Filippi's — Poway
Of all these pizza places, this one is my least favorite. The one in Little Italy is excellent. As is the one in Mira Mesa. I've heard from a few friends, that they feel the same way. One even went into great detail to tell me that the owner is the woman who is divorced from the original owner, and she did things differently. It's still probably the best pizza in Poway. As long as you don't mind dealing with the soccer and baseball teams, and occasional screaming kids. The pizza is thick. And it smells incredible right when you walk in the door. I love the antipasta salad, too. But it's huge. Better to share that with someone before chowing down on the pies. Their meatball sandwiches rule!— August 11, 2008 11:49 p.m.
Red Sails
My friend worked for the Harbor Police, and he once said to me, "It took me many times of coming here, before I could decide if I liked it or not." The few times I had lunch there, I was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable prices. Great view of the boats, too. I bought my mom a gift certificate there, when I got her tickets for Humphrey's down the block (for that concert, Neville Brothers, they ran out of dinner packages). And...my mom ran into problems using the certificate. And, she didn't care for the food. Oh well.— August 11, 2008 11:46 p.m.
Humphreys by the Bay
Keep in mind, if you want to save a little money, you can eat in the lounge. They have an amazing Thai salad, that is very reasonably priced. And, a great dessert selection, too. If a band is playing in the backstage lounge, it can be a pricey cover to get in (Van Morrisons daughter cost me $40 for two tickets!). But, nothing like hearing Steely Damned, or some other tribute band after you just watched a show in the outdoor area, and having a late night nosh.— August 11, 2008 11:43 p.m.
Embers Grille
I always saw this place when I went to a girlfriends house that lived in Point Loma. It looks great from the outside, with the neon lights. But maybe, since it's right next to a Denny's, it's some kind of illustion. I was very disappointed with the food. We went there twice. And, the selection of stuff was great. But, I tried two different things (can't remember what they were now), and didn't care for either of them.— August 11, 2008 11:40 p.m.
Bali Hai
Barb just wrote about this in one of her recent columns. Great view of the water. The food is great. They have one of the best Sunday brunch buffets. It may be pricey for some (I think it was $29 a person), but it was one of the best I've ever had. You can't beat the view, from whatever seat you have.— August 11, 2008 11:38 p.m.
Ruby's Diner
This place is great for out-of-town guests, because you walk down the end of the pier. But, for a burger joint...and a 50s one (which I usually love), it's not my favorite. The burgers don't come with fries. How lame is that? Their breakfasts are horrible. But, go for lunch, order fries on the side, and enjoy looking at the ocean.— August 11, 2008 11:36 p.m.
Matisse Bistro
These places are tiny. But, they have a decent bakery if you just want to jump in for a pastry and coffee. I usually hit up the one near Horton Plaza before I see concerts at Spreckles.— August 11, 2008 11:33 p.m.
The Shout House
I've been here twice. I can't remember a thing about the food. But if you're looking for a good time, this place can't be beat. They have these places in many cities. In one place (I think Las Vegas), it's called The Shout House. Other places call them "Dueling Pianos" and things like that. The people on stage do parody songs which are hysterical. They also have a lot of parties going on...so, there might be a bachelorette party, and they bring those people on stage to embarass them. And, it's entertaining for everyone else in the crowd. They do weird/fun things like have a tip jar. And, if they're playing a song someone requested that you hate (ie Journey or Abba), you can put money in the jar and they'll stop playing that song immediately. It'll cost you $100 if you want to hear Freebird.— August 11, 2008 11:31 p.m.
Sammy's Woodfired Pizza Downtown
Their pepperoni chop salad kicks ass. I always try to order a salad, since I think it's healthier. But so many places have salads I don't care for. Their Chinese chicken salad is good, too. And yeah, the pizza's are great. But if you're dieting, you'll blow it when the people with you order the pies!— August 11, 2008 11:29 p.m.
Basic Urban Kitchen and Bar
This place just looks like a huge, brick warehouse. It's open late, which is great. And, the variety of pizza toppings will blow you away. I had mashed potatoes and spinach on one. Delicious. The pepporini was great. They are huge pizza pies, and a good value. The 20 something hipster crowd can be annoying, but hey...what can you do?— August 11, 2008 11:26 p.m.
