BREAKING NEWS BLOG -- Michael Jackson and Farrah Die
Yes! Colts it was! Mindy, using one ethnic person who succeeded, as a point for WHY their isn't racism, doesn't really work. Because, in the 60s, Sidney Poitter was making movies, getting nominated for Oscars; Willie Mays and Hank Aaron were tearing up major league baseball, Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell were the two best centers in the NBA...and I guarantee blacks didn't have it easy in the U.S. I just think the word gets thrown around a lot today, when the problem is, to me, in most places...hardly a problem. I think MsG brought up a good point, in her Bush analogy. Had he never been elected, and it was Obama that talked that way...it would've been brought up ALL THE TIME, as oppose to with Bush, it was only brought up by comedians and late night talk shows.— June 28, 2009 2:30 p.m.
BREAKING NEWS BLOG -- Michael Jackson and Farrah Die
I initially thought, as I was posting, that it might have been "studs"...but for some reason, I don't think it was. THIS JUST IN: Billy Mays, that TV pitchman, died. I believe it was a day after an airplane accident, but they don't think that had anything to do with it. And no foul play was suspected. He was 50. Just like Michael Jackson. Maybe 50 is the new 27.— June 28, 2009 12:15 p.m.
BREAKING NEWS BLOG -- Michael Jackson and Farrah Die
Well, for a restaurant sign (with that theme), that's cute and works. I saw a restaurant near Del Mar, can't remember which one, and the sign said "fillies" and...dang, now I can't remember what the other sign said!— June 28, 2009 9:58 a.m.
Oscar Nominations
That's EXACTLY what I thought. And everyone understands that some great movies sometimes don't get nominated. I remember as a kid, everyone being freaked out that Full Metal Jacket didn't get nominated. I remember a few years back, a lot of critics being bummed that Rushmore wasn't nominated. Both of those movies I thought were good, but not great. (and, nothing ever changes the fact that a movie like Raging Bull CAN get nominated in 1980...but lose the Oscar to a movie like Ordinary People...only to have Raging Bull NOW considered to be the best movie of that decade)— June 28, 2009 9:56 a.m.
Keep the Tip!
andrea: my stepbrother says the same thing. he gets mad when i give a big tip, simply because i liked the waiter/waitress' personality. but to me, that goes a long way.— June 28, 2009 9:53 a.m.
Keep the Tip!
Rickey: I didn't woos out. I think I left him $3. I don't care about running into the waiter again a few minutes later, although when I use my credit card, he might remember the name. Part of the problem was...he asked us if we wanted more bread. And, I usually don't care about the bread that's brought over before the meal, unless it's Wild Note Cafe (near Belly Up Tavern), Macaroni Grill, or Pat & Oscar's. So, he did do a few things right. Although, we also waited FOREVER to get the check, so I felt a low tip was justified. Can't tell you how the pizza stacks up, because it's been so long since I've had it. I remember it being good. I love their chinese chicken salad. It's the same thing with Sammy's. I love their chopped pepperoni salad so much, I rarely have the pizza. Now, the carna asada pizza at California Pizza Kitchen...that's some good eatin' right there.— June 28, 2009 9:51 a.m.
Conspiracy Theories
We can't, rickey. Because some people here think we can learn from him. Others here probably think that would be racist. I'm always willing to give him a clean slate. Each blog topic, when he comments, I'll read and see what he has to say. He has a point about 5% of the time. And I think it's a nice diversion, to see his crazy rants. And maybe people will realize, it's people like HIM that cry racism in America. And maybe those cries should be taken the same way as the boy who cried wolf.— June 28, 2009 12:08 a.m.
Old Neighborhood, New Friends
I never read Cat's Cradle...but I'll put on the Harry Chapin album and listen to "Cats in the Cradle". Magic, it was great meeting you. Although, if truth be told, I enjoyed meeting the other Magic...Magic Johnson...a lot more. After all, he was my all-time favorite basketball player. And when I drove up to LA to meet him at an event, it was such a thrill (even though my car got towed and ticketed). I'll be looking forward to your next trip (and next blog). Enjoy what's left of your weekend.— June 27, 2009 11:55 p.m.
BREAKING NEWS BLOG -- Michael Jackson and Farrah Die
On a much lighter note, but one that's sure to offend someone, my friend sent these to me. I thought I'd cut and paste them: Call me insensitive.. but it's a dirty job for which someone needs to take responsibility! Wacko Jacko has asked to be buried at sea.......................preferably between 2 buoys! Michael Jackson's upcoming London dates have been cancelled......... They were James (aged11) and Thomas (age 9) Michael Jackson Died in L.A last night. Doctors said he didn't go stiff until they wheeled him past the childrens ward! (is it me, or does the first joke not work? i don't think that word was pronounced "boys")— June 27, 2009 10:04 p.m.
NBA -- Playoffs and Personalities
Well, who knows how well Gwynn would've done on another team, but homeboy is a Hall of Famer, and one of the best hitters ever. I'm sure he would've done okay. Hall of Famers don't just go to other teams and stink it up (unless it's at the end of their career, and they still continue to try and live those glory years). Now, I don't think you truely understand athletes, and what PR dictates they say. ANY ATHLETE is going to sound foolish, if they say, "Yeah, I'd rather win league MVP, then have a championship ring." But I guarantee you, Kobe sure wanted that MVP for the series, as Shaq had the two when they played together, and he felt he had something to prove, doing it without the big man (although that argument has always been weak to me, as most teams need at least two All-Stars to go all the way). But, if you were to ask any college or high school basketball player...if this year they could be on that Lakers team, sitting the bench but getting a ring (because of Pau and Kobe), or would they rather BE Lebron James, who didn't win a ring, but got the league MVP, endorsements, and all those big games. Which do you suppose those athletes would pick? And that, proves my point. HOLLABACK BOI— June 26, 2009 10:07 p.m.
