Stay weird, Ocean Beach
Siobhan, You always manage to find the most interesting and colorful people. I think when it comes to women, you can judge the book by the cover. You think? What I really would like to know though, is, what is the "beachy-boho coastal style"?

Watch it, bud
There are some excellent points being raised here. If, the good State of California, in its infinite wisdow...blah, blah, blah, and a doctor, licensed by the good State, says marijuana is legal and recommended for medicinal purposes, who the hell is the city of San Diego to say, "We are going to make it hard as hell for you to obtain it,"? This is just a case of blue-blood Mormon mentality trying to force its beliefs on everyone else. If the City wants to regulate things for purposes of safety and better health, then why don't they say bars and liquor stores should be located out in the middle of nowhere, away from schools, and playgrounds, and all those other places they feel are threatened by the presence of a marijuana clinic. There are more crimes and violent acts associated with alcohol than pot. The prisons are filled with people who did stupid things while under the influence of alcohol. Rarely with marijuana. The City Council needs to get back to doing things like improving public transportation, developing businesses and jobs and other things that enhance the lives of the citizens of San Diego, and stop trying to force their moral and ethical beliefs on others.

We're targeting bad behavior
Oh, this should be interesting. I'm not sure the bad boys (and girls) of OB are quite the same as the rowdy fried butter eaters at the County Fair or the sore losers at Petco Park. Crackheads, meth heads. and butt-head drunks can be a tad more challenging. But let's see if the fine, highly trained men and women of Elite Security are up to the task. Their recent success in the mallow wars gives one reason to be optimistic. The big question now is, who decides what constitutes "bad" behavior?

Near naked and unafraid of the SDPD
San Diego cops acting like thugs again? What else is new? The SDPD does what they damn please, including close body exams of local strippers and no one is going to do or say anything about it! At least not anything that will amount to anything. These are POLICE OFFICERS, and they can degrade and humiliate women any time they want. Checking dance licenses could have been done by one administrative officer, but hey--this is so much more fun! This is Sandy Eggo, Sucker. We don't need no stinkin' badges, but we have them because they give us license to kill, which is kind of handy. It's just like having the Mexican cartels, but without the drugs.

Bubble value
Don, I can't help but scratch my head wondering how people in San Diego can afford these house prices. I know there is a segment made up of wealthy retirees coming here from damn near everywhere, and that explains the coastal sales, but I've always suspected there is also the 2-person/3-income household that is largely driving the market. That's the recently retired 40-year old from the military, with 20 years in, pulling in a decent pension AND now working a new full-time job. The spouse works too and there you go: 2 people/3 incomes. And that's how people who do not have above average paying jobs can afford high mortgage homes. For anyone who does not have the that extra check, it's a real tough squeeze.
— July 21, 2014 11:43 a.m.
We’re not so dirty
The independent gas stations and the low-end chains are not using the vapor recovery nozzles, and that seems where many people are going to gas up. The other thing that would help greatly is better public trans. There are just way too many cars on the highway and the back ups at rush hour create tons of pollution.
— July 20, 2014 11:59 a.m.
Run silent, run the risk
I'm not saying someone should have the right to hit people with their car, electric or otherwise, but something needs to be done about these hell-on-wheels, hotrod wheelchair and scooter drivers. I sympathize deeply with someone who is missing a leg, or anyone who has disabling mobility problems, but I don't believe being in a wheelchair gives one the right to disregard a red light, orange flag flying or not. I have personally witnessed numerous instances--especially at University Ave. around the Ralph's Shopping Plaza--where these wheelchair and scooter speed demons believe the traffic has to stop for them regardless of the light. I don't know what they are thinking, but I suspect it is something like, "What are you going to do? Run me over?" Like I said, I do sympathize with their situation, but the cops need to remind these folks that a yellow light does not mean, "Go for it!"

Humiliation, emasculation, and “that goddamn monkey picture!”
Oh, emasculation still goes on, Scott. ShirleyB is right though, it no longer entails having your nuggies snipped. Nowadays it's called working on your relationship. Same results. Your mention of entering and leaving during the film popped a memory kernel in my brain. I distinctly remember doing that,..but it took me awhile to recall why it was considered no big deal: It was because the main reason we were going to the movies back in those days was to take advantage of the darkness and the tight seating and see if we could get to first base with our Love to end all loves. Hey, what was going on up on the screen was just darkness and light, but what was going on at the end of the left arm was heavenly dreams of pure goodness and delight. If you were going for 2nd, you sat in the back, last row.
— July 14, 2014 6:40 p.m.
No trolley dancing here, folks
That's one way to look at it. Another might be to consider that as a parolee, a job might not be so easy to find, with the record and all...Yea, I know, they should have thought about that in the first place and blah, blah, blah..regardless-- $2.50 fare might actually be a pretty big chunk of one's cash for the day. Fact is, the trolley fare is too high, for parolees and everyone else. What I'd like to know is how the hell are these people ever going to get back on the straight and narrow if we keep busting them for petty crap like riding the trolley for free? Is the name of the game to see to it that the only thing that will actually work for them is to do something criminal again? Because I don't see anyone doing anything to make it easy for them to go straight.
— July 13, 2014 12:28 p.m.
Down by del Rio
So, like...is this supposed to be a plot suggestion for the next episode of "Dumb and Dumber"? The mall manager says the deteriorating road "hasn't hindered business," and the DPW Supervisor of the Street Division says "he wouldn't be driving it"? Uh..are these guys members of the Big Lebowski Club or something. Why don't we just wait for the bridge to collapse and we can all meet at the river and share a doobie. I just love this town.

Stay weird, Ocean Beach
Siobhan, You always manage to find the most interesting and colorful people. I think when it comes to women, you can judge the book by the cover. You think? What I really would like to know though, is, what is the "beachy-boho coastal style"?— August 15, 2014 6:50 p.m.
The City Council needs to get back to doing things like improving public transportation, developing businesses and jobs and other things that enhance the lives of the citizens of San Diego, and stop trying to force their moral and ethical beliefs on others.— August 15, 2014 1:59 p.m.
The big question now is, who decides what constitutes "bad" behavior?— July 27, 2014 11:27 a.m.
It's just like having the Mexican cartels, but without the drugs.— July 22, 2014 10:14 a.m.
For anyone who does not have the that extra check, it's a real tough squeeze.— July 21, 2014 11:43 a.m.
We’re not so dirty
The independent gas stations and the low-end chains are not using the vapor recovery nozzles, and that seems where many people are going to gas up. The other thing that would help greatly is better public trans. There are just way too many cars on the highway and the back ups at rush hour create tons of pollution.— July 20, 2014 11:59 a.m.
Run me over?" Like I said, I do sympathize with their situation, but the cops need to remind these folks that a yellow light does not mean, "Go for it!"— July 16, 2014 7 p.m.
If you were going for 2nd, you sat in the back, last row.— July 14, 2014 6:40 p.m.
Because I don't see anyone doing anything to make it easy for them to go straight.— July 13, 2014 12:28 p.m.
I just love this town.— July 13, 2014 12:15 a.m.
