Land sakes, Sweetwater, get it together
We need the most thorough forensic audit imaginable. Going back a couple of decades. No more sad tales of how expensive that is. It is more expensive to allow this entire mess to snowball. Enough!!!— February 4, 2015 10:09 a.m.
Land sakes, Sweetwater, get it together
Back in the land of the runaway train...and who set it all in motion? The same bunch of behind-the scenes 'movers and shakers' who seem to think that south San Diego County is a private estate? Is Mr. Malcolm a part--a large part--of this? How about all of Ed Brand's friends he used to brag so much about? Shouldn't the board be able to call a halt to these proceedings? Why wouldn't they call a halt, as none of it makes any sense at all? Maybe Dr. Glover resigned for more than one reason. Maybe he wants to be able to say that he was not a party to what is continuing to "go down".— February 3, 2015 7:34 p.m.
Puccini partisanship
UCSD did a segment on the SD Opera, and it included interviews with several of those who were involved in the performance...in view of the review cited that said things bogged down in the third act, it was most interesting to hear several performers say that their favorite part is the third act!!! I will try and see if I can get the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LFG18xLsIM&featu… I was able to attend last Tuesday's performance, and thought it was outstanding. Such strong, evenly matched voices with great acting, and a great overall concept of the piece.— February 3, 2015 5:24 p.m.
Don't mess with Texas' labor pool
Long term, Sweetwater needs: a reasonable person who can communicate well with people from all backgrounds; someone who is interested in seeing the district through nightmarishly entangled real estate ventures and funding "issues"; someone willing to dig into the vastness of Sweetwater corruption and expose it for what it is; someone who has a real understanding of the concept of public education and fairness in public education; someone who recognizes that treating teachers, support staff, students and parents AND taxpayers with respect is the only way to go. For someone in this position as a short term caretaker, a reasonable person who plays fair and maintains a positive, honest approach and works to bring out the best in people (while doing some clearing away of those who are obstructionist, dishonest and have their own agenda) might not be such a bad thing. Sometimes people work quietly, and we don't really know what they have done, just that things are running smoothly. But I have no inside knowledge of Mr. Kowba. What about Stan Canaris?— February 2, 2015 8:10 a.m.
Catching up with John
There must be something at risk for people to be this scrappy. The Bayfront project is a big deal, and will mean untold contracts will be awarded. For those 'business as usual' types, that must represent the Holy Grail, so of course 'sympathetic' council members would be high on the request list. Why did the Mayor allow the list of potential candidates to be culled to that great degree? It almost looks like the usual backroom wheeling and dealing, but wasn't the Brown Act supposed to stop that sort of thing? And how like McCann to pull the curtains closed and pretend not to be home (while both cars are there...) so he could avoid being served. Nice. I wonder how he explained that to his kids? If Chula Vista gets sold down the river the way Sweetwater UHSD was sold down the river (for decades), it looks like we will know who, how and why, even if they do hide away. Sometimes the process of elimination works quite well.— February 1, 2015 7:22 p.m.
10News Reporter introduces Brown Pants Factor for animal-related reporting
Oh yes, reminds me of the Graham Chapman "Brown Trouser" monologue...— February 1, 2015 3:12 p.m.
San Diego Opera happy
This production of La Boheme is excellent! If you have the opportunity, head over! All voices were magnificent Tuesday night. There was such a great blend of voices, the acting was excellent, the set exceptionally well done. I'd say it was flawless from my perspective--not to be missed!— January 30, 2015 2:03 p.m.
Don't mess with Texas' labor pool
My hopes and dreams for Sweetwater involve having people in positions that they are qualified for, who really have the courage to do what is supposed to be done, who have leadership qualities that include sound fiscal policies and sound educational decisions. I agree with anniej, that we need people to dig deep into the morass of Sweetwater's deal-making. Dots need to be connected, and responsible parties brought forward and brought to justice. Imagine what Sweetwater would be like today if we hadn't had several decades of "me first leadership" accompanied by bad deal-making and clever agreements for all sorts of people to look away. I really wonder what the impact has been on the students. I hope they can all take what they have learned courtesy of the bad examples of board members. superintendents, other administrators, cafeteria personnel--all those who stole, double-dealed, and lied without compunction. Yes, learn from all those bad examples and do the opposite in their own lives. I just hope all the students will not walk away with the impression that all adults lie, cheat and steal.— January 29, 2015 8:47 p.m.
Okay…we'll take Steve
I am just wondering when the gross mismanagement that was endemic at Sweetwater--and the results of which will take years to straighten up and clear away--could possibly be connected to some of these other players. Who has been driving the Sweetwater Schemes? The city of Chula Vista is on record as opposing some of the real estate schemes, but Sweetwater went ahead anyway. Why was this not news at the time. Who gets to squelch public information of that sort? Why is it that we still do not know the names of all involved?— January 26, 2015 9:39 a.m.
Musical genius dies at age 25
Thanks--I also looked him up on youtube, and listened to a couple of things there. Sad when talent is crushed and/or ignored.— January 24, 2015 4:01 p.m.
