Is Bob Filner doing a good job as mayor?

What a breath of fresh air the new mayor is! Finally! A mayor that is actually interested in workers getting a fair wage. And I love the way he is standing up to the hotel cartel and the city council prez, letting them know it is not going to be business as usual. Hoooray! We may finally have elected a mayor who sees his job as doing what is best for the city and its residents, instead of throwing bones to the big dogs. Can't wait to see what he does next.

Cactus Loop Trail, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

It was on this trail, years ago, that I saw my first bighorn sheep. The ranger at the Tamarisk Grove campground there said a herd of sheep that stayed in the rocks above. It was not a close encounter; I had to use my binoculars to spot them, but it was a memorable thrill to spot the sheep that I had heard about many times and had been looking for, for a few years. There is another nice cactus garden down the road from the campground. Follow the signs to the Yaqui Well Trail and you will eventually come to the cactus garden. If you continue on that road, you get into Grapevine Canyon, which, if you are persistent, and **have 4-wheel drive**, you can work your way up to Ranchito, the small community up at the top of the mountains there.

You'd be surprised what a difference a border makes. But I hear what you're saying, Aa--I find it hard to believe that El Paso is the safest city in the US too. The report did say it was based on FBI statistics. Maybe the FBI is not notified about everything. Especially in Texas.

Todd Gloria still ready to move forward on Plaza de Panama Project

Todd Gloria may know where his bread is buttered, but he better remember where his bread is bought. I seriously doubt Mr. Gloria could give a flying fig about the bridge to Balboa Park and just wants to remain on the right side of Big Daddy Jacobs. I also believe the majority of Todd Gloria's district residents live around Balboa Park and they do not want to see this hair-brained idea go forward. What is wrong with these guys? There are so many other ways to accomplish the desired changes without altering Cabrillo Bridge, that I just have to think this is no longer a battle over "how we might get there,' but one of "who is going to get us there." In other words, we crossing the bridge on an "ego trip!" I don't know if it is too much to hope that some additional light is going to shine on this issue. A big, fat pile of money is hard to ignore, but the collective wisdom and experience of so many knowledgeable individuals, groups, and organizations is even harder to ignore. Mr. Gloria needs to take a breath, and maybe a walk in the park, and reconsider.

Jury decides against mother of girl killed in hit-and-run

This is why people have no respect for the law. The woman was not negligent when she hit and killed the girl? I guess you can be a responsible, upstanding citizen and still kill people with your car. One year in jail and probation for causing the death of another? The whole thing totally stinks. There has to be a lot we are not hearing.

I think the new seating idea is a terrific one. I wish they would incorporate it into more of the exhibits throughout the museum.

Man jumps from halfway-house window in Encinitas Ranch

I could be wrong but I don't think people at halfway houses are out pulling burglaries. Usually, people at halfway houses can get whatever they want whenever they want it; the challenge for them is not to. Hopefully, the counseling they are getting in there helps them make the right decision. I think the burglaries are just part of what is happening everywhere. The economy is tanking and people are getting desperate. I've had my apartment robbed. It totally sucks. You want to just smack somebody...but you don't know who? All you can do is double-check your locks and look for vulnerable spots and brace them up.
