Trillion troubles
This was a pretty big bust last year. Fifty plus indictments, multi-state raids,San Diego-based foreign nationals from former Soviet bloc countries, over 2000 known victims of identity theft, over $17 million in bogus returns filed with close to half of that being paid out. Oh, and also a nice black eye for the Wells Fargo branch in San Diego, where one of their employees opened the phony bank accounts that were used to receive the refunds and launder the money. Middle-finger bird deemed free
don bauder, At one time, Feeney was with the Giants, for something like 20-25 yrs. More or less, he was the Giants defacto GM. But he started with them back when the Giants were still in NY. Before his short lived tenure with the Padres, He was President of the National League for about 15 yrs. I am most grateful to Feeney for one reason. When the DH rule was first proposed and then adopted, in 1973, Feeney was adamant that the NL would not have the DH. According to a couple bios I have read on Feeney, He resigned the day after he flipped the fans off, so I'm going to guess that the incident did play a role in his rather hasty departure.— September 10, 2014 11:18 a.m.

don bauder, I don't disagree in the slightest. But that just further strenghens my belief the the public is just sometimes too dumb for their own good. First off, If a sports team wants public money for their own use, the should be told to pound sand. But they aren't. And if the public wants to see the books as part of a deal, make the deal contingent upon it. Stick it in their face, it's my way or the highway and if they threaten to walk, then offer to hold the door open on their way out. But too many wheels get greased, too many promises are made and quite frankly, I think too many people are just not smart enough to seek out the their facts, and the truth on their own. Don Bauder, Thirty one of the NFL teams are privately held and, as I'm sure you are aware, don't have to release financial statements. The Green Bay Packers are the only publicly held team, and they do release their financials. Last year their revenue was $308.1 million, a 2% increase over the prior year and their profit was $54.3 million, an increase of 26.4%. Last years profits were somewhat muted, due to a couple of large contract signing bonuses, and are expected to be in excess of $60 million for this year.— September 7, 2014 10:20 a.m.

ImJustABill, It's the NFL league office that is considered a non-proifit. Blame the IRS. The IRS first determined that the NFL League Office qualified as a tax-exempt trade association in 1942 and under IRS codes, it's considered a non-profit. However, all of the money that passes through the league office to its teams is taxable and the teams pay the taxes. Now, whether paying a pitifully low $75million in taxes combined between the teams over the last 2 years is fair, well that's another thing indeed.— September 7, 2014 10:07 a.m.
No county for retirees
Were they in the place formerly known as Leisure World?? Yeah, traffic is pretty much the same now. We used to up there a lot, or at least thru OC on the way to LA. One particular trip will always stick out. It was the summer of 1981. For some reason we were going up to Fullerton, so we left La Jolla at about 4pm on a Sunday. This was before a widening project on I-5 from the OC line north, which started in 1982 or 1983. Traffic was slow leaving town, but typical for a Sunday with everyone headed back from SD and points south. But before we even got to O'side, everything came to a grinding halt. We finally arrived in Fullerton at 8:30 that night. It took 41/2 hrs for a drive we could normally do in just over 1/3 that time. When we moved away from SD, in 1994, we were then heading to south OC from Calabasas. Usually, we came down on Friday evenings. By then, they were in the middle of the "Y" widening project, which was better when it was done, but was a bitch while they were doing it. When I'm over in Arizona and people their complain about the traffic, I just laugh and tell them they don't have a clue, that if they want to see real traffic, try spending some quality time with their car anyplace in So Cal or Seattle. And then come talk to me about traffic in Tucson. LOL— September 6, 2014 9 a.m.

Don Bauder, I would have no idea whom Nixon ogled, or if he ogled at all. If I remember correctly, and I almost always do, Nixon moved back to Manhattan while I was still in college in the late 1970's. I don't remember when they finally sold it, but it has to be something like 25-30 yrs ago. There is a very good Mexican restaurant In Dana Point that Nixon used to frequent. It's called Olamendi's, on PCH right across from Capo Beach. Pretty good food. Lots of Nixon pictures on the wall. We used to take our daughter their with us when she was little. After dinner we would take the bridge across PCH and let her run around and burn off all that excess energy she had from having to sit still during dinner.— September 6, 2014 1:36 a.m.
