Farewell to a professional love
Don: A long-time reader here. Congratulations on a job well done. Your reporting has made a real difference. I bet we (your followers) could come up with a long list of malodorous transactions that you were the first to report on, or the only journalist to report on. I'll start the list: The shenanigans surrounding development of the Ballpark. I also must praise your ability to turn a phrase. "Taxpayer-financed giveaway" comes to mind every time I see another "public/private partnership" scam percolating. Jimgee PS Take care of that ticker. Been there.— September 27, 2018 8:37 a.m.
Prominent entrepreneur sues prominent judge
Don, If memory serves, Judge McConnell ruled that changes made to the Padres' ballpark initiative (Prop C?) after the voters approved it were not substantial enough to require a new vote. Terrible decision.— July 17, 2016 10:14 a.m.
Lucchino to leave Red Sox in shakeup
The Super Bowl ring came from the Washington Redskins. According to the Boston papers, Lucchino was a protege of Edward Bennett Williams when EBW owned the ' Skins.— August 3, 2015 9:50 a.m.
Swiss secrecy bolsters soccer corruption
Zimbalist just wrote a devastating takedown of the proposal to host the Olympics in Boston. I can't imagine what he would say about FIFA. http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2015/06/23/the…— June 24, 2015 11:14 a.m.
Yes…no...yes to public-financed sports
This morning, the local New England media reported that Lucchino and friends offered to buy the land for the stadium, instead of leasing it. They also requested a meeting with RI's governor. I'm not sure if this proposal is a plus or a minus for the taxpayers.— April 27, 2015 10:52 a.m.
Order in the court, Judge Bencivengo!
Don & Dan, I stand corrected. jimgee— April 16, 2015 6:57 p.m.
Order in the court, Judge Bencivengo!
This is how people of all ages lose respect for government. It seems transparently obvious that the ratepayers were denied a say in this matter, but those who are paid to do something about it (especially a judge), don't. I hope she does a better job with her final ruling. P.S. Don, thought you might find amusing the UT's coverage of this matter. I sure have. Every story I have read in the UT has left out any mention of Aguirre. Can't imagine why.— April 16, 2015 4:36 p.m.
Taxpayers on $271 million Petco hook
This is a case of the taxpayers getting exactly what they deserve. They knew, or should have known, that the ballpark proposal was too good to be true, that they were gonna end up paying more than expected, and they voted for it anyway. I have zero sympathy for the folks who voted in favor of that awful proposal.— February 14, 2015 1:09 p.m.
City contractor payments out of control, auditor says
OR modify the system so it will not accept entries without a contract number. This would mean no contracts created, no work recorded, no checks cut without a valid contract number.— January 20, 2015 2:28 p.m.
Warm weather or not, Coleman can't cool controversy
I thought Coleman was the best weatherman in the city. His forecasts were certainly the most accurate. I really grew to appreciate him when, time after time, his competitors played up the possibility of an El Niño, while Coleman gave us a definitive and accurate forecast: "No El Niño." But I suspect that his position on climate change is way off.— October 30, 2014 4:25 p.m.
