Something Other Than Baseball
You guys bring up good points. Let me ask you this. I love the writing and stories of David Sedaris. But he has been knocked many times for doing this. And he admits to doing it. And part of me is bothered by him doing it. Because, it seems ANYONE can take childhood stories, stories about their families, and mix memory with fiction, to create a story that's a thousand times more interesting and funny. Although, I still read his stuff, so I guess I'm not bothered that much by it.— September 25, 2009 4:14 p.m.

SD...I was about to defend you when some idiot wondered why you and gringo had so many posts on here. But then I realized, like here, about 50 of them are wondering if two posters are one in the same. You seriously need to chill out on that. I think you've visited too many websites in your day. Maybe been hurt by a man or two, pretending to be someone they weren't. If fish is surfpuppy, and pete is really dave, who really cares? And usually, it seems you're wrong about these speculations anyway.— September 25, 2009 4:10 p.m.

Good points, Pete. Russ....you make a good point. Stats would be inaccurate. But, I'm sure there's at least some doctors that can give a ballpark figure on how often it occurs. And I'm guessing incest is extremely rare (between father and daughter). It's probably fairly common (relatively speaking, no pun intended) with cousins. But not father/daughter or son/mother. And, I'm the king of saying that I believe anyone is capable of anything. OJ was one of the nicest athletes. Always did interviews. And he killed two people. That Yale gal who was killed and hidden in a wall. The boy that did that was supposedly super nice and his friends can't imagine him doing it. Anyone, can do anything. I put nothing past anyone. But as Jane Velez-Mitchell just said on CNN....addicts lie. They lie all the time (and Mackenzie is an addict). If she is no longer an addict, she's newly sober. And the one thing they tell newly sober people is, they are not supposed to do these types of things at this stage of sobriety. They're supposed to stay focused on staying sober. And lastly, Jane brings up what I have also brought up. Motive. She could have anger, that her dad probably is the one that got her started on drugs (even at the very least, by having a cavaler attitude about drug use), and there's a resentment there. That could cause more lying about the behavior between the two of them.— September 25, 2009 4:05 p.m.
That Fish Smell
Yes, Tales of Brave Ulysses. That's the song! I love the wah wah guitar, and the backwards symbol played. What a great tune. And, how about SWLABR...again with the 60s lyrics, that stood for: she was like a bearded rainbow. I do sometimes, believe it or not, google when I need to find lyrics. I'm just lazy, and often times, weird pop-ups come up. And I just didn't want some weird fish porn popping up (or a re-creation of that mudshark/snapper story, which I first read in Hammer of the Gods). Now, I wouldn't mind hearing the song Fish Heads, which I haven't heard in a billion years.— September 25, 2009 3:55 p.m.
This. And That.
I agree that SD fans are weak. Once, the Rolling Stones sold out every city they played but San Diego. And with the sports teams...The Clippers were only drawing a few thousand fans. Now, no matter how bad the team is, it's an NBA team. We could watch Norm Nixon and Bill Walton, playing against other NBA greats. And nope, not enough fans to even make money! Raiderfan...if you want to bet on who does more this season (meaning how far they go in the playoffs), we can make a $500 bet going to the persons favorite charity. But I once made a bet with a Raider fan for $25, and they never paid. Now, I'm not going to say all Raider fans are like that...but....— September 25, 2009 3:50 p.m.
Fun Football Stories
Pete, you need to go out and get some v. Instead of just writing the word constantly in posts, where it doesn't apply. I don't think LT is having that much fun anymore. And the Chargers did their typical bad moves. They had Michael Turner, who every time touched the ball, made things happen with it. And isntead of realizing LT was getting older, or that they could have two beasts, they let Turner go. I do understand it would've been expensive to keep him, but I'm guessing it wasn't cheap for the Niners to have Montana, Young, and Bono all at the QB position. And all players that would've started on every other team in the NFL (well, maybbe a few teams wouldn't have started Bono). I thought Sanders was amazing. As Pete said, he was saddled with a bad team. I mean, an awfully bad team. LT kind of has it made, in the fact that he had Brees, a good quarterback. And Rivers, a great quarterback. And Gates, one of the top tight ends in the game...and that helps open things up for him. Much like Emmitt Smith, who probably wouldn't have done all that much, had he not been on amazing Cowboy teams, with the best O-line in football. The one thing I didn't like about Sanders was that he'd sometimes run sideways. Maybe I'm saying that wrong. I ain't no Bum Phillips, so I can't describe that running style. But, sometimes when a hole isn't there or whatever...you should just plow ahead and pick up two or three tough yards. Sanders would run to the side, and lose 4 or 5 yards. I remember a few games where he actually had negative yards. And a few games where he had under 20 yards. But, those were very few games. The guy was simply amazing on the gridiron. I never really saw Sanders run thru people, the way you say, garden. But if you want to talk about running thru you, nobody beats Earl Campbell. I've seen games and highlights, where he just knocks someone on their butt, and picks up 8 yards going thru about 3 defenders. Hey...who was the running back...I seem to think Hershel Walker or Bo Jackson...it was against Seattle. And everyone was making such a big deal about that bust Brian Bostworth. And this back ran into him at the 8 yard line, and just ran right thru his sorry butt, on his way to the end zone. Anyone remember that play? It was one of the funniest, most fun times I ever had watching a game.— September 25, 2009 3:32 p.m.
One Dad at a Time -- Celebrity Sex Scandals
Those are great points, comedian (although not very humorous!) But I'm not just "jumping on a bandwagon". I had said to my friends, from day one, that something seems odd about her story. For example, I would've had a lot less trouble believing her, if she gave us a back story. Something like "All the time I was growing up, my dad said I was ugly. He said I looked like a boy. He would tell me no man would ever find me attractive." Some sort of way he was breaking her down, lowering her self-esteem, or whatever. Instead, it was just that he's this great dad, singer/songwriter, until he taught her to roll joints at age 11. Then, at 19, he brings over drugs, gets her passed out, and rapes her. Oh, and that leads to a decade of romance, which includes him asking her to move to Fiji with him, where they won't be looked down upon for having such a relationship. It's just not sounding right. Pete...no reason to upset Fish. I think she just feels strongly about her side. I can never fault someone for that. I just wish they would defend their side (much like you have about Favre or other football teams, in those sports threads we have going). For people to spout off that I'm insensitive, or wrong...and then they offer nothing to back it up. Or they talk about these great Chinese philosophers they read, or some old African-American that wrote a book about race relations in the 50s and 60s...and this is supposed to be give them brownie points in a debate that has little to do with something like that. It all just baffles me. So Fish...tell us...how common do you think incest is? And why are there holes in Mackenzies story?— September 25, 2009 3:13 p.m.
That Fish Smell
Dang, you guys know you're Woodstock! Speaking of fish lines, how about that Cream song from Disraeli Gears, which is great. The line of the chorus is: The tiny purple fishes/run laughing thru your fingers.... Oops. Can't remember the rest of it. Maybe something like: And you want to take her with you/To the violence of the sun. Gotta love the lyrics in the 60s.— September 25, 2009 10:07 a.m.
This. And That.
I love all the hoops talk. Well, sure, Pat Riley did okay for himself as a coach, winning those rings with the Lakers. But he wasn't a very good player. Did you hear that Calvin Murphy (who had a free throw record for the longest time, and was very angry when it got broken)...I believe he got arrested and did jail time for child molestation. And yes, I realize Johnny U was at the end of his career. But my point is this. Pete was saying the Chargers had NO HISTORY, and to me, that is certainly history. Having, perhaps the best QB of all time, with his last season, while a future Hall of Famer (Fouts) is in the wings, is certainly interesting football "history". It's like Jordan playing for Washington, or Hank Aaron and Willie Mays...didn't they both have a season with another team?— September 25, 2009 10:02 a.m.
One Dad at a Time -- Celebrity Sex Scandals
Fish: I guess my point to you is this. You tell me I know nothing about incest. And I'll be the first to admit, you're right. But you're not explaining anything about it, either. I don't know if after a dad rapes his daughter, that triggers something in her mind. Does she think about how the father is always right and she should do what he says? Or what? Instead, I make a flippant comment about what her mindset was, and you say it's offensive. And again, you say incest is "common". So...there should be lots of examples you can tell me about what a 19-year-old womans mindset is when she enters into such a relationship.— September 25, 2009 9:58 a.m.
