Cardiff's Torrey Pine comes down amid suspicions
- The International Panel on Climate Change warns that barring some definitive action we will reach the tipping point for irreversible warming within the next few decades. Signs of impending disaster are already present - massive loss of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, huge fires burning in the Amazon, Siberia, Canada, and Alaska, melting permafrost. Studies also show that trees are the most powerful weapon we have to combat climate charge, yet you naively think that planting a few saplings will take the place of dozens of mature trees, each of which sequesters hundreds of pounds of carbon dioxide every year. If the District was planting the same kind of trees they just cut down, those who are still alive could look forward to approaching the same effectiveness in about 60-70 years, well after warming is already beyond the tipping point. But they aren’t the same kind of trees, the majority are dwarf trees and small fruit trees that may grow to 15 feet, not 60 feet, so little shade and far less carbon sequestration. A new school to educate our kids might be a nice thing, but when it’s at the expense of their futures, it’s time to rethink your priorities. The school could have been designed to keep some of those mature trees - they didn’t even try.— September 3, 2019 12:02 p.m.

Further chipping away at Mr. Peterson’s credibility, he says that construction crews haven’t even started trenching yet. The attached photo of a 6-8 foot deep trench immediately adjacent another tree that the School District claims is supposed to be saved was taken on July 14th. Maybe his definition of “trench” is different? http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2019/s…— September 3, 2019 11:51 a.m.
Cardiff's Torrey Pine comes down amid suspicions
Randy Peterson’s statement is completely false. The approved plans for the school show a building right next to the Torrey pine that was cut down, and the tree was marked “Tree to Remain - protect in place”. The plans were updated as recently as April 2019, still showing the tree to remain. They knew where the buildings were planned - this was nothing new, and has zero to do with the lawsuit. In fact, the plans and building placement have not changed for more than a year. Instead, the District and its construction crew intentionally damaged the tree so they could take it down in spite of the approved plans for it to remain. Don’t blame poor planning and the thoughtless and unnecessary destruction of priceless trees on the people who oppose the plans. The District wanted a clean slate for its “legacy” project, so it made plans to cut down more than 2/3rds of the mature trees. They’ve mortgaged children’s futures for some new buildings. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2019/s…— September 3, 2019 10:52 a.m.
