634914549… http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1634914589…— November 2, 2011 12:05 p.m.
Cohen and followed his career for over a quarter century - his recent stuff for the Masters of Horror TV series is just as thrilling for me as seeing "Black Caesar" rub shoe polish on a white guy's face and making him sing "Mammy" before killing him, or marveling at Cohen's ability to make a whole movie about a flying serpent in NYC (Q), with barely a glimpse of the titular creature actually flying around NYC ---— November 2, 2011 11:58 a.m.
It was the most perfect poufy pink tutu ever!”— November 2, 2011 9:53 a.m.
The Loma Theatre: 1941 in 1979
Ha, thanks! Anyone interested in more photos of long-gone San Diego theaters can check out the San Diego Historic Neon page on Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/SanDiegoHistoricNeon ), and/or the Reader's own cover features about downtown's old grindhouse moviehouse row ( http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/bands/2008/… ), the complete history of every drive-in theater ever to operate in SD ( http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/bands/2008/… ), and the local-centric history of the Pussycat Theatre chain, whose operators also owned (and had apartments at) the long-gone Hotel San Diego ( http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/bands/2010/… ) -— November 1, 2011 9:14 a.m.
Why I Hate Spielberg #4,695: The Ferris Wheel Reversal in 1941
Well then let's hope Mr. Elliott ends up with a winning ticket! I volunteer my services as a mural painter, if he wants a wall of the lobby paying tribute to shining stars of then and now -- Speaking of then, here's the Loma on the weekend 1941 debuted - http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=2408278483…— October 29, 2011 8:50 a.m.
