We Opened the Bar
Mojo has retired from hollerin' a few times before, but he always finds an excuse to come back, whether it's stumping for Kinky Friedman or just celebrating fellow famous neighbors like the late Country Dick Montana - luckily!

Brian Holwerda Gets Weird
Outtakes: USELESS – BUT INTERESTING – TRIVIA FACT? “The Beach Boys Pet Sounds album cover photo is from the San Diego Zoo.” BEST VOICE IN SAN DIEGO? “My favorite is Arabella Harrison, who sings with us live sometimes. Her voice just has that pure quality. In a way, her singing reminds me of Gillian Welch.” FAVORITE DAY OF THE WEEK? “Monday, because it’s my full day off. I get to make a second pot of coffee, catch up on emails, play some guitar, demo new tunes, and just relax. I work in restaurants, so I’m busy when everyone else is chilling, and vice versa.”

Letters from the End of the World, Part One
Every time I think Jeff Smith can't top himself with his historical articles, he proves me wrong - bravo on another riveting writeup! I look forward to the next -

So How Come, 17 Years Later, Overheard in San Diego is Still Black and White??
Ha, a cartoonist friend just forwarded me a message from Robt. Crumb (who I've only met once, a quarter century ago), commenting on my confession about swiping from him for my high school paper cartoon - "And I thought you were the only cartoonist alive who HASN'T ripped off [my] Keep On Truckin." Oh well, only steal from the best, I always say ---

Random Music Box
It's always great when Bobby Bray brings the Reader coverage of our city's more off-the-beaten path musical adventures - the Blurt column SHOULD serve flavors for all tastes, and this event sounds like a treat indeed!
— September 1, 2012 7 p.m.
Tissue Tribute
I have so many CDs and DVDs that Russ turned me onto that not a single day doesn't go by where I don't browse the shelves and think of him. It was great working with him at the Reader, and even greater to call him a friend --- thanks for posting this.

Huge movie poster sale at Landmark La Jolla Village Cinemas in a month or so!
This is either great or terrible news - I already have hundreds of movie posters dating back to the '40s, but only have room in my office to display a dozen at a time, in a selection that rotates appox weekly (the only constants for the past 20 years being the Buddy Holly Story, God Told Me To, and Astro Zombies). The last thing I need is MORE pretty paper =sigh= but who can resist an opportunity like this?! Sher hope I find Grindhouse or Watchmen... BTW, can you narrow down what's meant by "bargain pricing"?

Peter Bolland Picked More Than a Peck of Pot
Outtakes: BEST VOICE IN SAN DIEGO? “One singer that always blows me away is Eve Selis. When I’m onstage and share a mic with her, it’s all I can do to keep singing and not just stand there with my mouth agape like a starstruck fan.” BIGGEST LIE YOU EVER TOLD? “That I didn’t start a fire. When I was about eight, I was playing with lighter fluid, matches, and a dry leaf pile on the side of Mr. Steinberg’s house. In an instant, it was a towering inferno…it all turned out well, no structural damage. Later, under pointed interrogation, I claimed that I was simply walking by minding my own business when I noticed the fire, and I didn’t know who could’ve possibly started it. I lied to my mom’s face for years about that one. I guess she’s going to find out now.” FIRST TIME DRUNK? “In high school, a bunch of us were playing cards and drinking malt liquor and smoking cigars. It was pretty much like that island for bad boys in Pinocchio, with similar results. Learning how to drink well takes years of practice.” DID YOU EVENTUALLY MASTER IT? “I quit about eleven years ago. The best eleven years of my life.” IF YOU COULD CHANGE YOUR NAME? “I’ve never liked the name Peter. I always wanted to be a Tom or a Sam. Simple, clean, nothing fussy.”

Local Album Cover Artist Lands Gig in Movie About Homeless Vets
Mike Clift replied to above via email: "Hey, uh, why don't you let me know who you are? Yeah I may not have done my full term in the Army, but who are you to accuse me of drawing stuff for the Nazis? I was drawing flyers for the Green Party and I WAS A KID, okay? In a stressfull situation, so unless you were stationed with me STFU. As for my family, I never abandoned them. My ex-wife was pressured by her family into divorcing me because she was 'unhappy' and I wasn't making enough money working 50 hours aweek in a metal shop. As for my daughter...well HOW DARE YOU! Life doesn't owe me jack. I did choose to be homeless, however, after personal tradgedy prompted me to seek a new perspective, and it worked. Ask anyone who knows me personally. You certainly sound like you've got an axe to grind absolutely, you sound like an certain psychotic ex-girlfreind of mine. So why don't you email me at
[email protected]
and apologize for trying to sabotage my work?"

Rudies Rock Music High Film (World Premiere Aug. 17, Crest Thtr, Oceanside)
The August 17 Music High movie premier was yanked from the film fest screening at Grace Chapel, formerly the Crest Theater (102 N. Freeman Street, Oceanside), after Oceanside International Film Festival organizers expressed concern over producer Mark Maine's status as a registered sex offender, which he has said stems from a 1995 incident involving a family member. Ironically, the Crest Theater used to be part of the Pussycat Theater adult movie theater chain...

We Opened the Bar
Mojo has retired from hollerin' a few times before, but he always finds an excuse to come back, whether it's stumping for Kinky Friedman or just celebrating fellow famous neighbors like the late Country Dick Montana - luckily!— September 5, 2012 2:21 p.m.
I work in restaurants, so I’m busy when everyone else is chilling, and vice versa.”— September 5, 2012 10:28 a.m.
Letters from the End of the World, Part One
Every time I think Jeff Smith can't top himself with his historical articles, he proves me wrong - bravo on another riveting writeup! I look forward to the next -— September 2, 2012 8:48 p.m.
So How Come, 17 Years Later, Overheard in San Diego is Still Black and White??
Ha, a cartoonist friend just forwarded me a message from Robt. Crumb (who I've only met once, a quarter century ago), commenting on my confession about swiping from him for my high school paper cartoon - "And I thought you were the only cartoonist alive who HASN'T ripped off [my] Keep On Truckin." Oh well, only steal from the best, I always say ---— September 1, 2012 10:36 p.m.
Random Music Box
It's always great when Bobby Bray brings the Reader coverage of our city's more off-the-beaten path musical adventures - the Blurt column SHOULD serve flavors for all tastes, and this event sounds like a treat indeed!— September 1, 2012 7 p.m.
Tissue Tribute
I have so many CDs and DVDs that Russ turned me onto that not a single day doesn't go by where I don't browse the shelves and think of him. It was great working with him at the Reader, and even greater to call him a friend --- thanks for posting this.— September 1, 2012 6:54 p.m.
BTW, can you narrow down what's meant by "bargain pricing"?— September 1, 2012 4:38 a.m.
Simple, clean, nothing fussy.”— August 29, 2012 6:21 p.m.
So why don't you email me at [email protected] and apologize for trying to sabotage my work?"— August 26, 2012 4:48 p.m.
Ironically, the Crest Theater used to be part of the Pussycat Theater adult movie theater chain...— August 25, 2012 9:07 p.m.
