I believe they are being tried together because in the past they have appeared together and they are both on calendar to appear tomorrow; same court, time and case number. Lovejoy’s lawyer in the initial proceedings was Brad Patton, a respected criminal attorney. So she has good representation if she can continue to retain him. I don’t know who is representing McDavid.
Good story Ms. Knott.

Mission Beach's last big chunk
It would be nice if it could be a park. But that area has more open space than other areas of San Diego. The beaches, Mission Bay park, Fiesta Island, a big park in Ocean Beach. So if they built a nice park, what would be the draw? With beaches and watersports all around, the “park” would probably be invaded by homeless and derelicts. The city would have to spend more money on improvements, maintenance and security. Any parking lot would fill with motorhomes and such, so the only way parking would work is to have meters. The city can’t manage the gang-bangers and riff-raff at Mission Beach (around Belmont Park), where there is already a lot of grassy parkland. As Just Wondering said, “things change.” We old timers might not like the changes, but progress is often more beneficial than we reactionaries may believe. A park is a simple idea and sounds good, but I am comfortable believing that it would not really be a great amenity for the locals or visitors. And if they wind up being AirBNB’s, that’s life. HOA’s, if their owners really wanted to preserve their communities, could change their CC&R’s to forbid certain short-term rentals. But then of course that would become a property rights issue and the investors would probably prevail. AirBNB is just a symptom of the class divide; property owners versus those who have no property trying to control or discourage the investor class from expanding or profiting from their real estate activities. Just like rent control.— October 17, 2017 7:30 p.m.
Too scared to cook in Baja?
I have enjoyed many visits to Valle Guadalupe in past several years. It has really been becoming an exciting destination for food and wine. But I have not gone in two years because of the step up in crime. If that region, including Ensenada, want to attract more tourism they need two things; an airport modern enough to permit commercial flights to land (so people do not have to drive through Tijuana or drive at all) and they need to have visible security, like the Mexican Marines. Mexico City is another place I have visited several times and felt safe because of the large federal police and military presence. But now I fear that Mexico City is losing that "safe feeling" because the crime is increasing in the district. So, that said. I am not traveling to Mexico until they can get a handle on the drug cartels that are terrorizing their people and visitors. I know statistically it's rare for a tourist to be killed or kidnapped, but at some point people look at the numbers and say... No Thanks.— October 17, 2017 7:03 p.m.
Devil in details of Carlsbad divorce case
It's not on the North County court calendar yet, but jail records indicate both defendants are scheduled to appear tomorrow (Oct. 18) at 8:30 a.m.— October 17, 2017 1:48 p.m.

Well, if Lovejoy, a prolific triathlete, now eating horrible jail food and probably working out doing push-ups and sit-ups in her cell, wanted to post bail, she probably could. But she would lose what estate she collected from her divorce and probably not have enough money to pay for a defense. At this point, her entire settlement from the divorce has probably been exhausted by legal fees. Let’s see who shows up in court tomorrow to see who is defending her.— October 16, 2017 10:16 p.m.
Lemon Grove councilman sued for free-speech stifling
Thank you for your reply. I am glad you elaborated and think you have a point about the egos and pettiness. But sometimes the hubris of a person can drive another to respond in surprising ways. The test will be what the judge thinks in the first few motions.— October 16, 2017 6:39 p.m.

Lemon Grove councilman sued for free-speech stifling
LOL. When you pass the bar, get back to me. This is serious stuff and if you dismiss it as you seem to be doing I am assuming you don't believe in due process unless it is a process you agree with.— October 15, 2017 7:34 p.m.
Vista councilman regrets leash-free vote
I did complain to a local Albertson’s manager. But he told me that they had to be careful because of disclosure rules. This is the same store that I complained about long lines and their unfulfilled “3’s a Crowd” promise to open more check-lanes when the longs grew long. The Vons and Albertson’s merger has created a mess, the union employees are killing the customer service. There is none yet you pay premium prices. And I noticed the banners that used to hang above the check-stands that declared “3’s A Crowd” are gone now. So it’s now F you, we will only open 2 cashiers and let you, the overpaying customer eat cake. These jerks at union controlled grocers need to learn they are becoming obsolete. I only go there when I absolutely can’t find something somewhere else. And that is becoming less and less of a problem with Amazon Now. They need to take a lesson from Trader Joe’s where checkout is a priority, not a menace. The managers do not want to confront the people that bring dogs in. There are stores that post signs that state that the dog must have inoculation papers and other documents to prove out they are indeed a “service dog” not your average mutt. Service dogs cost thousands of dollars to train and deploy. These idiot, self-entitled (and usually millennial age group) folks that can’t leave Fido at home are a menace to society.— October 10, 2017 7:23 p.m.
U-T print circulation continues downward spiral
Don, do you know if schools still get the newspaper? I know that if a subscriber went on vacation they could donate their paper to a local school. Do schools, or ore importantly, their teachers, even bother with print news? Seems these days they would be exploring news stories on a tablet.— October 10, 2017 7:13 p.m.
