Encinitas mulls ban on natural gas
We know how to eliminate global population growth and ultimately to gradually decrease human population over time. The first world has already achieved negative population growth, and the sole secret is the education and empowerment of women, including engaging them in political and industrial leadership and enlightening men about the importance of respecting them as equals. Our greatest environmental enemies are patriarchal governments -- generally archaic theocracies.— December 21, 2019 8:17 a.m.
Encinitas mulls ban on natural gas
OK, if I go to great expense to convert my "balanced power" home (gas cooking, water heating, space heating) to "gold medallion all-electric" (to use a marketing term from the early 1960s), where does that electricity magically come from? I am strongly pro-solar, but I am also very realistic about the limitations of battery backup and other electrical energy storage options, none of which are benign, cheap, safe, or even necessarily environmentally friendly. We need to explore biogas and other carbon-neutral ways of partially filling our natural gas pipelines; we need to work at recovering grassland from desert and forest from grassland. We do need to phase out coal, but going all-electric will slow this process, unless the political left wakes up to the fact that we desperately need nuclear to make this happen. The bottom line is that there is no one single simple solution and that a market economy and freedom of choice can work better than any government fiat, provided that we price in external adverse impacts and educate the John Q. Public about the consequences of choices made.— December 21, 2019 8:13 a.m.
Man Of La Mancha
We saw it last night and greatly enjoyed it. We have also seen two Sean Murray performances (North Coast Rep. and Cygnet), and it is fun to see various interpretations and twists -- all good. This is one of my favorite musicals, and this company did it justice. Highly recommended.— May 25, 2019 2:34 p.m.
