Stupid Cops and the Stupid People That Hate Cops
First, Surf...let me ask you this. If you don't have to give that information to the officer, what happens if...let's just say for the sake of argument, that the cop DID HEAR LOUD NOISE out front, before coming inside to investigate. What procedure can and can't happen? Can the homeowner say to the cop "We weren't being loud, therefore, I'm not going to provide my birthday or name. We will try to keep the volume down, but keep in mind, we have a neighbor that is just harassing us with these calls." And what if the cop comes back later, and hears loud music. What can the cop do then? I really, really want to hear the procedure you think the officer should follow. Now, all that being said...something I AM STILL WONDERING ABOUT... Why is the person that called 911 not being cited? This person called 911 for a non-emergency. Am I right? We make fun of the crazy woman calling 911 because she couldn't get chicken mcnuggets, or the guy that wasn't getting his sandwich made the proper was at Subway. Yet...to me, this is along those same lines. YOU NEVER SHOULD call 911 for a noise complaint. That is not an emergency. And to me, those other two crazy people were cited for calling 911, why not this guy as well? (I know that's off topic, but I'm still wondering about it)— July 7, 2009 4:29 p.m.
NBA -- Playoffs and Personalities
Spliff...you are contradicting yourself. Because Jud Beuachler WAS a bench player. I think he averaged something like 6 minutes a game. And he's the example we originally used. But, a bench player I'm guessing, would be the same mind-set as a player that had a good career, but not a great (ie Lebron, Kobe) career. They'd rather have the Lebron career, and no ring. Then a few rings, and be named Robert Horry.— July 7, 2009 10:34 a.m.
BREAKING NEWS BLOG -- Michael Jackson and Farrah Die
What's the deal? All the stations are showing the funeral and festivities. C'mon. I want to see some regular news. My friend just sent me an email saying that most people say when they see the person in the coffin "They look so natural." And she wonders if they'll say that with Jackson, since he didn't look natural when he was alive. I have to admit, that's a good point.— July 7, 2009 10:32 a.m.
Stupid Cops and the Stupid People That Hate Cops
Ponzi...I have no problem with a cop using the logic of "guilty until proven innocent" when suspecting a person of drunk driving. Because, how often have you met someone somewhere, and you are having a conversation, and within five minutes you can tell they are toasted? Well...if you or I had three glasses of wine, I'm guessing we can still hold a conversation. And we can still drive, without swirving all over the road. But, other people might not be able to, and if having that conversation is a way for the cop to garner more information, and REALLY be sure the person is drunk, I have no problem with that, either. Because at the end of the day, the person that hasn't had a drop of alcohol will quickly be proven to be stone-cold sober. And the officer will probably just bark "Try not to swirve so much," or whatever caused the initial stop.— July 7, 2009 10:30 a.m.
Stupid Cops and the Stupid People That Hate Cops
SF comments continued with my answers in caps: Is it OK for the cops to harass ANYBODY, even those who are not nice to them? If so, then we've got more to talk about. THAT COP I TALKED TO...OFFICER MUNOZ, IS PROOF THAT THEY DO NOT HARASS YOU JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT NICE TO THEM. ALTHOUGH, IN HINDSIGHT, I WAS NICE TO HIM. I JUST TOLD HIM HE WAS A D**KHEAD, FOR GIVING ME A 15 MINUTE LECTURE. LET ME GIVE YOU AN INTERESTING, WEIRD EXAMPLE. I WAS WATCHING ONE OF THESE COP SHOWS. I BELIEVE IT WAS "FORENSIC FILES." THIS SERIAL KILLER WAS PULLED OVER BY A COP A WEEK BEFORE HE KILLED SOME VICTIM AND WAS CAUGHT. THIS GUY DID NOT HAVE A DRIVERS LICENSE OR ANY ID. THE COP, NICELY, KEPT ASKING HIM WHY HE WOULD DRIVE WITHOUT A LICENSE AND BLAH BLAH BLAH. THEY HAD 10 MINUTE CONVERSATION. THE COP RAN HIS NAME, AND IT CHECKED OUT AS THE PERSON HE SAID. SO HE LET THE GUY GO. WITH A WARNING. OR MAYBE IT WAS JUST A VERBAL WARNING. BUT THERE WAS ANOTHER WARRANT OUT FOR HIS ARREST, TO BE QUESTIONED, ON THE DISAPPEARANCE OF A GIRLFRIEND. SO, THE OFFICER BEING "NICE" LET A SERIAL KILLER GO. BUT IF YOU WATCH THE VIDEO (FROM THE COPS CAR), YOU'D THINK THE COP DID HIS JOB WONDERFULLY. THIS WAS A GUY THAT LOOKED "NORMAL" AND SAID THE RIGHT THINGS. When is it the cop's fault? You had a cop who acted in a manner which probably broke the law. It sounds like your detention was "unreasonably delayed" which violates your civil rights. This proves that cops are sometimes in the wrong. I'M NOT SO SURE THE COP BROKE THE LAW WITH ME. HE JUST SPENT 15 MINUTES LECTURING ME. I know the title is "Stupid Cops and the Stupid People Who Hate Cops" but you really do absurdly contradict yourself. You show your experience with a bad cop and then you disparage anybody who is against bad cops. I DON'T THINK THAT COP WITH ME WAS "BAD". i THINK HE DID WHAT MOST COPS DO. THEY TAKE PERSONAL OFFENSE WHEN YOU BREAK THE LAW. AND THEY SHOULDN'T. IF YOU'RE DRIVING 85 ON THE FREEWAY, YOU AREN'T DOING IT WITH A MIDDLE FINGER EXTENDED TOWARDS THEM, YET THEY OFTEN ACT THAT WAY. AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES A COP "STUPID". THEY SHOULD JUST GIVE THE TICKETS. AND, THEY DON'T NEED TO GET ALL HOT AND BOTHERED IF SOME DRIVER STARTS YELLING AT THEM. THEY CAN IGNORE IT, UNTIL IT SEEMS TO BE DANGEROUS. OR A THREAT AGAINST THE OFFICER. If you look at some of the posts at the UT website, other cops have posted saying how much they hate stupid cops. AS I SAID IN ONE OF MY POSTS ABOVE, COPS ARE JUST LIKE FIREFIGHTERS, TEACHERS, PLUMBERS, MECHANICS, ETC. THERE ARE GOOD, BAD, AND MEDIOCRE IN EVERY FIELD. UNFORTUNATELY, WITH COPS, THAT MEANS WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH THAT.— July 7, 2009 10:27 a.m.
Stupid Cops and the Stupid People That Hate Cops
SF: I cut-and-pasted your comments here and I'll answer them in all caps: Josh, With regard to your original post, given some of the comments here, have you changed your mind on any of these issues? NO I HAVEN'T Do you still believe that walking away in your own kitchen is the same as driving away at 70mph on the freeway? NOT REALLY THE SAME THING, BUT CLOSE. AS RICKEYSAYS SAYS ABOVE...A COP IS TRYING TO IDENTIFY YOU. IF YOU FAIL TO GIVE HIM/HER THE INFO THEY REQUEST, THEY CAN DETAIN YOU AND TAKE YOU IN. IF YOU AREN'T COOPERATING, THAT WILL BECOME PHYSICAL. Do you really think that these rich democrats hate cops? I DON'T THINK ANYONE "HATES" COPS. THEY CALL THEM WHEN THEIR HOUSES ARE BURGLARIZED, AND FOR OTHER REASONS. BUT THEY ALL "HATE" COPS WHEN THEY ARE THE ONES BREAKING THE LAW. WHICH ALWAYS BAFFLES ME. IS A COP SUPPOSED TO JUST GIVE THOSE PEOPLE A BREAK? That assuming 99% of noise complaints go smoothly, (whatever that means) YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS? I JUST THREW THAT NUMBER OUT THERE...BUT UPON REFLECTION, MAYBE IT'S 90%. its the 1% standing on their rights who are the "problem with society?" Should we all hand over our ID's and be detained for longer than we wish? YES. WE SHOULD ALL DO WHAT THE COP SAYS, EVEN IF THAT MEANS WE ARE DETAINED LONGER THAN WE'D LIKE. I SERIOUSLY BELIEVE, HAD THIS WOMAN JUST SAID "lOOK OFFICER KRUPKE...THIS NEIGHBOR WAS YELLING THINGS OVER THE FENCE EARLIER. HE DOESN'T AGREE WITH ME POLITCALLY. WE WEREN'T MAKING A LOT OF NOISE." THE COP WOULD'VE ANSWERED THAT "YEAH, I DIDN'T HEAR ANY NOISE WHEN I PULLED UP" OR "WELL, IT WAS A BIT LOUD WHEN I LISTENED FROM OUTSIDE." AND YOU GO FROM THERE.— July 7, 2009 10:26 a.m.
Two Athletes Shot to Death -- Steve McNair and Alexis Arguello
Well...she wasn't armed. The reporters were she bought the gun illegally a week before hand. Yes, rich, famous athletes can land hot 20-year-olds. And that's a perk they should get to enjoy. But if they want to enjoy that, they can easily refrain from ever getting married. Or, at the very least, they can be honest and upfront with the woman. They don't need to promise them they're leaving their wife (not that we know if McNair did this, I'm just saying).— July 7, 2009 10:10 a.m.
Stupid Cops and the Stupid People That Hate Cops
sfmc: sorry, i didn't make my story clear. that was the whole point of me getting angry (some nitwit asked me why I'd run a stopsign and risk peoples lives earlier...well, a California rolling stop is hardly risking lives, especially in a business park in Sorrento Valley with nobody around, but an occasional speed walker, and really, those people need to be taken out!) what my beef was with this officer (who was extremely nice) was that he lectured me for almost 15 minutes BEFORE asking for my drivers license, insurance, and registration. And, EVERY COP I've ever heard talk, said that if they stop you and start talking, the BEST THING you can do is be polite. That helps with possibly getting a warning instead of a citation. So, had I known I'd be getting a ticket, I would've cut him off and said, "Yeah, it was stupid for me to not make a complete stop. If you can just take my info back to your vehicle and get going on the ticket, that would be greatly appreciated." Instead, I sit there like a five year old, saying "yes sir," and all that crap, just on the hope that after his lecture he'll tell me not to do it again, and issue me a warning. And thanks to everyone, for all the detailed stuff on DUIs. Some interesting stuff I wasn't aware of. I only drink enough to get buzzed maybe a few times a year, and I'm not driving when I do that. If I ever drive after a few glasses of wine, though...and I get pulled over...I'm going to break out into a Carpenters song, and as the officer approaches with the clip board, my finger will approach my throat! (in Clevelands voice) "Oh, that's gross"— July 7, 2009 12:55 a.m.
Stupid Cops and the Stupid People That Hate Cops
SF: I did actually know that you didn't need to say the alphabet. But, really, you do. Because if you refuse, they'll take you down to the station. Whether you've been drinking or not, that's way more of a hassle. So, in effect, you do have to say the alphabet. The woman DID NOT have to give her age. And, she got detained with her hand behind her back. Someone mentioned police being "nice"...my friend Jack is a cop, he talked about him and a partner going into a house once. He took off his shoes, because he noticed they were Asian (and had other shoes on the porch). And he bragged about doing that (he has a tendency of bragging at times)...but I don't think normally, cops should have to consider all these things. One cop (that I met when he showed up at a noise complaint/party), told me that they got a call of kids playing video games and making too much noise. It was 3 p.m. on a Sunday. The cops were laughing on the way there, and when they pulled up, they couldn't believe how loud these teenagers were. So they told them to shut the window, and be a little quieter. Because it doesn't have to be 3 a.m. for a neighbor to complain about noise. And it doesn't matter that it isn't Slash playing guitar, it can be a voice on a loudspeaker, or just a large gathering. And, to say that a lot of people at the party saw the situation one way, really doesn't mean much. I mean, if there's a car accident, and it's one cars fault, but that car had four people in it. And the person that wasn't at fault was driving by himself...do you think the guys in the car would side with their friend/family member, or the other driver that wasn't at fault?— July 6, 2009 9:48 p.m.
Conspiracy Theories
Spliff, you say that I write just my opinions and not facts. Well, I'll give you a fact from your above rant. It's a myth about ostrichs putting their heads in the sand. And again, going back to hijacked planes, if I'm wrong in stating that most planes that have been hijacked in history, ended with the passengers being safe, after demands were met (or appeared to be met). Do the research.— July 6, 2009 6:47 p.m.
