Vail: Not Just a Ski Town

Well, you have to understand; there are people from the cities going up to these resort areas and after an exciting day of skiing or hiking or rock climbing, a hot rock massage at the spa, and a nice vegan organic dinner, they are grabbing a senior citizen on their way out of town as a souvenir! I mean, something has to be done.

What a fantastic story! Please do more like this, Elizabeth. I cannot think of a better example than Angie's to show how critically important these non-profit social service programs are. If it were not for programs such as Strive, people like Angie would be lost and and their lives wasted. Instead, we have a very happy, very competent professional, serving the residents of our communities and living a productive and prosperous life. You should be very proud of what you have accomplished, Angie. And all who had a hand in turning her life around should know many of us are extremely grateful for all that you do. I hope we see more stories like this one in the future.

Confidential email reveals Irwin Jacobs's powerful hand in Balboa Park project

Got that right, Monaghan. Jacobs, like many of the big dogs in SD, thinks his money buys him total say so, even over public lands and projects he deems worthy of his beneficence. The mistake these guys keep making is to confuse having lots of money with having wisdom--the absence of which is always so obvious. When will these blowhards learn that they will never get to lord it over the public, in spite of their billions, and in spite of their so called competence. I can easily understand Jacob's desire to keep "humans" out of the picture as much as possible--pesky damn things, wanting decent pay and nonsense such as medical insurance. Those chips in his cellphones never ask for benefits! I'm sure Mr. Jacobs is very disappointed with the people of San Diego who refused to shut up, genuflect, and allow him to proceed with his plans. Personally, I find it very reassuring to see there are certain things in this town that even the big dogs do not get to bite on, no matter how loud their bark or large their wallet. Three cheers to SOHO and all the other organizations and individuals who stood up to the big dogs....and won! Hip, hip!

People's Power Assembly decries police violence

It is about time people stood up to what has been going on. The police have no problem with shooting first and worrying about legalities later. There have been too many cases of unjustified lethal force being used under circumstances that do not remotely require it, and charges are never brought, or if they are, they are quickly dismissed. A few years ago, a woman and her 8-year old child were fired upon in a case of road rage by a policeman out of uniform, and the case ended with the woman being charged with assault and the officer exonerated of all charges. In another case, a 19-year old man, caught trying to illegally cross the border, tried to run and was killed, shot in the back by Border Patrol. It just goes on and on and in every case the shooter, always a member of uniformed services, is excused. Homeless man shot for wielding a stick against a police officer; others shot for reaching for their wallet. The circumstances would be considered absurd if they were not so deadly. Yet, nothing is done. The executioners are always excused. They "feared for their lives," or "feared for their safety," so they had to kill the unarmed woman, or the fleeing teenager. I get the impression these police officers are literally scared out of their wits...and so act witlessly and end up killing someone! And then they are not held accountable...and so the lesson is learned: shoot first and ask questions later. They really should not be in these jobs. It's disgraceful, inexcusable, and should not be tolerated, much less encouraged by findings of "not being at fault." If the unjustified use of deadly force is not being at fault then I don't know what is. I am so glad to see the issue finally getting the attention it deserves. I strongly encourage those involved to continue the momentum and settle for nothing less then complete justice for those who were murdered.

People's Food Co-op to expand – out of Ocean Beach?

I heard they are looking at the empty facility at hwy 15 & El Cajon Blvd. Used to be a "green" fuel station w/gas/ethanol/diesel/elec.hookups. Not sure what the location offers other than lots of parking and a presence in that part of town. I think People's wants to get out of OB and compete with the big boys: Whole foods & Trader Joe's.
