Are San Diego Chargers followers back on bandwagon?
At this point, it seems tough to envision the Chargers playing another full season at StubHub. The Rams staying red-hot will further crush their hopes as well. Add to this the fact that it looks like Rivers-era is nearing its end, and rebuilding is around the corner. This is all bad news for both the franchise, and the NFL. If the other owners push out Spanos, there is a teeny-tiny chance they could play at Qualcomm next year. Both Spanos and Jones getting the boot via the other owners would be epic of course. The business of the NFL is an entertaining soap opera. It's a tad more watchable than back-up QBs facing off against one another every Sunday.

Sportscasting now the "real" alternative radio?
Damn...not even a month? The shock 1090 might have to deal with is that their traditional sports anchor is up in LA now. Local sports talk radio just seems so pointless in this city right now. Agree about 1360's awful signal for sure. Trying to listen to that station while driving downtown was a nightmare.

Sportscasting now the "real" alternative radio?
Since The Padres are the only major team left in town, 1090 might be onto something with bringing Cantore in on their evening slot. The show that 94.9 is considering may be a better fit for 1090 and 1360 as well. Getting listeners to tune into two people talking about The Padres and SDSU is gonna be tough sailing. It might be time for these stations to get a bit more experimental. Maybe try a lil of what Bill Simmons did with Grantland...sports and pop-culture. They have to do something. There just isn't enough to talk about anymore.

Sportscasting now the "real" alternative radio?
Wow...that's pretty dismal. Yet another reminder that SD isn't much of a die-hard sports town. I used to listen to 1360 all the time in the mornings when Dan Patrick's show lead into Jay Mohr's. Both of those were pretty fun and loose listens that had an entertaining collections of talkers. Cowherd's show (DP's old time slot) is just one national guy ranting, which leads into two local guys ranting where Mohr used to be. Funny enough, both of the shows I liked are somewhat similar to that new show that 94/9 might pick-up. As far as music goes, I think the general consensus is 100.7 is by and far the best local rock station at the moment. It's like classic rock for the alterna-kids and 80s new-wavers.

Dedicated to Darius
Scott said that he thought they played with Super Furry Animals at that gig, and Super Furry Animals were on Reverb as well, but that footage isn't on YouTube. It's likely that it was from that same night though. Reverb was a really great live music show. The Joe Strummer footage (available on YouTube) of "Safe European Home" is absolutely epic. One of the coolest Strummer clips online!

Downsize the NFL?
The trend definitely seems to be that the NFL will keep renewing the suspension of blackout enforcement. They do this year by year, so you never know though. They apparently make about two thirds of their money via TV, so it seems kind of crazy at this point to not televise games. It's also of note that when a bar signs up for the NFL package they pay a rate based on their maximum capacity. So, basically, the NFL gets to charge per-potential person watching every game in sports bars coast to coast. That's an even better deal than stadiums offer since seats can go unsold. This fight between cities and the NFL will be interesting to watch though. The league probably thinks that gigantic, flashy stadiums are great as long as somebody else is paying the majority of the tab, while realizing they can downsize and still collect the same revenue without having to pay for them themselves. On a related note, one very telling moment was a couple years back when I was listening to the Dan Patrick Show. The question of the day was about where you preferred to watch a game, at home/at a bar or live at the stadium. Something like 80% who responded said at home or a bar. I thought that was a pretty amazing result, especially since it's such a sports-specific radio show. You expect a result like this on NPR. The masses may be moving away from live NFL in general.

Uber as designated driver choice backfires
This article also brings to mind another aspect that Uber has brought to this equation; the fact that local governments may be losing all sorts of revenue due to declining DUI arrests. I haven't seen any studies, but it seems very likely that Uber has reduced DUI numbers. Almost everyone I know uses Uber when they go out drinking now. It is phenomenal in keeping drunks off the roads, but all that DUI money certainly didn't hurt local townships. I wonder if more random "public drunkenness" arrests will become the norm. Maybe they will include steeper fines and harsher penalties as well. After all, the private prison industry needs to keep those cells filled.

Citizens victors over NFL greed
I bet that contribution assessment is pretty spot on. The city and county could probably actually even reduce that a bit when you consider the money the NFL agreed to contribute to a SD stadium project after the Chargers were rejected from LA. If the team is just talking about building a stadium on land the city is offering (like Mission Valley) they seem pretty close to covering the costs all by themselves at this point.

Meet the Filthy Rich Spanos Clan
It looks like C is pretty dead, but what about D? I haven't really heard anything about its chances of passing. That one has some strange convadeum-related language built into it like the potential stadium spot in the east village requiring no EIR and nixing any bay front expansion of the convention center. If D does pass and C does not, does D basically roll-out the red carpet for a majority-pass vote on the convadeum deal at a later date? If that is the case, and there isn't enough TOT money to pay for it at 15.5%, does the deal die or does the city have to cover the remaining amount?

It's a tad more watchable than back-up QBs facing off against one another every Sunday.— November 18, 2017 10:12 p.m.

Sportscasting now the "real" alternative radio?
Damn...not even a month? The shock 1090 might have to deal with is that their traditional sports anchor is up in LA now. Local sports talk radio just seems so pointless in this city right now. Agree about 1360's awful signal for sure. Trying to listen to that station while driving downtown was a nightmare.— May 27, 2017 12:20 p.m.
There just isn't enough to talk about anymore.— May 26, 2017 3:47 p.m.
It's like classic rock for the alterna-kids and 80s new-wavers.— May 25, 2017 12:25 p.m.
One of the coolest Strummer clips online!— April 16, 2017 3:54 p.m.
The masses may be moving away from live NFL in general.— February 1, 2017 7:47 p.m.
After all, the private prison industry needs to keep those cells filled.— December 6, 2016 1:39 p.m.
Citizens victors over NFL greed
I bet that contribution assessment is pretty spot on. The city and county could probably actually even reduce that a bit when you consider the money the NFL agreed to contribute to a SD stadium project after the Chargers were rejected from LA. If the team is just talking about building a stadium on land the city is offering (like Mission Valley) they seem pretty close to covering the costs all by themselves at this point.— November 11, 2016 9:27 a.m.
If that is the case, and there isn't enough TOT money to pay for it at 15.5%, does the deal die or does the city have to cover the remaining amount?— September 29, 2016 3:13 p.m.
