NFL supposedly upset with Chargers' move
Just my take on the trust. The NFL franchises have been fantastic investments for many owners. The Buffalo Bills were purchased for $25,000 in 1959. They are worth about a billion dollars now. Spanos bought the Chargers and has realized an outstanding gain in value since the NFL has become a marketing phenomenon. The NFL popularity has created billionaires out of humble millionaires. Spanos is barely hanging on now because the pressures of being an NFL owner are not to just field a team, but to build palaces mostly subsidized by taxpayers. The league thinks everyone is a fan, but that is not true. Building an NFL stadium for billionaires is the most undemocratic action a municipality can do because there is certainly not a majority of fans in the taxpayer pool. It is a popularity contest that pits die hard fans against the majority that want fiscal responsibility; police, fire, schools, parks, infrastructure and arts. The Spanos clan may not have to sell the team for taxes, but they join an elite few that have had to sell a sports franchise because they are almost universally hated. Taxes are the least of their problems now; the damage of their reputation, loss of trust, negative public perception and blatant lack of integrity is damaging any remaining goodwill Spanos has.— January 22, 2017 7:57 p.m.

An irrevocable family trust. That is how the Spanos clan can keep the team in the family and eliminate most taxes, by passing it to his children through a trust. You have brought up an interesting question. I know that Alex unfortunately has Alzheimer's. So he no longer has capacity to enter into contracts. Some party has power of attorney and/or guardian of the estate and that party would have to set up the trust. There's also the wildcard, Trump. His gang wants to lower capital gains and gut estate and inheritance taxes.— January 22, 2017 6:06 p.m.

Sounds a lot like Donald Trump. What would he have been without Daddy?— January 21, 2017 4:18 p.m.
County labor report
We have five layers of working classes. Those with government jobs. Those with union jobs. Those with jobs working directly for the corporation. Those working as contractors to any of the higher tiers. And the rest who work part-time, under the table, gigs... they may be citizens or migrants (legal or illegal) competing for the same low pay and tips. Ten years ago whoever would have though they would be a taxi driver? Now tens of thousands of Americans, some of whose lineages date back to the Revolution, are competing for driving gigs with refugees from the Middle East and Africa. Driving the wealthier working classes around and delivering their goods and meals. Have the methods for reporting employment been updated with the new realities of the labor market? We still do not 'create' enough jobs to keep up with population growth, both from domestic birth rates and all the various visa and other immigration schemes.— January 21, 2017 10:56 a.m.

I suspected this drama would not be over.— January 21, 2017 10:16 a.m.
Today the saddest day ever for Chargers fans
Spanos said he and his wife, and is sons, will be moving to L.A. I wonder if Dean is going to sell his stake in Donovan's?— January 14, 2017 7:11 p.m.
Today the saddest day ever for Chargers fans
Already the 49'ers and the City of Santa Clara are suing each other. If the NFL can't impoverish a municipality with a stadium, the NFL will drain and distract them with litigation.— January 12, 2017 4:47 p.m.
Today the saddest day ever for Chargers fans
I won't believe they are moving until it's reality. They can't be believed any other time, why now? This is just an escalation of the drama. The only thing they have done so far is take the Dodgers logo and italicized it and 5 minutes worth of code changes to their social media. I think even if they 'move' to L.A. to play games, they will still be heavily engaged in local politics and more drama generated by them to get the rabid fans out in force. They are only a tenant in L.A. They can always move back if they are able to ram some stadium deal through.— January 12, 2017 1:30 p.m.
Chargers get an extra 48 hours
"... relocate the Chargers to Los Angeles, beginning with the 2017 NFL season..." And some simple changes to social media accounts and a 5 dollar logo. This means we can enjoy the more brinkmanship this spring and summer. It's not real until the Chargers office is emptied and the last moving van has left. It's probably not going to be over when they play in LA. The NFL will leave all kinds of holes in the contracts that will allow Spanos to keep Charger fans hopes up all the way from Inglewood.— January 12, 2017 9:21 a.m.
Chargers get an extra 48 hours
The NFL didn't check those little calendar facts when they set the deadline last year? Roger Goodell should have his pay docked for that oversight. But wait, Presidents Day is coming up. The NFL will decide to give Spanos more delays to accommodate other holidays... Chinese New Year, Groundhog Day...— January 11, 2017 6:34 p.m.
