Regarding mountain lions, they are cautious opportunists. The do come from above, but they don't have to. They do attack from behind, and when they do they have been hunting you and intend to eat you, maybe now, maybe later. They will cover you or your carcass with sticks. There's a guy at Northern Arizona University, as I recall, whose specialty is mountain lions. My only encounter was as a child. I ran one way; the lion ran the other. Lucky for me. If the lion wanted you, he would have had you. Maybe, just maybe, he didn't want to tackle both of you at once, so sticking close may be a good idea. Just don't look like one animal. Unless you're hunting them with only spears or bows and arrows. Ideally, you need three. I'm having real trouble getting the geography straight in my mind. How about a map? On the desert side, the canyon just south of Canebrake Canyon, known as "Indian Canyon" would qualify as a "box" canyon, because the terrain is so steep and rocky that no horse could traverse it. The boulders would, however, make excellent cover for an ambush. Of course this is true of many canyons.— September 4, 2013 8:25 p.m.
Aguirre: "Put essentials first and wants second."
This is an improvement, but Aguirre needs to polish his communication skills, and do it quickly. He may have a tough time stomaching it, but he has to do and say things that will draw media attention--and LOTS OF IT! ". . . water, infrastructure, electricity improvements" are not enough--the rabble want bread and circuses. And, he's going to need a lot of volunteers to get out the vote. He needs to look at demographics closely, and get some GENERAL poll questions out there to show that he is in favor of what everybody is in favor of--keeping government out of our lives, our bedrooms, our pocketbooks. In short, he (or, preferably, his friends) needs to hit the streets. He needs some students and some old people. I've got a broadcast-quality (but non-HD, but large CCD) video camera if someone wants to use it. Actually, high-quality audio audio is more important than picture-quality, and this takes the right kind of microphones and knowing how to use them--I have that stuff too. If the "footage" is exciting enough, the media will use it. "If it bleeds, it leads," is the news-desk dictum. He needs to get out in the field to show what he will do. Slogan: OPEN UP CITY HALL--VOTE AGUIRRE! YOU'RE TOP PRIORITY--NOT THE DOWNTOWN FAT CATS! A Mayor that HEARS YOU--AGUIRRE! Your readers can no doubt do better than this, but they need to get moving now! Of course he needs a website--a very well engineered and designed one. He can post his own footage on there, and he can play the underdog label for all it's worth. This is just a start. But there's no time for perfection, just avoiding mistakes. Fletcher and the other Republican-what's-his-name are there at the pleasure of their handlers. Aguirre don't NEED no stinkin' handlers. Question is, do we want a MAN, or one of two titmice? Don, it might be a good idea to do short pieces on specific issues to spread out the comments more--and thus extend your reach with less effort. I suspect that some of the good comments you receive are never read because it's such a daunting task, especially when so much space is filled with personal invective. Don't let anyone bait you, and try to get we'uns to stick to the subject and respond directly to points made in the piece or by other subscribers rather than cherry-picking and exaggerating and indulging themselves for ego's sake. For example, 'Aguirre's no lap-dog (like some other pols and bureaucrats), but he's not a chewer of shoes either.' But I'm sure y'all can do better than that!— September 3, 2013 10:59 a.m.

But let's keep our eyes on the ball. Aguirre is doing an image-change, and we've gotta help him. I think Cook would be a good candidate, but he's not been fast enough on his feet, and time is VERY short. His recent TV appearance wasn't bad, but it's going to have to be a lot more well thought-out to counter the money/media interests--he needs to do a lot of homework and develop his talking points more wisely and practice, practice, PRACTICE them. And, I think he needs good speakers to speak for him so he doesn't need to brag. We could all help by contributing those talking points right here (If he's as smart as I think he is, he either reads this or has someone digest it for him).— September 3, 2013 10:39 a.m.
