don bauder "This means there will be three teams close to each other ". I am not sure what the significance of this is. It is roughly 250 miles from LA to Vegas, depending on where you come from. If I were to drive from Santa Barbara, it would be roughly 100 miles further. FYI, Comey was not appointed by Bush. He was appointed by Obama, confirmed by a Democratic led Senate by a vote of 93-1 and took office in September of 2013. IF he serves his complete 10 year term, he would be only the 2nd or 3rd to do so since term limits were imposed after J Edgar. Several years ago, the CRS wrote a report providing an overview of the process for appointing the Director of the FBI. It found that there are no statutory conditions on the President’s authority to remove the FBI Director. The Congress could also remove him thru the impeachment process. Most likely, if Trump wants him out, he’ll ask him to resign his post. If he refuses, Trump will simply have the DNI, to whom the Director reports, and the AG, as the FBI is an agency of the Department of Justice, remove (read fire)him on the grounds that he can no longer effectively lead the bureau and law enforcement community. The Appointments Clause, Article II, Section 2, Clause 2 of the Constitution gives POTUS the power to appoint and Congress the power to approve, or not, those appointments. That power is absolute. ALL appointees serve at the pleasure of the President! There will be no review by SCOTUS.— March 27, 2017 10:10 a.m.

don bauder The last I read, earlier this month, the UC system has a budget of about $25 billion. Of that, about $8.5 billion comes from federal funds, but only just over 1/3 of that, about $3 billion goes towards research funding.. That's only about 12 percent of the total budget. I AM a regular reader of the BLS figures; I spend probably 1/4 hour or so a month looking at it. I would point out though, that you were the one to initiate the response to the unemployment figures posted by someone else. I simply provided some additional information and pointed out that you were mixing your information between reporting periods. Sort of a public service, if you will. I rarely comment here any more because, as you so eloquently put it, I have better things to do with my time. Not saying you are wrong, just saying that when the UC admitted 14.5 percent more freshman students for the fall of 2016 than for the fall 2015 and the number of California resident freshmen admitted to the UC increased by 15.1 percent for the fall of 2016 vs. the fall of 2015 and the number of nonresident students admitted to the UC for fall of 2016 increased by 13.1 percent, I just don’t feel the need to get all worked up over it. The number of undergrad enrollments has actually increased in the last 5 years, from 80,289 for the fall of 2012 up to 105,671 for the fall of 2016. From what I have read in 2012, non residents made up about 10 percent of the enrollment and last year that figure was about 15 percent. You mention the parents who have paid taxes and whose kids can't get in. What of us who pay those same taxes, maybe some of us more than others, and have a kid who didn't choose to attend a UC university? Can we have some of our money back? My points are these. Should there be a cap on non resident/foreign students? I don’t know. And if there is an “official” cap, what should it be? Should it be 15%, or 10%? How about even a 5% cap? Who should be the ones to decide? Bottom line for me is that you have every right to your own opinion and to be offended by what is going on if you choose to be. Personally, as I said, I personally really just don't care either way.— February 20, 2017 3:15 p.m.

I would only point out that your initial comment above from 8:00 am, the one I replied to, referenced the December rate for California, not the January rate the the US as a whole: https://www.bls.gov/lau/stalt.htm FYI. In case you were not aware, the BLS uses a four quarter moving-average basis for their estimates so there is a lag time that might prevent a fully accurate reflection of the labor situation when viewd as a monthly basis. In this case, the data was released on January 24th, for the month of December and the monthly release for the state data for January is not until March 13th, meaning there will be an update to the January reporting. Then at the end of April, the next quarterly report, covering the four quarters ending in March 2017 will be issued. Personally, I prefer to use the data straight from the BLS. All of the info is there and broken out for easy reference. I subscribe to their online calendar so that I can always know what is coming out when.— February 20, 2017 1:51 p.m.

I doubt that is the case. As I said, I have not looked at the month over month figures for California for December, but I can tell you that for the year, the over all U6 rate in California was 11.3% while the U3 rate was 5.4 That would tell me that a U6 rate for December only in the 11% range would be expected. U6 is an alternative measurement, as are rates U1-U5, but I would not consider it one of the "alternative facts" in the the Trump Universe, or anywhere else for that matter.— February 20, 2017 10:35 a.m.
