UCSD's Gary Jacobson frets about polarization
Re #64: Yeah, I'm familiar with that. The key part of that is "if that speech contributes to a broader pattern of harassment resulting in a "hostile or offensive working environment" for other employees." So it's not an individual act of hate speech that's prosecutable, and even then it's not the individual that gets prosecuted, but the employer. America is a land of egocentric, narcissistic bullies and babies that's FAR too focused on individual rights than things like the common good and "domestic peace and tranquility." There's none of that here. It's "me, me, me" and never "us." There is no "us" in U.S., unfortunately. In other countries, there are things like national unity as a PEOPLE, not just some abstract concept like "Amurrica." That, and people just plain have better manners.— October 16, 2009 12:04 p.m.

Yes, unfortunately, the U.S. has its head up its ass (big surprise) when it comes to hate speech. In the CIVILIZED world (ya know, where they have stuff like free health care?), it's mostly illegal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_speech— October 16, 2009 11:46 a.m.
Bonus Blog: Funny Things Cats Do
Love the images of Mica, SD. My own kitty is more adorable than regal, what with her little tiger face, orange nose and white chin. Big round eyes. Very kittenish. Got the Elizabethan ruff. I just trimmed the pantaloons a few days ago. There was a "nugget problem." :/ This one, I swear, understands every word I say. "Olivia, could you move down, please?" (Meows, gets up and moves to other end of sofa.) "Olivia, you just threw up. Why don't you wait a while before you eat again?" (Looks at me, meows, walks away from food bowl.) After a litterbox visit: "Olivia, how about a nice scratch to clean your feet?" (Meows, walks to scratcher, and tries to dig to China.) My little girl. :)— October 16, 2009 11:01 a.m.
Columbus--The Man, The Myth...The Mercenary!
"Humans will be gone long before most other mammals are." Most other mammals don't shout racial slurs and have guns. But I'm sure we'll all go out together, when humans destroy the world.— October 15, 2009 10:36 p.m.

Pete pecked: "#1-SD? I'm not a believer in the"swine flu". So you're not a believer in specific microorganisms? Only certain ones, like this one? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandemic_H1N1/09_vir… And they found that balloon kid hours ago. He was hiding in the attic at home, afraid he was going to get in trouble for letting the balloon go.— October 15, 2009 10:10 p.m.
Bonus Blog: Funny Things Cats Do
I LOVE "All Creatures Great and Small!" One of my favorite books. Ever. So I'm sure you know, as a fan, that James Herriot, a veterinarian, didn't even start writing until he was 50, at the insistence of his wife. I've always felt that beautiful book is something of a miracle, myself. A runaway bestseller and an instant classic, followed by the film and TV series -- all from a country vet. Can't miss with a blog about animals, Fish. Great last line, BTW. :)— October 15, 2009 9:43 p.m.
Music Notes (Carly Simon, Paul Anka, Michael Jackson)
"Yes, you've mentioned that you type this stuff a mile a minute, but I didn't know about the court reporter training. OK, that explains a lot." That really shouldn't have any effect, russl. It's a totally different keyboard. You can see one right here: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/55/124779193_66879… You'll note that there are no letters on the keys. You can see what they represent in this diagram, though: http://www.depo.com/images/pic_steno2.gif I studied the same thing for two years, and I don't have that problem.— October 15, 2009 12:04 p.m.
Food for Thought
jenjen wrote: "I was in the drugstore buying feminine products, painkillers, chocolate and vodka when the college age cashier dude robotically asked how I was doing, just like he asks every other customer. I looked at him, waved at my purchases and said "how does it LOOK like I'm doing?"" LOL. That's golden, jenjen.— October 14, 2009 10:53 p.m.
Columbus--The Man, The Myth...The Mercenary!
Modern = today. Live - broadcast. Today's broadcast media. "one person's beauty is another person's nightmare" If anyone finds hate speech "beautiful," they've got mental problems that need to be addressed. "I would rather have freedom and liberty and be offended once in a while than to have my freedom and liberty limited to the perception of beauty that is held by who might be in power at that time." 'I' and 'my.' There ya go. Not a big-picture view of what works for the entire culture (including its children and others easily influenced/confused), just what works for one particular individual. The problem here is one of idealism versus pragmatism, which makes it clear that there's really no point in arguing it further.— October 14, 2009 10:49 p.m.

Pete pecked: "However, just like with guns, words are weapons." If you understand this, why do you think it's such a great idea to be popping off all the time, then? "Just because they delete them doesn't mean those thoughts are still in my head." That's fine. They can stay there, too. At least you won't be spreading them around and doing damage with your mouth by giving the impression that that kind of thinking is okay, and by extension that actions based on that kind of thinking are okay. Glad to hear you're not a fan of hate crimes. Not sure why you think beating the crap out of someone is a misdemeanor. It seems you would know, but I'd like to see some documentation on that.— October 14, 2009 10:32 p.m.
