Judge España goes easy on Southwestern College VP
***and more about the Southwestern newspaper. It had been a class, but was somewhat supported by the ads, so that when the issue was cancelled, that affected kids in a class. Then subsequently the newspaper had been published so irregularly that they lost ad revenue, as people were only interested in investing where they could rely on something actually appearing in print. At one point there was a discussion regarding whether the newspaper should just fold--and this had been an award-winning college newspaper. It has been about a year since I have heard anything further. But it is very wrong to say that Alioto believed he was doing right by the school!! He KNEW he was dishonest, and he worked to stifle the knowledge that he and others were dishonest!***— February 1, 2014 1:21 p.m.

Patch news lets go of many reporter-editors
I am hoping that Khari Johnson will find a place where his journalistic skills can be used and appreciated. With any luck, a place not too far from here. It is great when reporters/bloggers/journalists develop their sense of community. The community relies on their voice for continuity in the news. So often news can be reported, but many questions aren't answered. Context is lost. And that is one way that a community loses its sense of history and its sense of self. These are important if the public wants to maintain a voice in their own future.— January 31, 2014 6:14 p.m.

Yes, anniej, this does tend to remind one of strings being pulled. Either that, or Judge Espana has no clue as to the responsibilities of her position. She is supposed to uphold the law, and instead she is assisting in subverting it. We will not give in to the all-surrounding purchased positions that make it so easy for corruption to thrive in this part of the county. So, if all those political figures holding office are locking arms over the corruption business--seeing as it does look like a family business--we will take note of each and every one of those who fail to uphold the law. Surely we can find some people who can hold office and avoid rotting out.— January 31, 2014 4:46 p.m.
Sweetwater Union and Chula Vista Elementary districts to merge?

Sweetwater Union and Chula Vista Elementary districts to merge?
Pardon me if I sound like Debbie Downer, but I am highly skeptical of the sincerity of this effort. The timing is what gives it away for me. It could be just another distraction, another means of keeping the public off the trail of the missing money. Which is why, I will again remark, "Nothing should take place until all the financials are completely in the open, all the real estate deals have been make completely public (including all the 'players' involved from start to finish) and there isn't a single Ed Brand deal, scheme, scam or plot still threatening the district in any way."— January 31, 2014 12:17 p.m.

Classroom shenanigans in Sweetwater school district?
anniej, everyone who continues to speak up and speak out about all this is a hero! People like you who have been calling attention to all the problems in Sweetwater have lead the way. Would Mary Salas be interested in meeting with a group of citizens to discuss all that we know? Or is Ms. Salas more interested in gaining camera time? Because she, and all the other local politicians need to realize that this time we will not be fooled by a superintendent moving back to Texas. Or driving back to North County one last time. We want to know exactly what the financial situation is--no more secrets. No more secret deals, secret golden parachutes, secret real estate acquisitions...secrets that the people of these communities end up paying for, monetarily and through the step-by-step undermining of Sweetwater Union High School District.— January 30, 2014 8:41 a.m.

They are counting on short attention spans as well as short- and long-term memory lapses. Of course there is no consistency in the verbiage...it is all supposed to sound great "in the moment"--not be the sort of thing that is referred to later!!! Which is why local school districts need to really pay attention! Stratas of administrations have no real answerability, because by the time local school constituencies realize what the problems are, those "top" people are long gone, on to their next high paying gig. That is another reason for dedicated local people--not people who merely smile for the camera, are all about themselves and whatever they can scam.— January 29, 2014 2:26 p.m.
