Past Cable Channel Lineups
Astounding memory!! I don't suppose you have any recollections of vintage San Diego Public Access cable TV programming? We're working on a Reader article about old Public Access music shows through the years, and we'd love to talk to you if you have memories we can quote ---- article outline so-far is on the Reader Rock Around the Town blog:

The Joy of Sax
Outtakes: MUST-HAVE DVDS? 1. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Live at Montreux 1982 and 1985: “I just like great guitar playing, and Stevie Ray Vaughan is one player I never get tired of.” 2. Jazz – A Film by Ken Burns: “Plenty of great music, and lots of historical facts.” 3. Caddyshack: “I’ve seen it a dozen times, and it still makes me laugh.” 4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail: “Good to play on those days when you think you’re going crazy, and you need to remind yourself just how sane you really are. Comparatively, anyway.” MOST VISITED WEBSITES? 4.
Yelp.com
: “Yelp is where people can read and write reviews on local dining, entertainment, and shopping. Just by entering your city and neighborhood, you can find thousands of opinions about which restaurant to eat at, which club to hit, and – especially – what places to avoid.” 5.
Ohdontforget.com
: “A great website that allows you to jot down a quick reminder, and send it to a cell phone at a certain date and time. No need to register, and no annoying ads.” 6.
traveltalkradio.com
: “Great travel-related information, news, and entertainment.” FAVORITE CELEBRITY ENCOUNTER? “When I was a student at the University of Washington in the ‘80s, George C. Scott was filming on the campus. I searched the library where he was supposed be, but couldn’t find him. So I got on the elevator to leave and, just as the door closed, he squeezed in and was suddenly standing right next to me. I was trying to think of something intelligent to say, when the two other guys on the elevator started babbling ‘George C. Scott, George C. Scott,’ at which point I just decided to keep my mouth shut.”

The exchange portrayed in that Overheard comic just happened to take place on the sidewalk near Patrick's, one of my three favorite downtown clubs. Cathryn Beeks has nothing to do with the comics - her MySpace url was listed because that's where her (tres cool) "Overheard in San Diego" song is posted.

Makes Cents
Taz Taylor had more to say about the European tour that Bonnet claims to have lost money on. "The tour was arranged and booked by a German promoter into some of the most popular rock clubs in Germany, Vienna, Budapest and Prague. While hardcore fans of Graham and our Welcome To America album did turn out and made the shows excellent concert events, their numbers were not enough to cover tour costs, flights, nightliner, hotels, taxes, etc." "Classic hard rock concert-goers in this region are apparently fewer than ever with SCORPIONS, [MICHAEL] SCHENKER, GLENN HUGHES and others also posting low attendance. Even so we and all fans in attendance considered the shows an enormous critical success albeit not a financial one." "The Russian shows were a different promoter, with a guarantee of payment before departing from the U.S. Hundreds of tickets were pre-sold for these shows and a strong turnout for both shows was expected." Of Bonnet's collaborations with Taylor, the Michael Schenker Group, Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen, Bob Kulick, Steve Vai, Chris Impellitteri, and Danny Johnson, all but one lasted only one album or less. That would seem to tell much of the tale...

For the Team
Young Mass recorded “Never a Touchdown” while editing the Sex and the Studio 2 DVD, for which he produced most of the soundtrack. High Tide's acoustic EP Not for Profit was released in 2006. Their debut album Play Me Reggae engineered by Bob Trumpet, includes guest players Daddy Scotty (Chapter 11), Coot Dog (Mystic Roots), Baby Mouse, and NoNeedz. Their song “Ban the Ban” is aimed at repealing San Diego’s ban on liquor at the beach. Also worth mentioning about High Tide is that they were finalists in both the Del Mar Fair Battle of the Bands and the San Diego Vans Warped Tour Battle of the Bands. They finished in the top three on July 4th '08 at Del Mar and emerged victorious in the Vans Battle, which granted them a chance to headline the Ernie Ball Stage at the San Diego stop during the '08 Warped Tour.

From Russia with Love
Outtake - Tambov: “One of our dear new friends is Sameh, who is an immigrant from Palestine and a Muslim, and attends the university in Tambov. After many conversations…Sameh prayed for salvation and happily carried around the Bible we gave him, right up until we left.”
— February 4, 2009 11:55 p.m.
All Mashed In
Outtakes: LENNON OR McCARTNEY? “I’m so grateful for both of them. I think their solo albums Plastic Ono Band [Lennon] and Ram [McCartney] tell you all you need to know. They couldn’t have been more different from one another, but there’s great beauty in both of them. The Beatles obviously needed both guys in order to be as magical as they were. Ram got a lot of stick in the early ‘70s for being insignificant and fluffy, but it sounds like heaven to me. But, you know, arrggh -- Lennon, dammit, of course. Plastic Ono Band just feels plugged into the essence of everything, somehow.” CARE TO MAKE A POLITICAL STATEMENT? “I hope President Obama and his cabinet find ways to live up to the potential of their promise when they're working together, and that their ideological diversity remains a plus, as it should be, and not a minus, as it could be.” FAVORITE TWILIGHT ZONES? 1. Freaked-out William Shatner on the plane [Nightmare at 20,000 Feet].” 2. “Sweaty Telly Savalas battling a doll [Living Doll].” Keneally appears March 7 at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad. "It'll be me on piano," he emails, "plus Freddie Roulette on steel guitar, Henry Kaiser on guitar, David Kemper (ex-Dylan and Garcia) on drums, and Daniel Schwartz on bass."
— February 4, 2009 11:48 p.m.
Hiiii-Ya!
Liebowitz also explained why the band uses the sword onstage to attack stuffed whales and pandas. "Our songs for the most part center on battles between ninjas and animals. There's a loose concept running through all our songs: it's about a Cyclops who is taking over the world, trying to recruit animals - mostly marine life - to form an army. Ninja Love, through ninja skill, as well as the power of our songs (there's a little bit of Tenacious D in the whole thing) is fighting to save the world, by preventing the animals from banding together with the Cyclops. The animals that have already been recruited and turned evil, we kill." "Rabbit Killer" lyrics: "And when you find me / I'll be killing / All these rabbits / One by one"
— January 29, 2009 2:03 a.m.
In Bloom
Outtakes: SOMETHING IMPOSSIBLE TO DO WITHOUT? “Sleep. I've tried to do without it, but I just end up getting dangerous.” FIRST BOOK YOU REMEMBER READING? “One Fish Two Fish, by Dr. Suess.” SOMETHING ABOUT YOU FEW WOULD KNOW OR GUESS? “My pinky toes have stubby toenails.”
— January 29, 2009 1:32 a.m.
Put That in Your Pipe and Smoke It
Wow, I smoked pot for two decades and I never heard of a chillum -- those wacky kids and their crazy drug toys ---

Past Cable Channel Lineups
Astounding memory!! I don't suppose you have any recollections of vintage San Diego Public Access cable TV programming? We're working on a Reader article about old Public Access music shows through the years, and we'd love to talk to you if you have memories we can quote ---- article outline so-far is on the Reader Rock Around the Town blog: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/bands/2008/…— February 28, 2009 8:49 p.m.
4. Yelp.com: “Yelp is where people can read and write reviews on local dining, entertainment, and shopping. Just by entering your city and neighborhood, you can find thousands of opinions about which restaurant to eat at, which club to hit, and – especially – what places to avoid.” 5. Ohdontforget.com: “A great website that allows you to jot down a quick reminder, and send it to a cell phone at a certain date and time. No need to register, and no annoying ads.” 6. traveltalkradio.com: “Great travel-related information, news, and entertainment.” FAVORITE CELEBRITY ENCOUNTER? “When I was a student at the University of Washington in the ‘80s, George C. Scott was filming on the campus. I searched the library where he was supposed be, but couldn’t find him. So I got on the elevator to leave and, just as the door closed, he squeezed in and was suddenly standing right next to me. I was trying to think of something intelligent to say, when the two other guys on the elevator started babbling ‘George C. Scott, George C. Scott,’ at which point I just decided to keep my mouth shut.”— February 18, 2009 7:34 p.m.

The exchange portrayed in that Overheard comic just happened to take place on the sidewalk near Patrick's, one of my three favorite downtown clubs. Cathryn Beeks has nothing to do with the comics - her MySpace url was listed because that's where her (tres cool) "Overheard in San Diego" song is posted.— February 18, 2009 5:52 p.m.
That would seem to tell much of the tale...— February 5, 2009 12:15 a.m.
They finished in the top three on July 4th '08 at Del Mar and emerged victorious in the Vans Battle, which granted them a chance to headline the Ernie Ball Stage at the San Diego stop during the '08 Warped Tour.— February 5, 2009 12:03 a.m.
From Russia with Love
Outtake - Tambov: “One of our dear new friends is Sameh, who is an immigrant from Palestine and a Muslim, and attends the university in Tambov. After many conversations…Sameh prayed for salvation and happily carried around the Bible we gave him, right up until we left.”— February 4, 2009 11:55 p.m.
"It'll be me on piano," he emails, "plus Freddie Roulette on steel guitar, Henry Kaiser on guitar, David Kemper (ex-Dylan and Garcia) on drums, and Daniel Schwartz on bass."— February 4, 2009 11:48 p.m.
The animals that have already been recruited and turned evil, we kill." "Rabbit Killer" lyrics: "And when you find me / I'll be killing / All these rabbits / One by one"— January 29, 2009 2:03 a.m.
“My pinky toes have stubby toenails.”— January 29, 2009 1:32 a.m.
