I got a letter from Charles Manson in prison.....
And what about the weird markings around “Son of Man” on the envelope?? I’ve looked at other Manson correspondences online and have yet to see anything akin – I can’t find anyone else who received this personalized cryptographic “message” from Manson in the return addy space --- lucky me.

Record-release roundup
Megan Combs sent this update regarding the rescheduling of her release event: "The new release will be at Tower 13 Beach Bar in Cardiff on Thursday 12-20-2012. It will be an 'end of the world' album release party featuring myself with a full band, Jonny Tarr, Rob Deez, and other special guest artists. No cover charge, but we're asking for an unwrapped animal toy, or unopened dog or cat food or kitty litter that will be donated to a local animal shelter."

Dig a hole: Deborah Raffin
"God Told Me To" being one of my all-time favorite films (and the topic of my first published non-fiction article back in an '80s issue of Midnight Marquee magazine), this is sad news indeed. I'll have to screen that one tonight in tribute, along with her other wonky "masterpiece" The Sentinel and Scanners 2.

Talk to the Invisible Hand: Che Cafe Comes Face to Face with Economic Realities

Local SoCal
Sorry I didn't see your message about seeking the early 1980s Club 33 broadcasts until now. I have a few episodes on old beta videotapes, but I have no way to play or duplicate them. If you're able to dupe to digital, and provide me with copies, we can work out a loan of my betas -

Local SoCal
"I've been called to action to re-brand and rebuild my TV show," Stevens announced today. "The whole So-Cal Showcase thing got too big too fast and it got ugly. So, we are going to go back to the roots of it all and reinvent. We have a small but mighty crew of die-hards that want to keep my original dream rolling: support the music community with free video and advertising. No more wild eyed dreams. No more big talk. No more corporate BS. Just a hardcore bunch of professionals trying to do something selflessly amazing: help people and enjoy doing it. That's what I built SCS on. I can build it again." "The branding will actually be SDMusicTV. Website to be sdmusic.tv...I will be merging all the live SCS vids to that secure channel and all our friends to our new profile by the end of the month. I almost liked the idea of a vacation, but y'all won't let me go down like that." "We will air it starting 2013 on Cox network as well as Time Warner. Let's do it right this time!" Joseph Stevens

Time to jam
The Wednesday Night Jam Session, formerly held at El Camino in Little Italy, will resume December 12 at Seven Grand, running 9pm to midnight. “I will have alternating bands hosting the session every other week,” says Castellanos. “Jazz one week, Latin jazz the other.” The San Diego branch of L.A.-based Seven Grand is located at 3054 University Avenue in North Park (formerly Bacchus House).

Blood money
The increasing expenses and time-consuming, money-freezing regulations as law enforcement got more involved in local used gear dealers was a major factor in the once-prolific local-based Record Heaven chain having to go back to music-only sales. The pawn requirements create classic cash flow failure, with the gear dealer fronting cash they can't recoup for at least 30 days. Record Heaven ended up closing all its shops from SD to LA, as music sales alone couldn't sustain the business. The retailers do all the work in documenting and holding purchases for the required periods, and the only time law enforcement gets involved is when they come around looking for particular stolen property. The cops should be paying the shops for making their jobs easier, with shops even doing the fingerprinting and photocopying IDs, rather than the other way around -- law enforcement provides nothing to a used gear dealer worth $300 a year. Beebe began operating Guitar and Bass Land / Skin City Drums in the old Blue Meanie building around 2008 (later relocating to E. Main Street), but he's been part of the local music scene since the early '80s with the pop metal band Assassin - he was also in Copperhead until 1994 and he played a drug dealing thug in the 1990s television drama Renegade while it was shooting around Mission Beach. In 2004, he formed a metal/blues band called Gun Metal Blues that evolved into the power trio YBS, and he and his wife PK have both played with Steampunk Willie.

Commune to quit
Hadn't heard much about this before, not since Mike Turi first talked it up a few years ago - excellent report, Lara! I saw your earlier concert reviews - hope to see more of your stuff here in Blurt!

I got a letter from Charles Manson in prison.....
And what about the weird markings around “Son of Man” on the envelope?? I’ve looked at other Manson correspondences online and have yet to see anything akin – I can’t find anyone else who received this personalized cryptographic “message” from Manson in the return addy space --- lucky me.— November 30, 2012 6:24 p.m.
No cover charge, but we're asking for an unwrapped animal toy, or unopened dog or cat food or kitty litter that will be donated to a local animal shelter."— November 26, 2012 4:52 p.m.
Dig a hole: Deborah Raffin
"God Told Me To" being one of my all-time favorite films (and the topic of my first published non-fiction article back in an '80s issue of Midnight Marquee magazine), this is sad news indeed. I'll have to screen that one tonight in tribute, along with her other wonky "masterpiece" The Sentinel and Scanners 2.— November 23, 2012 12:40 p.m.
Speaking Idly's Version of Famous Former Neighbors
Love the early Go-Gos/Til Tuesday vibe of this "Famous Former Neighbors" comic strip theme song --— November 21, 2012 1:27 p.m.
Talk to the Invisible Hand: Che Cafe Comes Face to Face with Economic Realities
I always giggle out loud a little whenever the "ALMOST FACTUAL News" gag column fools yet another unobservant (and clearly gullible) reader ---— November 19, 2012 11:27 p.m.
Local SoCal
Sorry I didn't see your message about seeking the early 1980s Club 33 broadcasts until now. I have a few episodes on old beta videotapes, but I have no way to play or duplicate them. If you're able to dupe to digital, and provide me with copies, we can work out a loan of my betas -— November 17, 2012 7:09 a.m.
Let's do it right this time!" Joseph Stevens— November 17, 2012 7:06 a.m.
Time to jam
The Wednesday Night Jam Session, formerly held at El Camino in Little Italy, will resume December 12 at Seven Grand, running 9pm to midnight. “I will have alternating bands hosting the session every other week,” says Castellanos. “Jazz one week, Latin jazz the other.” The San Diego branch of L.A.-based Seven Grand is located at 3054 University Avenue in North Park (formerly Bacchus House).— November 17, 2012 5:05 a.m.
In 2004, he formed a metal/blues band called Gun Metal Blues that evolved into the power trio YBS, and he and his wife PK have both played with Steampunk Willie.— November 16, 2012 3:12 a.m.
Commune to quit
Hadn't heard much about this before, not since Mike Turi first talked it up a few years ago - excellent report, Lara! I saw your earlier concert reviews - hope to see more of your stuff here in Blurt!— November 14, 2012 3:43 p.m.
