Qualcomm engineers get axed, then train foreign replacements
I have been in the Tech and Healthcare Tech industry for over 20 years now and its been the same sad tale. At first, it was the threat of hiring young workers fresh out of college that they could burn through and dispose of; that was the first threat to my livelihood. Now, it is all of the out-sourcing to contracting companies like Accenture who can guarantee a foreign work force that they can pay 40 cents an hour to do the same (ahem... similar) job as my co workers and I. I have repeatedly had to have "knowledge transfer" meetings at several San Diego companies and what happens is that the foreign workers, for the most part, cannot deliver the same quality of work. Luckily, the adage of "you get what you pay for" keeps me gainfully employed. If their technical acumen and work ethic were to come up (including learning American English and not her majesty's English) then there would be a serious risk to job loss. The best thing any American worker can do is to prove their worth and continue to do so each day of their working lives. Any slacking off from that goal and you risk becoming just another disposable technical resource. I agree it is unfair to American workers but, welcome to capitalism. It is your responsibility to stay relevant, owner-worker loyalty does not exist anymore.— March 30, 2016 3:53 p.m.
Clairemont speeding irks residents
Sorry to add to an old story but I live on Cowley as well and nothing is being done about the speeding. Its ridiculous because of the elderly at one end of the street and the rest of the street populated by families with young kids and pets. Speeding motorcycles and cars mostly at night and some of them are just a blur as they go by; gotta love those Harleys waking the neightborhood up at 4am. I would love to call the police department to ask for some sort of police presence once in a while or maybe go to a community forum to ask for the addition of a speed bump or two. I like the area but I hate the people who are "just passing through" and 50mph is not out of bounds as far as speculating on speed. I have been behind drivers going at least twice what I was going.— January 6, 2016 2:20 p.m.
