Gary Ra’chac, Keith Moon, and a Sofa
Gary’s Facebook page includes a Zeenut baseball card dated 1928, featuring Max Rachac as a pitcher for the Sacramento Senators – I’m no card expert, but looks genuine to me -

Gary Ra’chac, Keith Moon, and a Sofa
Outtakes: MOST IMPRESSIVE SAN DIEGO SINGER? “Ron Silva of the Crawdaddys.” BEST THING YOU EVER HAD TO LET GO OF? “My innocence.” BIGGEST LIE YOU EVER TOLD? “I love you.” WHO IN YOUR FAMILY DO YOU TAKE AFTER? “My dad, by virtue of his music, his hair, and his humor, in that order.” FAVORITE VACATION SPOT? “When I’m not in San Diego or New York, I spend as much time as possible at the Malibanga Ranch, up top of Topanga Canyon in Malibu. It’s a slice of old rustic California overlooking the Pacific, a mere 22 miles from the heart of downtown Los Angeles.” ANY CELEBRITIES IN YOUR FAMILY? “My great uncle Max Ra’chac was a professional baseball pioneer. In the 1920s, he played in the Pacific Coast League as a pitcher for San Francisco.” WHAT WOULD YOUR GRADE SCHOOL TEACHER SAY ABOUT YOU? “I see you still have the hair going on.” MOST EFFECTIVE PICKUP LINE? “Voulez-vous faire la promenade du chien [Do you want to walk the dog?].” ANY FEARS OR PHOBIAS? “As a child, I had coulrophobia, a fear of clowns, but I think I out grew it.” IF YOU COULD CHOOSE YOUR NICKNAME? “Alias.” THREE THINGS WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU? 1. “My uncle Clifford and Aunt Mary were best friends with Walt Disney and his wife.” 2. “I was the sole actor in the first film directed by Mick Garris [The Stand, Batteries Not Included, Psycho IV: The Beginning, etc.].” 3. “As a kid, I met Ringo Starr at Apple Records on Savile Row in London, when he was still a Beatle.”

We Are Stars: Subsurfer
Outtakes: FIRST TIME DRUNK? Montalbano: “I was 13, and me and my friend drank Vodka and chased it with milk. We went to the local fair with our girlfriends, and I threw up on one of the rides.” Fernandez: “When I was a little kid, my dad used to give me a whiskey bottle and shot glass as a remedy for a toothache. He would say ‘Don’t drink it just let it numb your tooth.’ I got toothaches quite frequently.” Jones: “It was the last week of sixth grade, and my parents had a lot of nice expensive wine and hard liquor, so we opened up the Southern Comfort, the Chardonnay, and some Pinot Grigio and poured them all into the bong.” Patus: “I was fifteen, and my uncle decided to teach us a lesson by letting us mix our own drinks at his house. We hurled all over his stuff, so I guess we taught him the lesson.” WHAT REMAINS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? Montalbano: “I want to surf the gold coast of Australia.” Fernandez: “Tour Ireland with my wife.” Jones: “Make contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence.” Patus: “See as much of the world as I can.” ANY FEARS OR PHOBIAS? Montalbano: “I hate being stuck in the middle of a crowd with no drink in my hand.” Fernandez: “Bees! Don’t go there, or I’m out of here.” Jones: “Cockroaches make me scream like a little girl.” Patus: “Having my teeth fall out.”

Chuck Norris VS Wyatt Earp: Legends of the Palms Hotel @12th & Island
Since this was posted, I found out that Donald Dodd, aka Bear, apparently passed away not too long ago, as have a couple of the other People of the Palms. A relative of Dodd's contacted me and is sending some photos of his uniquely decorated room at the Palms, where the Christmas decorations stayed up all year long and the stereo always had Santana music wafting down the halls and out his window overlooking 12th -

Chuck Norris VS Wyatt Earp: Legends of the Palms Hotel @12th & Island
Thanks to this article, a couple of the featured People of the Palms have contacted me, folks I haven't come across in 30 years! Ain't the internet grand? Looks like we'll be doing at least one more chapter of Legends of the Palms Hotel ---

Chuck Norris VS Wyatt Earp: Legends of the Palms Hotel @12th & Island
Update/correction: Current owner Sandor Shapery is actually a FORMER SOHO board member, tho he was referenced as a current member when this article's section on his Hotel purchase was written. I'm told his plans are to do major restoration work to the Hotel, including possibly rebuilding the long-gone tower elements on the roof's southwest side. Earlier this year, photos were taken at the Palms for a designation report being written for the National Register, in hopes of securing "historic" status for the building.

Before It Was the Gaslamp: Downtown's Grindhouse Row (updated 8-22-09)
One-time Aztec Theater owner Charlie Smith has passed away. His business partner Wes Andrews, aka Andy, passed away awhile ago as well, so Smith was the last surviving person who operated the Aztec as a theater owner. Terry Wiggins, who leased the Aztec and other theaters from Walnut Properties during its final days, is happily still with us. He's now one of the last surviving links to the the operators of downtown San Diego's long-gone grindhouse theater row.

Chuck Norris VS Wyatt Earp: Legends of the Palms Hotel @12th & Island
One of the Palms' former owners contacted me, and we're doing an in-depth interview about their tenure at the old Hotel that will be posted soon as an addendum to this feature --

Gary Ra’chac, Keith Moon, and a Sofa
Gary’s Facebook page includes a Zeenut baseball card dated 1928, featuring Max Rachac as a pitcher for the Sacramento Senators – I’m no card expert, but looks genuine to me - http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.28258838…— January 12, 2012 4:37 p.m.
“As a kid, I met Ringo Starr at Apple Records on Savile Row in London, when he was still a Beatle.”— January 11, 2012 12:34 p.m.

Don’t go there, or I’m out of here.” Jones: “Cockroaches make me scream like a little girl.” Patus: “Having my teeth fall out.”— January 4, 2012 11:06 p.m.
Chuck Norris VS Wyatt Earp: Legends of the Palms Hotel @12th & Island
Since this was posted, I found out that Donald Dodd, aka Bear, apparently passed away not too long ago, as have a couple of the other People of the Palms. A relative of Dodd's contacted me and is sending some photos of his uniquely decorated room at the Palms, where the Christmas decorations stayed up all year long and the stereo always had Santana music wafting down the halls and out his window overlooking 12th -— December 30, 2011 9:44 a.m.

Chuck Norris VS Wyatt Earp: Legends of the Palms Hotel @12th & Island
Thanks to this article, a couple of the featured People of the Palms have contacted me, folks I haven't come across in 30 years! Ain't the internet grand? Looks like we'll be doing at least one more chapter of Legends of the Palms Hotel ---— December 28, 2011 6:24 p.m.
Earlier this year, photos were taken at the Palms for a designation report being written for the National Register, in hopes of securing "historic" status for the building.— December 28, 2011 3:32 a.m.
He's now one of the last surviving links to the the operators of downtown San Diego's long-gone grindhouse theater row.— December 28, 2011 2:13 a.m.
Chuck Norris VS Wyatt Earp: Legends of the Palms Hotel @12th & Island
One of the Palms' former owners contacted me, and we're doing an in-depth interview about their tenure at the old Hotel that will be posted soon as an addendum to this feature --— December 28, 2011 1:29 a.m.
