Smiling, Unaware
Pike angst-èd: "I picked this one because the kneejerk little deconstructivist in me gets all gnarly minded over the phrase "presence of the past." Something I'm not really excited to get into right at this point due to being a)out of practice and b)unsure if mid-blog is the proper place for anything-but-practical lit-crit to take place." It's always a good time to flex your deconstructionist musculature, Pikenstein. There has got to be a factory somewhere, churning out textbook titles for anthro, sosh, lit, humanities, history, etc. Alternatively, this one could have been: "Cultural Conversations Past and Presence," "Conversations of the Past: Our Cultural Presence" and "Our Cultural Presence: Our Past" and "Conversations Past of the Cultural" and "Our Cultural Past and Presence," "The Cultural Past of our Presence in Conversation." Etc. The most Derridean of these might be: Conversations of Presence in our Cultural Past." ;)— December 8, 2009 3:28 p.m.

I would never throw them in the trash--not any book! Though I had a friend who did this with the book she won as a prize for her thesis. It was some highly didactic and narrowminded lameass work on women's "domestic" literary production of like, a period of five years in the 18th siecle. She was angry because she felt it was crass of them to hand out a book written by the prof who taught the honors class (badly). Thankfully, the year I won, they were not handing out this book; instead I received a $500 prize--hey, that's a whole slew of books on domestic literature!— December 8, 2009 3:19 p.m.

Ah, someone has finally discerned my blogging meta raison d'etre. Good show, Doctor Pikey-Pikington! Hmmm. "Diggity Daniels..."— December 8, 2009 2:10 p.m.
Letters
Re: letter from E. Dunne, who claims that the article “Annual Dysfunctional Family Thanksgiving Dinner” (Cover Story, November 25) "…was typical of most Thanksgiving dinners: way too much to digest and most of it not very good." She goes on to object to the writers's use of a few big words, while yet hastening to show us she too can use a few: "It’s not hard, guys. Thanksgiving is a self-defining event. No need for smug, wordsmithed tales of angst and dysfunction." Thanksgiving is a self-defining event, Dunne? So...the contributers should have stuck to exclaiming over the size of the bird, and saying grace? The usual clichéd list of ‘stuff for which I give thanks?’ Yawn. That’s tired-er than a tryptophan-laced turkey belch. Me? I prefer the more varied buffet offered by these writers, who in some moments managed to treat this drowsy topic in some fresh and even surprising ways. I’d be proud to take a seat at any of their tables, but something tells me no one’s crying over your ungrateful toss of an imagined invite.— December 8, 2009 9:21 a.m.

Woops, it's the mother-in-law, Tiger's wife's mother. I suck at reporting, so will stick to commenting. #31: Excellent summation, Duhbya--single-zipperedly! ;)— December 8, 2009 8:02 a.m.

Ponzi opined: "He apparently has a low self esteem that must be fed with multiple sex partners and I would guess unprotected sex as well." Why would you guess unprotected sex, Ponzi? "Their behavior demonstrates they were whores to begin with." Can you elaborate on this? I am not yet aware of any interviews with women claiming to have slept with Tiger, though admittedly, I have not searched for them. If there are no interviews, and no stories yet, on what do you base this conclusion?— December 8, 2009 7:57 a.m.

UPDATE: 10:30 AM ET: The patient has been released from the hospital, according to WOFL TV in Orlando. Read more: http://www.tmz.com/#ixzz0Z74C0PDc The plot thickens, as earlier reports had the patient "on advanced life support." In other news: I have stooped to looking at TMZ for information.— December 8, 2009 7:54 a.m.
