Lovejoy and McDavid guilty of attempted murder
Then the aunt is a rational, emotionally mature adult and the other supporting kinfolk are in denial.— November 16, 2017 9:30 p.m.
Are San Diego Chargers followers back on bandwagon?
One fact that never seems to come up in the subject of the value of an NFL franchise is that most of their value is “goodwill.” Goodwill is often stated on financial statements and it is a measure of the enterprises brand name, longevity and established fan or customer base. The Chargers management has underestimated the amount of damage they did to their franchise by first, not putting a winning team on the field and secondly by jerking around a large municipal government that is broke. Rather than understanding that their only hope was to work something out in San Diego which, in this era of tight municipal budgets, meant putting some skin in the game, Spanos, as the stubborn knucklehead that he is, drew a line and the sand and withdrew himself from prudent compromise and hid in the corner. He thought that threatening to move would create a civic panic and the result would be a populace on their knees to do anything to keep his perennial-losing-team in San Diego. If Spanos had invested enough in the team to win just one championship, the sentiment might have been more favorable. But now the kid that always called his boss “Dad” is now faced with the reality that he sucks as a negotiator, promoter and businessman. If not for his father’s wealth, Dean might be serving you cocktails or detailing your car. He is felony stupid when it comes to running a business, even one that throws off so much cash flow as an NFL franchise. The Chargers are going to die in Carson. That is their graveyard. Because no amount of shared media, cable, network, streaming revenues can fix stupid.— November 16, 2017 7:45 p.m.
Lovejoy and McDavid guilty of attempted murder
Swell, she is a blond! (Or was before a year in jail washed out the peroxide revealing a dirty blond). The media always seems to go out of their way to cover an attractive, young, white woman. If she were a Mexican or Black, she would never hit the wire. But a "Kristin Rossum" (the American Beauty murder) and others who are featured on Nancy Grace, Dr. Phil and all that drivel in the video media landfill, make headlines because they are young and blond.— November 15, 2017 10:08 p.m.
Qualcomm surely worth more than $70 a share
Oh man, I agree with you Visduh! The Jacob’s wealth is established and immense. The sale of Qualcomm will only make them wealthier and seeking other avenues to explore with their new found leisure. The clan will get more involved in local politics and land development affairs. Sure they give money to the symphony, arts, universities and other causes, but that does not make them saints. They also mitigate their good deeds with sticking their noses and using their power to push agendas which are not in the public’s best interest. They ache to leave a social legacy but their projects are extremely unpopular. In my opinion, they left an opportunity to “make America great again” by being one of the most exploitative and ambitious supporters of foreign labor on American soil. In their greed, they took as many H-1B visa candidates as they could, rather than pay the wages of American engineers. Qualcomm is the prey and I predict the predator will prevail. I have no feelings either way. But I don’t expect this to be a boon for San Diego, it will most likely be a satellite campus until all the operations are moved and resettled. Then the only large private employer in the “Fortune 500” rank will be Sempra Energy (and their little Tasmanian Devil; SDG&E). So sad that San Diego will be left with just one big elephant and such a nasty, greedy, lying, pathetic one at that.— November 14, 2017 7:20 p.m.
Lovejoy and McDavid guilty of attempted murder
Eva, thank you for the story and the follow-up on their conviction. I had no doubt they would both be convicted. This conspiracy was a foolish plan and doomed to have no rational defense. Patton is a talented and respected attorney, one of the best practicing in the North County Courthouse. But the money is gone and the appeals will drag out. I doubt there could be any claim of jury misconduct; they deliberated for only a few hours. Cases where the jury is unanimous so quickly are pretty much open and shut - there’s little wiggle room for a charge of misconduct and there also seems to be no technicalities to question. Lovejoy was an attractive, athletic (triathlete) with good education and career. A great life was ahead of her. But her anger at having to share custody and pay her husband a divorce settlement led her mind to travel to dark places. Even with high achievers, high functioning individuals, there may lurk a sociopath. They sometimes feel they are too smart to get caught. What a sloppy attempt at a contract murder, even without a lot of the evidence, I really believe they could have been convicted on far less, even circumstantial evidence. Who else would have the motive and means to do what those two did?— November 14, 2017 6:55 p.m.
Historic value of O.B. kit home debated
If they had only bought the house at Costco, they could return it today for a refund.— November 11, 2017 7:23 p.m.
Dad embezzled $275,000 from Disney ship
Disney ends blackout of LA Times after boycott from media outlets. Yeah that didn't last long, Dopey Disney.— November 7, 2017 5:14 p.m.
Dead dad's Social Security benefits bilked
Sixteen years, the funds were direct deposited into his fathers bank account. I'll bet this is pretty common too. The bank would seem to have some negligence. There is a federal database called the "United States Social Security Administration's Death Master File" which financial institutions could query periodically. But that might not be good business because even dead peoples money is profitable.— November 7, 2017 5:10 p.m.
Curse of the Georgia Street Bridge
When reading stories about construction delays on relatively small projects, I am reminded that the Golden Gate Bridge was completed in four years and under budget.— November 7, 2017 11:28 a.m.
San Ysidro's Gateway Inn demolished
"Some residents didn’t want to leave, although they described living in squalor. Rachel, a mother of nine children whose husband had been deported..." Why on earth do people who have no means have 9 children?— November 5, 2017 8:17 a.m.
