What a teachers union has done to Gompers
OpenMoon: You are very intelligent and definitely a go-getter. I wonder why some of your teachers have not advised you to take actual college classes to get college credit. I know many students that have dual enrollment, taking high school courses, and community college at the same time. San Diego Community College District has that program available. Also, you can take the AP exams without having to take the class. According to the College Board, you can take an AP test without taking an AP class. But if you decide to take an exam without taking a class, you might want to check out the College Board website for information about how the test is structured and what it tests. There are many options for College AP course work, and I know many have studied on their own and taken AP Tests and passed. Just because someone takes the AP class, doesn't mean they will pass the test. There is a lot of preparation outside of class, that is why the AP pass rate is low since just about everyone that is in an AP class takes the AP test. I would recommend finding the AP course you would like and find a teacher willing to help you prepare for this, either getting you the ap book thru the school library and then begin to repair on your own. Most students do this, as it's challenging to offer so many AP courses at a school. Union or non-union, will not make a teacher a better teacher. If you are a great teacher, then you are a great teacher, money won't change it. In 1991 there was a teacher at Gompers, that did not believe all students should be allowed to take advanced classes. The article "Outspoken Teacher Wins the Right to Return to Gompers" read this. It's very telling on how and what the Union does, and that is at Gompers. Why shouldn't all students have an opportunity for a great education, however, that one teacher had a different view. Hopefully, you will see and recognize the 15-year cycle of injustice. Gompers Preparatory Academy, under the amazing leadership of Director Riveroll, has changed South East San Diego, for the better. Can it become even better... Yes. Is the San Diego Education Association, Teachers Union, the one that will bring about the change you see? As I see it, SDEA Teachers Union has hurt, not only GPA at this time, putting teachers against teachers, students against students, and families against family..... They have hurt all schools in District E. So I am still trying to understand how the failure of the SDEA in MTM and Lincoln will then be a Success in GPA. I don't know. What I have read is GPA is the highest performing school in District E, and has the Highest Teacher Retention, until the SDEA was invited back on by one teacher. Why didn't that teacher help you get to San Diego City College and take courses there? I feel for all the teachers, staff, and students being used as Pawns for the SDEA Union. Politics are at work behind every game! Ask Mr. Richard Barrera...... GameMaster from the SDUSD— August 14, 2020 2:27 p.m.
