The Turks are coming...to a charter school near you - REMOVED PER JH
2 of 2 This school highly encourages parent involvement. Communication has been stellar, I'm impressed beyond words! If they were so sneaky, they'd not involve the parents as much as they do. I've been on campus many times, sometimes unannounced. What I see are happy kids, happy teachers who are engaged with the kids, lots of project based, open ended learning. It's a great environment and my son is enjoying school, for the first time in his life. The accusation that the school is primarily staffed by male Turk teachers here on specialized visas is also a ridiculous accusation. None of my son's teachers are male Turks. NONE! The staff and teachers are a mix of many nationalities, Did the "journalist" research this "story" at all? Disgusting, hateful, racist, untrue! Well done, San Diego Reader, you've done it again!— November 15, 2013 9:28 a.m.
The Turks are coming...to a charter school near you - REMOVED PER JH
1 of 2 I am certainly not a frequent reader of the San Diego Reader, and this is yet another example of why. Another poorly written, poorly researched “story”. A friend notified me yesterday suggesting I take a peek, so I‘m here.. This is trash! Journalism at it’s worst. Did the author even bother to do any research? He didn’t even get the name of the school correct? Rubbish! Embarrassing! Sharon Higgins is anti school reform. I'm also going to out on a limb and assume that she has never stepped foot on the campus of the mentioned (incorrectly named) San Carlos Charter. With the education system in the mess that it has become, with students dropping out, or almost worse, graduation illiterate, parents are standing up and advocating for their children's educations. Public schools are quite often failing our children. Reform has become necessary. Charters are offering children better educations in many many cases. But parents need to stay involved in their children's educations regardless of where their kids attend school. I am a Magnolia Science Academy parent. When my son was approaching middle school age, I researched every choice I could. I'm so happy we have choices these days! We are NOT a disadvantaged family. We are upper middle class, hands on, involved, concerned, intelligent parents. MSA offered more than the middle school my son would have been fed into. Other posters have already listed the tutoring, enrichment and extracurricular activities the school offers, and I can attest. But the middle school he would have attended didn't offer any of it! Test scores are comparable. Class sizes are not! MSA has roughly 360 students, the other middle school has nearly 3 times that many. The staff and teachers ar MSA know my son, they know his name, they know HIM. I would find that difficult at a school of 1000. There is money in numbers. Schools want to cram in as may children as they can because that is how they are funded. Yer this small school of under 400 children offers so much more than the school with 1000. More technology, more enrichment, more extra curricular activities, all of which are FREE, yet the school accused of skimming money to fund a religious group in Turkey? This is ridiculous! Tax payer money is being used to fund a Turk religious group? Not at this school! No way!— November 15, 2013 9:27 a.m.
