Big Names Making Big Bucks -- Eli Manning and Paula Abdul
QUARTERBACK PAY UPDATE: The Chargers gave Phillip Rivers $92 million. That sounds nice, but it's a bit underpaid for what the market is. Typical Chargers move. And exactly why it should be hard for any fans in SD to fault Eli Manning for NOT wanting to play for the Chargers, who have low-balled players in the past. Eli is the top paid NFL player, and isn't even a top 10 QB. Rivers, most experts, will tell you is a top 5 quarterback in the league. And he's not being paid like one.— August 25, 2009 10:11 a.m.
James Cotton Meets James Cotton
Never saw that. But I did like the underrated Mike Myers movie "So I Married an Ax Murderer." There's a scene where he does this beat poetry thing to a woman named Harriet that he likes. The band accompanies him with a stand-up bass, a trumpet that's got muted, and these wonderful lines: Harriet. Harry-ette. Hard-hearted harbinger of haggis. Beautiful, bemuse-ed, bellicose butcher. Un-trust... ing. Un-know... ing. Un-love... ed? "He wants you back," he screamed into the night air like a fireman going to a window that has no fire... except the passion of his heart. I am lonely. It's really hard. This poem... sucks.— August 25, 2009 9:04 a.m.
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
I just bought the Dead Weather CD (maybe I was subconsciously influenced by all the pop-ups for it on this site). I was very disappointed. Two great songs (Hang You From the Heavens and Will There Be Enough Water?), the rest isn't very good. Yet, every time I've seen them live on a show, they rock. Now I'm even more curious to see their set at Street Scene.— August 25, 2009 1:23 a.m.
Pedicab Crackdown
Hey...we should see who can come up with the best caption for this picture.— August 25, 2009 1:20 a.m.
Pedicab Crackdown
The Obi guy would be able to say, with his hand raised in that hypnotical way: "I do not need to pay for this pedicab, do I?" The rider would get that dazed look in his eye, and repeat "You do not have to pay for this ride. Where shall I take you?"— August 25, 2009 1:19 a.m.
My Thoughts on Michael Douglas and Michael Vick
STEVE McNAIR UPDATE: The Titans are going to wear a sticker on their helmet with his number. I'm not sure that's a good idea. I mean, it's sad that he died. But he died while cheating on his wife, with a woman that was nuts and shot him because he was supposedly cheating on her with another woman. Is this someone we need to honor? Sure, he's one of the best players in that franchises early history, but still. How about we save the numbers and bands to memorialize players that went to a war, or died a bit more noble. Or just lived their life without the usual BS these football players seem to be involved in.— August 25, 2009 1:17 a.m.
Babies, Breast Feeding, and More
No verolica, because if I'm opposed to going there, having people "pick me up stuff" there, is basically the same thing. He had called me from the place, and so I had him pick me up a copy. I think I've been there 3 or 4 times in my life. And, I have mixed feelings about it. Because I told my stepdad, if we all boycotted it, and it went out of business (as he'd prefer), then those people getting paid crap, without the health benefits and other things he thinks they deserve...well, they're just going to be out of a job. It doesn't mean they are going to then move to a job that DOES give them better pay and benefits. Because, as I've always said, if you aren't happy with your job you can quit. If the workers at Walmart aren't treated fairly, they can quit.— August 25, 2009 1:13 a.m.
A Sunday Picnic -- Free From the Computer
Yeah, well...they did give birth before computers. They gave birth 100 years ago, but ya know what? There was a time when 50% of the births ended in a death. Either the child, or the mom delivering. So, I'm guessing computers, technology, and all that...are very important in the birthing process. I think it's funny when people talk about wanting to do the home birth, with no modern medicine. They talk about having babies the way the settlers did back in the old days. A comedian recently did a funny bit on this, about how you'd have to be doing that in your backyard, avoiding coyotes that will come and snatch the placenta. I guess you had to be there.— August 25, 2009 1:09 a.m.
James Cotton Meets James Cotton
Story...I'll be looking forward to reading about your adoptee. When that woman told me about her little Muddy Waters, it made me start thinking about dogs that had the names of old blues players. Howlin' Wolf, would be perfect. John Lee Hooker, well...that's not the best doggie name. (on a side note: rent CADILLAC RECORDS, a great movie, with amazing music).— August 25, 2009 1:05 a.m.
Pedicab Crackdown
I don't think all the pedicabs should be banned. I think tourists like to use them. And we should help support that aspect of it. I remember a few years back, I was parked so far away, I used one of them. I was able to make some phone calls, and write information down I needed, while the guy peddled me to my destination. It's just annoying when you're in your car and they cut you off.— August 24, 2009 2:26 p.m.
