P.O.'d P.I.
Shenanigans like this one by Derrick Roach is what gives Chula Vista such a sorry image. And for Roach to be able to twitter successfully his intentions to get three more minutes of fame leaves me shaking my head about journalism today. You can bet Roach will try it again— July 29, 2010 2:06 p.m.
Chula Vista's former police head David Bejarano accused of check fraud by partner
All this concern on the part of the people but nary a murmur from City Hall. Can they really still be hoping this will go away if they continue to ignore it? SBCS is planning their big annual October Bash for their cronies if anyone wants to see the VIP players face to face. Could be interesting.— July 16, 2010 7:54 p.m.
Chula Vista's former police head David Bejarano accused of check fraud by partner
GOOD DISCUSSION but what is going to make the City Attorney, the City Manager and the Mayor and City Council face up to the dirt so far swept under the rug. This has been in the works since May 25 and I have seen not the slightest inclination from any of them to even acknowledge there is a problem, I have many questions? 1) How did this cozy relationship between SBCS and the city start? When? 2) How much money has the city sent their way? 3) Has anyone from the city ever looked at the budget of SBCS, the lofty salaries paid?— July 5, 2010 11:16 a.m.
Chula Vista's former police head David Bejarano accused of check fraud by partner
Too sweet! Too cozy! Too bad! Chula Vista residents were bamboozleded again. I think Southbay Community Services actually had an office in the Police Department before the budget crunch. What in the world was Kathy Lembo doing on a citizen's panel to interview and recommend a new police chief? Can you say conflict of interest? Southbay Community Services tell us what a great job they are doing but with all the public money going into their coffers that should be a given. What about the Salvation Army? do they get a chance to show us what they can do? I need to know just how intertwined the city is with SBCS.— June 30, 2010 10:50 p.m.
Enough to Smear Somebody
Wasn't it John Moot who just got Joe Little from Channel 10 to air his charges against Earl Jentz on election eve? I have also heard Cheryl Cox was out looking for somebody to sign and submit his charges to the FPPC. This pair just keeps on giving - from writing a poorly constructed ordinance to romping through its loopholes. Like Moot said its mostly about the charges.....— June 26, 2010 11:21 a.m.
Crash Tax
That must have been a fast investigation because it is back on the agenda for approval next Tuesday. I am mystified by the headlong rush to sign this contract with Fire Recovery, USA. Does CV have a coupon, or something, that expires soon?— June 19, 2010 12:22 p.m.
East Otay Mesa landfill goes to ballot
I wish every voter could read this clear piece on such an important issue. Luzzaro's writing is always so concise and in depth - the closest I have seen to investigative reporting in Chula Vista for a long time.— June 4, 2010 11:22 p.m.
Castaneda Clean
What in the world does OJ Simpson have to do with frivolous charges being filed against Steve Castaneda? Fact is that someone was successful in getting Angel Castillo to file 83 bogus charges at a council meeting against Castaneda. An outside attorney found none were valid. This little witchhunt cost us thousands of dollars. Now Derrick Roach is getting his 15 minutes of fame by filing charges against Mitch Thompson which will cost us more thousands of dollars. If Mayor Cox were a leader stopping this would be a high priority. NOT LIKELY!— May 27, 2010 7:11 p.m.
He Said, He Said
Sadly Chula Vista deserves being seen as the laughing stock of the county. The UT called us "Settlement City." Our generous severance packages impoverish us. We lurch from charge to charge made by private investigators without convictions. This most recent one seems to want to be judge and jury as well. What a swamp we are becoming.— May 18, 2010 4:39 p.m.
Walkability's Price
I am unconvinced that wasting another $3,000,000 to narrow streets, remove planters, slow traffic and shorten crosswalks will do it. Why am I supposed to go to Third Avenue? To visit the tattoo shop, or to count the vacancies in the Gateway Class A Office Building? I recall Rod Davis, the Chamber of Commerce CEO, ten years ago telling us it would be the catalyst to revive Third Avenue with throngs of pedestrians. It never happened and he is long gone. Or maybe to watch the students come and go from classes in yet another failed redevelopment project that was going to save Third Avenue? . I think it was Einstein who noted that doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result is a sign of insanity. I don’t want to believe that so many well-paid people don’t get it. Though the physical environment is important it is the type of stores that will ultimately change Third Avenue. Someone must be capable of looking beyond the next million dollar grants for yet another doomed to fail physical environment fix.— March 28, 2010 3:32 p.m.
