Local lawyers speak on Scalia's death
"Justice Scalia Dead Following 30-Year Battle With Social Progress" The Onion— February 14, 2016 11:06 a.m.
Bánh mì makes it downtown
A La Francaise? I thought that bakery closed a long time ago. Is there another location, or where is the one you mention in this story?— February 12, 2016 11:22 a.m.
Former diner to become beauty mall
It's subleasing. Booth rentals. This guy is just taking on the risk of subleasing a bunch of small spaces for service workers, collecting rents and paying the landlord. $13 a sq. ft. for space? That's insanity.— February 12, 2016 9:40 a.m.
San Diego misses out on conductor
Yeah. Add me to the elders. I saw Birmingham and thought... "Alabama." "They have a symphony? lol....." But having earned a degree in history, I guess I (for shame) would associate Birmingham with our side-of-the-pond state of Alabama and its important role in the civil rights movement. Whatever. Roll Tide.— February 9, 2016 9:25 p.m.
Dean Spanos's new hired hand
Kind of off topic. But then when it comes to the subject of a somewhat possible development of the Mission Valley property, I find a curious thread in many of the comments I read in various media. Many people keep bringing up "tailgating at Mission Valley" and the "oh what wonder superbowls we will have..." The reality is that *any* development is going to eliminate the parking lot acreage at "Qualcomm." There will be little space remaining for "tailgating." Maybe an area reserved for motorhomes that pay a hefty fee to "tailgate." But the NFL and San Diego want most people to use the trolley. That leaves people captive to the food and beverage prices inside the profitdome. As far as superbowls, the way the NFL has committed itself to so many NFL actors, the likelihood of a "perma-superbowl" is out of the question. The reality is that San Diego might get one (1) superbowl every decade. So I will be dead before I see a forth Superbowl played in San Diego. (That's if I don't die before I see the third one.)— February 9, 2016 9:19 p.m.
Qualcomm executives sued
They have no shame. It's not policed, and they do not self-enforce. The H-1B scam is well established and thriving.— February 7, 2016 9:37 p.m.
Is the farm-to-table movement over?
Wow, very impressive knowledge on this farmers market stuff. Great post, I always learn something.— February 7, 2016 8:39 p.m.
Is the farm-to-table movement over?
Thank you. Now the "365" makes sense because of our growing climate. Anyway, when I shop at the various farmers markets I usually ask where was it grown. Also, when you shop frequently you get to know the people that are selling the goods and really don't need an additional layer of marketing to know where it's coming from.— February 7, 2016 1:34 p.m.
Is the farm-to-table movement over?
What does 365 have to do with it? (I know, that's the number of days in a year). Do they have a special logo for the leap years? As a consumer, 365 has no meaning to me. What message is that number supposed to communicate?— February 7, 2016 9:18 a.m.
Qualcomm executives sued
Sure he has given money. Most billionaires do. So that does not excuse his character flaws. In the real world, a true entrepreneur does not need to stoop to importing cheap labor --- that is lazy, Jabob's type lazy. A brilliant entrepreneur ascends from laziness and achieves an order of business that employees the domestic market labor at living wages or above. Irwin is a dinosaur. He gave money to his causes and to make a statement. Can he have a say in the devolution of Balboa Park? Sure. But he is generally not appreciated here. People do not care to make major and costly changes to Balboa Park. His nose in it comes with his powerful influence. He is not a private figure, he is public. And so he is not immune to public criticism. You admire him Don, but I think he is an opportunist, a patent thief and an American traitor. Because the concerns last wave of profitability was at the time when they were employing and certifying the most H-1B applications in San Diego County. Those "profits" benefited the already billionaire Jacobs at the expense of American citizens who were sold the narrative that if you got a computer science degree you would be golden, only to discover that criminal companies like Irwin Jacobs Qualcomm earned profits by employing foreign nationals rather than Americans.— February 6, 2016 10:34 p.m.
