Just Move On Already
"How can you get a parking ticket if you have nothing to park?" It's a koan, right? Lemme know when you figure it out. I'll be up here trying to stop trees in the forest from falling soundlessly. :)— October 27, 2009 3:49 p.m.
Stringers Are NOT Reader Reporters, plus Taylor Swift's Taylor Guitar, Local Blogger Silenced By Killers, Wavves Calls SD "Wretched," SDMA Fishwrap, Zappa, Weiland, Axl, Blackheart, Ms. Beatle, Halford, Mower, more
refried wrote: "Stringers are normally more controlled (for example, for a newspaper a stringer is usually interviewed first - I know I have been)..." See, that's exactly what I would assume.— October 27, 2009 3:40 p.m.

"I'm not afraid to say his name, AG." Yeah, ya know Cuddle, it's not so much that I'm "afraid" to say it. But mentioning him is kind of like invoking a demon. Sure, I may know what to do with it when it gets here, but who the hell wants it? I think he's a good example of the Reader trying to "have it both ways," as you said. Provoke, incite, stir up "controversy," and rack up the website hits from outraged individuals far and wide who wander over to the Reader site for a gander at this insanity. A living incarnation of the old maxim, "Any publicity is good publicity."— October 27, 2009 3:37 p.m.

Re #18: Knew that name was going to find its way into this discussion, eventually. Glad I wasn't the one who said it. :)— October 27, 2009 3:21 p.m.

I think that a lot of people would assume that "News from Stringers" comes from field reporters in remote locations, who do not physically work at the Reader offices. Even if they're freelancers who get paid per story, one might assume they have some kind of agreement and/or guidelines from the Reader, and belong to a known pool of reporters, rather than being complete unknowns who upload stuff that's then called "news." Cuddle queried: "I also wonder if, bsaed on your comments, the Reader isn't trying to have it both ways." I wonder too, Cuddle. And I agree with you, jayallen. It's a problem.— October 27, 2009 3:16 p.m.

"I'd call that abnormal attrition!!" LOL. So would I, Cuddle!— October 27, 2009 2:01 p.m.

Daniels wondered: "to normal attrition." Hmm. Let's be a bit more specific, shall we? NO, let's not. :) They could be anywhere... http://www.slightlywarped.com/crapfactory/curiosi… "Well, doc, you ain't gonna believe this, but..." <snort>— October 27, 2009 1:06 p.m.

Broken Promise
creo: First, I had thought that was a large "O" at the end of your ID, but it's not, is it? Sorry about that. I look forward tremendously to your blog. I don't know if you want to start with your present or past -- both are obviously fascinating. One of our bloggers here who hasn't weighed in yet (refriedgringo, where are you?) is especially good at moving fluidly from one time/locale to another and back again. You might wish to take a look at some of it. Daniels: My complaints about ASU concern the one prof who was in charge of Native American Studies there, coupled with the classic texts I studied in religious theory, which we ourselves were to critique. I didn't read a lot of modern criticism by others. I was only there for a year, and didn't take that many classes, but there was nothing more cutting edge that was offered. WE were to provide that and advance the field. As I understand it, the "academic study of religion" in universities hasn't really been around that long, beginning in the 1960s of 70s at Chicago, and headed by Joseph Campbell's friend Mircea Eliade (who, it may surprise you to know, I critiqued MOST harshly -- much moreso than Marx or Freud). I wasn't overly impressed with my Taoism prof. I 'liked' him, but didn't think he particularly "got it," either. I found the Jewish profs to be much more clued in and up to speed, including the director of the program, who I liked a lot. The Jews were cool. Aaaand, I can dig out that paper and post it for ya, Daniels -- which means the Einstein project and Yeats' demons get shoved to the backburner again. That, and you'll probably be the only one who reads it. :)— October 27, 2009 10:45 a.m.
