Lemon Grove goes upscale
This establishment is so diametric to its demographics. They will have to work hard to attract diners from outside the city limits because the locals have not been able to support even some inexpensive Mexican eateries in the past 5 years. Por Favor, Carnitas Uruapan, and Casa Del Sol (the property the subject restaurant occupies) close after operating for decades. This is not a gentrifying community, it is a community in decline with streets that have not been paved in 40 years and a rapidly rising crime rate. Unlike Little Italy where you can find live music, a craft beer while you wait for dinner and then have a gelato or coffee after a walk past all the night life, this outlier has quite a climb to establish itself as an out-of-the-way dining destination.— December 23, 2017 7:41 p.m.
Ace Parking sued for printing TMI on receipts
Been there. The best time to file a complaint with the Grand Jury is in July when the new jurists are sworn in. They will look through the submitted complaints, grievances and claims and look or something juicy and interesting. They have so many complaints stacked up and forwarded to the next jury, that it would take 10 years to catch up if all complaints were placed on a moratorium.— December 21, 2017 9:15 p.m.
Ace Parking sued for printing TMI on receipts
City contracts with towing companies, Ace parking and ambulance services should have a civilian review board as well as a Grand Jury review.— December 21, 2017 7:13 p.m.
Not on board: Conrad Prebys's live-in lover
Don, it would not be a story if a feud fueled by greed had not made it newsworthy. You didn’t start the fire.— December 19, 2017 6:28 p.m.
Foreign gas stations opening up to Mexico
Hopefully the retail gasoline market will begin to establish local ownership of stations. In the U.S., owning a gas station was a good middle class occupation. Breaking Mexican state owned monopolies will benefit the consumer and the entrepreneur. Let’s hope this is progress for Mexico.— December 18, 2017 6:14 p.m.
Not on board: Conrad Prebys's live-in lover
Don, thank you for reporting these interesting stories. In this matter it’s sad that it has become a public spectacle and dragging with it the good name Conrad Prebys. There’s no doubt how generous he was with his fortune when he had capacity. I know that most people realize this is a sideshow of greed and should not distract the community from recognizing the charitable efforts and selflessness of Mr. Prebys.— December 18, 2017 6:10 p.m.
Not on board: Conrad Prebys's live-in lover
Debra Turner must love money. What she was bequeathed was not enough. In all her years, who did she love? Conrad or his money? When the dirt has covered the coffin, the true motives emerge. A true lover, in my opinion, would be happy for the life they shared and good times, and certainly be happy with the millions she was left. But she wants more, even at the expense of a rightful heir. Greed or someone losing their mind?— December 17, 2017 8:42 p.m.
Border wedding included drug-smuggling groom
43 pounds of heroin... and after the street urchins cut it with Mannitol and Fentanyl, it will grow to 150 pounds, Which is enough to kill a fully seated San Diego Stadium. At least 50,000 people will die of overdose on that shipment alone. WTF are our courts doing? Ship that cretin to Singapore and let them administer first world justice.— December 17, 2017 8:36 p.m.
Not on board: Conrad Prebys's live-in lover
Stories like this always remind me of my ill-fated class-action lawsuit against Apple Computer. The Apple lawyer, one Bill Fenweck of Fenweck & West told me... "It's not about the merits of the case, it's about attrition. You do know what attrition is don't you? Well in legal engagement it means something like this. You file a complaint, we respond. You spend $100 and we spend $1000. Whoever runs out of money first, loses."— December 16, 2017 9:20 p.m.
Wrecking ball target: Drew Ford roundhouse
I remember roller-skating at Aquarius Roller Rink in the 1970's. There was an uproar when Drew bought the Aquarius dirt and then demolished it to pave a parking lot. That's progress. As far as the "Round House." it was an architectural intrigue at its time, but not something worth preserving.— December 13, 2017 10:02 p.m.
