Lynch Fever
you really should be doing more dramaturgy -- your insights lend so many layers of understanding to the reviews -- great opening -- I was hooked - on the review, that is. I hope the production does well, as it sounds exciting and, yes - disturbing -- and with a great cast, it should have some 'legs'.— May 16, 2012 4:27 p.m.
Arts Left Behind?
worth sharing across the nation -- thanks Kevin Six and Jeff Smith for posting this— May 15, 2012 9:08 a.m.
The deplorable state of theatre, and the coverage of same, in San Diego
I think you've covered and said just about everything that 'people are thinking' -- and it seems to be the same story across the country, so San Diego actors: don't feel alone - do the work you do, enjoy the life you live. The Kevin Six's of the world and YOUR audiences applaud you and your efforts. Without the small, struggling theatres, we'd have no way to measure the commercial against -- like light and dark -- both exist, and always will exist -- many of the large theatres grew out of such small spaces and collaborators -- after so many decades, their roots are forgotten, never to be recalled -- it's important that some one do it for them.— April 16, 2012 9:02 p.m.
What's Playing this Weekend — 100 Years Ago
it would be so wonderful to time travel and stop in at these productions -- thanks for writing this! gives great perspective (without the history class final exam) on theatre's journey -- LOVE this— April 16, 2012 8:56 p.m.
A Great Escape, Part Four
my father fought in WWII, Korea and, eventually Vietnam -- and he had stories, but he never shared them with us as kids, and only once did he give one to me as an adult. Terrible events he saw and experienced. Just the bare minimum of detail, but we could fill in all the surroundings, and all the faces for ourselves. I think it's because of story-telling like this -- details without grinding out the horror -- helps the rest of us understand a little of what soldiers endure, what thoughts they must keep to themselves and which they should tell. This is one of those stories that helps not only us civilians try to grasp those events, but also to help other soldiers who are as gifted at telling their stories. This has been a difficult series, not because it's not a good story, but because of the subject matter. Difficult is not necessarily a bad thing -- and in this case, it's a great thing. Thanks for delving into this exciting and terrible story for us.— April 1, 2012 10:02 p.m.
Almost, Maine at Scripps Ranch Theatre
hmmmm..... thanks for a thoughtful article. I've been missing Robert May's work -- but to the script: do you think that the naivete of the characters is prevalent in many of the plays we see, even in the big regional theatres? Seems to me the more I see new plays, even when the characters are very adult and using curse words and violence - they all seem naive. Or the ideas come across that way - perhaps I've seen too much theatre -- ha! But thanks for, as usual, a thought-filled article about the theatre!— April 1, 2012 9:55 p.m.
Hidden History: The Ballad of Juan José

This Week in Sports, 100 Years Ago - Baseball
