Don't Tase Me, Sonny!
Who says you'll be in Hell? If there's a God, he'll be glad to have your rapiers wit and heathen ideas up there! MsGrant...if she's a crazy old lady, why would you "let her go"? So she could drive through a drive-thru? So she could run over a pedestrian? When I was a kid, there was a crazy woman (in her 30s), who drove into our cul-de-sac, with about 7 cops chasing her. She wouldn't get out of the car. The cops threatened to break the window. It was a stand-off that lasted 45 minutes, before all the cops left but one. I couldn't hear what he was telling her, but she never got out of the car like she was asked. And it didn't look like she got a ticket, which surpised me. Well, one month later, there's a story in the paper about a woman murdering her two kids, and locking herself in the laundry room at her house. Cops broke down the door and dragged her in. The paper said she was involved in a high speed chase a month earlier (which is how we realized it was the same woman). Now, had she been arrested, and given mental evaluations, maybe her kids stay alive. I know it sounds like I'm cruel, in regards to my feeling on the old folks...but, as much as I loved my grandmother, when she yelled at waiters or the baggers at the grocery store, I started yelling at her. I didn't think 16 year old kids needed to be scolded from some old lady that thinks they didn't give her the discount on her expired coupons! I know that logic can be harsh, but really...old people can't just run around like space cadets. I mean...have you seen the video on one of those police camera shows...where a guy is driving the wrong way down a two or three lane freeway? The cop is riding next to him (on the correct side of the freeway), with lights and sirens blaring, and the guy continues on for another 5 miles. Now, even if he doesn't see the cop, why the hell is he not noticing the cars that are dodging his car as he barrells for them like Mr. MaGoo??? And, the cop just laughed about it, as did the guy. I don't think he should've been tased, but he should've had his license taken away, and right there and then.— June 11, 2009 9:12 p.m.
A Bundle
I didn't like Drag Me to Hell for all sorts of reasons. And a few of my friends tried to tell me that "I'm just not into horror movies." But I liked Exorcist and some of those 70s films. Even a few like Halloween or The Omen, were good, scary fun. This movie wasn't funny in the parts that were supposed to be. And the scary parts, not very scary. The premise for the movie was okay...but, then you have two lead actors that look like they are 12. And...geez, there's just so much wrong with that movie, I can't start listing it now. The Hangover was disappointing. A few laughs, but not enough to warrant all the praise it's getting from the critics. Not sure though, rickey...what you're arguing. It sounds like you and Duncan didn't like it.— June 11, 2009 9:04 p.m.
Hooray for Hollywood
Speaking of "manning up", you need to do the same. You say "one" of the many problems in the educational system, is "racism". To me, this is the most ignorant statement you may have ever made. In any thread. So, let's just say for arguments sake (since I'm not talking to you directly to know what percentage you think that is)...I'm guessing you think that's at least 20% of the problem. To me, it's about 2% of the problem. A small enough number that it's not even worth addressing (much like the women making less than men, which is probably 2% of the work field that has this "problem"). Saying you'd rather have a scholar in the White House than a cowboy, I sort of agree. But you know what the problem is with people and there politics? I bet a Republican could say they'd rather have someone in the White House that wasn't just trying to sleep with every woman they came across, including interns. Yet, Clinton was a great president. Had Bush been a great President, I wouldn't care if he was a cowboy, didn't know who F. Scott Fitzgerald was (he once called the novel "The Greatest Gatsby"), or if his VP can't spell "potato". Because, you want to know something? There hasn't been a President in our history, that's as caring and wonderful a human being as Jimmy Carter. He's also one of the worst Presidents we've ever had. So whether someone is a cowboy that can't pronounce "nuclear", or is an African-American...none of that matters to me. I like to see what kind of job they're doing, and how that helps/hurts our country, before making judgements.— June 11, 2009 4:11 p.m.
Don't Tase Me, Sonny!
I read what Burwell wrote. Can't say I agree. I was against the beach booze ban (even though I don't even drink on the beach, I believe people should the right to do that; I also think that a few bad apples shouldn't spoil it for everyone). That being said, if a drunk gets out of line, I think the cops should tase, mace, or shoot...if that's what it takes to get him/her under control. So, I'm curious SD. Does your little liberal heart just hate the idea that police have to get rough with people? Or, just because it's poor people you think are picked on by the police. What? Tell me what cops should do with old people that get out of line. I'm not saying the old person the other day, here in San Diego, that drove thru a building (which seems to happen on a weekly basis). I'm talking about, for example, this old lady that was pulled over and not cooperating with a cop. Simply because she didn't want a ticket. How would you, if you were an officer, handle it?— June 11, 2009 4:04 p.m.
Hooray for Hollywood
I agree 100% (with the Reagan comments). It kills me whenever someone talks about him as being a "great President." I guess my problem with Michael Moore is when he specifically has knocked Republicans on shows, because "all they care about is getting rich and making money," yet he is rich and making money (by making films about all that). So, unless he wants to donate all that money, or a lot of it, he should keep quiet. I once heard Moore, on Bill O'Reilly, say that he thinks rich people should pay 80% of what they make in taxes, because they can afford it more than poor people. Now, that is the stupidest logic I have ever heard. And it shows his mindset.— June 11, 2009 9:20 a.m.
A Chihuahua Named Wanda
I take my mutt to parties, if they are dog friendly. I mean, hey...I didn't get a dog from the pound just to have him sit at home while I'm out partying all the time. So, if there's a party at a park or outdoors, I sometimes bring him.— June 11, 2009 9:15 a.m.
Celebrity Sex Scandal Stuff
Yeah, it is weird I never watched the show. I was real young, and the blind guy kinda freaked me out with those white, milky eyes. Also weird considering I was into karate (what kid isn't?) And I loved those cheesy Bruce Lee movies (he apparently got screwed over for the part, too). When I was forced to read Siddhartha in school (possible the most boring book ever), I thought at the time, that Kung Fu was probably a lot like it. Lastly...I don't have speakers that work on my computer. So, I wouldn't be able to hear those. I'll check them out on my girlfriends computer. And, speaking of checking things out...if you're on Al Gore's site, try to find out why he never debates scientists on certain issues regarding his global warming. Or his response to some of the mistakes in the movie he did. I'm also curious as to how much money he's made from various companies that are "for" the environment. I heard it was over $200 million. (i'm just sayin').— June 11, 2009 1:39 a.m.

(continued) Your story about the Mexican girl was sad. And I understand there are situations like that. But I don't think those things are the norm. At the elementary school I went to in Mira Mesa, all races played together on the playground. Sure, there were bullies. They picked on the weaker kids. OF ALL RACES. Again, life isn't this after school special we've all seen. I have a step-sister that is exactly like the Mexican girl you described. Now, as an adult, she has lots of issues. Some of my friends feel sorry for her, because they feel she's this way because of her childhood and not feeling like she fits in because of her weight, etc. But ya know what? As adults, it's time to get your s*** together. If a person with issues knows that, or is told that, they should seek help. Some people have mental issues that lead to their death. Whether that's a Karen Carpenter (uh oh...there I go again bringing up celebrities out of nowhere)and women with eating disorders, or women that throw their kids off a bridge or drown them in a bathtub. I don't have time to say we should have all these programs, for all these people, with all these problems. There just isn't enough money and resources for this. Seriously, your plan for teachers getting these hardcore degrees just to teach...sure, it sounds great. But for a teacher to start at $38,000 a year? And then get laid off in a few years, because of budget cuts. It's the same problem we have with everyone saying we should all just have medical insurance. Well, yeah, in theory it would be great to have everyone, including low-income families, being able to go to the doctor. But...for this to happen, to we then insist doctors make only $50,000 a year, to make this economically viable?— June 11, 2009 1:36 a.m.

Well, the only point during this that you nailed me was your ending. That was a nice "snap" as the kids would say. Do you realize that me commenting on cops on steroids in that way, was a bit of a sarcstic little joke. It was a far cry from you misquoting and saying that I said it was "cool" for cops to do steroids. I sure hope you aren't doing this with all these other scenarios you bring to the table. Regarding me not understanding another persons experience, what does that even mean? I love observing people. So, when I tell you I witnessed the cashier at 7-11 look at those kids, and nothing more, it's making a point. What if, let's say, one kid just happened to look up and see the cashier look at him. Does he interpret that as "the cashier was mad dogging me, giving me dirty looks." When a cashier might just be concerned for his store/business. And a group of kids could steal, turn off customers, or do a million other things that aren't good for business. I can give you about 20 scenarios, where a friend of mine claimed racism. One involved a black friend that was at a donut shop. He told me that a cop drew his gun on him, and asked for ID. This guy showed ID, and the cop asked his license plate number (or something like that), and after a minute, the officer explained he fit the description of someone that robbed a liquor store nearby. Did this cop do something wrong? I don't think he did. My friend does. Another black co-worker (and I've told this story before), told me cops harass him when he drives. Well, when I pressed him for details, he said it was because he was driving a car that hadn't been registered in 4 years. I've got about 18 more stories like this. But you know what's funny? I have about 500 stories from my white friends/family members, where cops were jerks to them (okay...maybe 200). And in my group of friends, this would include 4 that are officers. I get to hear THEIR SIDE of stories as well.— June 11, 2009 1:35 a.m.

I have too much work right now to address all this. But a few things. I never said cops taking steroids is "cool". I said that...with everything else needed to be done in society, checking cops for steroids is small potatoes. I'm all for cops being held accountable for shooting crazy women in parking lots in Oceanside, or keeping cops from stealing stuff out of the evidence room. But not checking to see how much they can bench press, and why they are getting more muscular, when the state has no money and lay-offs are happening left and right. The only other thing I wanted to comment on now, is the idiotic notion you bring up about a kid of a certain race walking into 7-11 and being "eyed" by the cashier. You know how stupid a cliche that is? I go into 7-11 every day to buy a Big Gulp...and never have I seen cashiers look at any customer of a different race that way. Once, near Wangenheim Junior High School...I saw about 7 kids that (5 African-American, 1 white, 1 Asian), and they were being loud (no more loud and obnoxious than any other group of 7 kids that age. I was the third person in line, and I saw the cashier glance at them quickly, and then went back to helping the person at his register. The kids went to the magazine rack, and I thought maybe the cashier was going to use that goofy line "Hey...this isn't a library!" But they quickly grew tired of the mags, grabbed some candy bars, and got in line. No problems. And this is how most of society operates. To act like businesses "eye" certain people that come in...well, you've watched too many movies.— June 10, 2009 4:22 p.m.
