Investigative author Caitlin Rother amplifies her remarks on DeMaio
Brad: don't you always always produce your legitimate, balanced, voter-educating, public-service, unbiased journalism on an anonymous basis and try to keep your name out of everything? We journalists are known for our tiny egos, as you know.— March 27, 2013 9:51 p.m.

The story and what it reveals are the issue here. The U-T's motivations for running an obviously fantastic story, or what it might do if the players were reversed, are less important. Even so, I believe that many of the U-T's top editors and reporters, like Craig Gustafson, retain commitments to ethical journalism and aren't as easily manipulated and controlled by the men who run the place as critics like to think. Not that they're free to report and write what they want. Then again, neither are other journalists like you and me: if we're getting paid, we've got publishers and editors and they call the shots. Anyway, enough. Tell us more about vibrators in the Gaslamp!— March 27, 2013 8:32 p.m.

Cool. When the muckrakers at the U-T, VOSD, CItyBeat and the Reader all say "ewww," something might actually stink.— March 27, 2013 8:07 p.m.

Reality check. Various smear campaign internal emails are here: bit.ly/XfeDQQ and here: http://bit.ly/XfeBsi. Via the U-T. I know why other media in town ignored the smear campaign's allegations and insinuations about DeMaio's partner: They were gay-baiting, ancient and irrelevant. Why did the Reader not report them?— March 27, 2013 7:21 p.m.
David Copley, 60, dead in La Jolla car crash
Where's the evidence that David Copley fired Neil Morgan?— November 25, 2012 9:06 p.m.
Copley foundation's steep fall from grace
Landis was tried and acquitted in connection with the Twilight Zone filming deaths. http://articles.latimes.com/1987-05-29/news/mn-21… In Copley's defense, the U-T avoided layoffs much longer than many other papers in the late 2000s. And while he certainly lived a jet-setter lifestyle, he was clearly a very generous man. When it comes to wealthy newspaper publishers, we could have done a whole lot worse. And perhaps we will.— November 25, 2012 9:04 p.m.

Monaghan, I'm not aware of him ever acknowledging he was gay. And without any confirmation, I'm not sure how any reporter could say he was. Rumor and hearsay are not sources. A reporter could spend time trying to find someone to confirm it, but reporters hopefully have better things to do. -Randy— November 21, 2012 10:02 p.m.
Across the great divide: Conservative U-T San Diego partners with San Diego CityBeat
Oh yeah, those last bits are Randy Dotinga's simple observations. A smart guy, he is.— September 26, 2012 11:01 p.m.

Just to be clear: I'm a freelance contributor to VOSD. I don't speak for them, and they don't speak for me. This is best for everybody. As for solutions: you act like journalism is naturally corrupt unless, perhaps, it's supported by manna from heaven. That's not available at this time. What else do you suggest?— September 26, 2012 11 p.m.

You keep sliming the integrity of the local press as a whole. Contrary to your belief, we are not all whores. I've written a column for the NCT for 14 years. This week's is the last one, as I won't work for Manchester/Lynch. This decision will cost me money. I'm hardly alone on preferring ethical journalism to more dough. Journalists at places like VOSD and CityBeat accept lower salaries (as compared to the U-T or public relations) in order to do work they're passionate about and make a difference. As for "multiple platforms": you seem to want the local press to be immaculately conceived and funded and then devote itself to your pet causes (smearing the GOP, praising Democrats to high heaven). Professional journalists need to get paid. That leads to the potential for corruption from publishers, CEOs, advertisers, donors, foundations and so on. The best thing for the press to do is have multiple sources of income so it can tell any one of them that puts on pressure -- a donor, an advertiser, a foundation -- to go screw itself if necessary. Multiple platforms allow small news organizations to expand their reach AND their funding. You have complaints but no solutions. -Randy— September 26, 2012 5:15 p.m.
