Was Dan Broderick Really a Model of Integrity?
His website says that Neil is past president of the "Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick". And on the board of the Padres. I like the Friendly Sons. I don't like the Padres management. Whatever. The only other time I've had the pleasure of meeting General Neil is in the elevator in his office building. He was berating someone for taking the elevator to the fourth floor rather than walking. Little did he know that the individual had just gotten off of crutches after breaking an ankle. And yeah, Johnny, that would be about right. He was a recently retired general at the time.— May 14, 2008 4:03 p.m.
Money talking
Pete Wilson... isn't he the guy who was monkeying with property tax rates to help out his Republican buddies when he got caught with his pants down by Prop 13? San Diego has been suffering financially ever since.— May 14, 2008 3:53 p.m.

JV, the Neil incident was at Dublin Square on St. Patrick's Day sometime in the late 1990's. I believe that was while he was still in the Marine Corps and not an upstanding citizen like he is now. (Not to slight Marines) About the only person I know who could vouch for the incident is my ex, and I'm pretty sure that she isn't going to be doing me any big favors soon. The black guys saw that Neil wasn't alone and chose not to make a scene. I was pretty shocked and told Neil that I thought it was a crappy thing to do. At the time, I didn't know who he was. To her credit, my ex dragged me out of the bar before Neil and I had further discussion on the subject. Next time you see him, you might simply ask if he has or had such a statue. You can fill in the blanks from there.— May 14, 2008 11:13 a.m.
Purported Ethics Commission Pulls Another Slimy One. This Is So Blatant It Could Backfire
Anon, which three mayors were the worst? Some claim Wilson was the best. Others claim that he was monkeying with property tax rates and got caught with his pants down by Prop 13. Wilson was also the father of the now infamous SPSP program.— May 13, 2008 7:36 p.m.
Local Media Not Mentioning Transgressions of Their Stars
Actually, I believe there was a story on Rod Luck this morning. Maybe you shamed them into it.— May 13, 2008 7:33 p.m.

Vice versa as well, Don. Whenever the CEO wants a new house, he claims the company is nearly bankrupt and the unions need to make concessions.— May 13, 2008 7:32 p.m.
Was Dan Broderick Really a Model of Integrity?
Actually, I think this is perfectly appropriate. I once saw Mike Neil walk into a bar and pull out a statue of a monkey playing the trumpet. I believe it played "Hello, Dolly". Neil then walked up to a table with three black gentlemen, slammed the statue on the table in front of them and said, "What do you think of this? Don't like it? Well, we don't like your kind here. Get out." Yep, the model of "civility, integrity and professionalism".— May 13, 2008 6:49 p.m.

Here's an interesting quote from the article Johnny Vegas posted, "The filling of this position would certainly appear to bolster the stance of the police, fire, and employee unions that the city really isn't nearly as broke as it claims, in which case it certainly wouldn't have even considered the folly of such a move!" Isn't nearly as broke as it claims.... now there's food for thought.— May 13, 2008 8:57 a.m.

Anon, Either you mis-interpreted what I said, or vice versa. I've been telling folks for a long time that money that should be funding public safety is being mis-directed. I was referring to the common perception that CAL FIRE and the USFS let fires burn for political reasons. That simply isn't true. At least not at the level I see it.— May 12, 2008 6:29 a.m.
Will Angelenos, Zonies stay away from San Diego this year?
Response to #6 Trying to build a good railroad from SD to Arizona broke more than one early San Diegan. Plus, rail takes a lot longer than driving. I agree with you in theory, but I'm not sure about the practicality. I'm also not sure that storage is the problem with our fuel prices. I've seen fuel a lot cheaper in parts of CA where there isn't a pipeline around anywhere.— May 10, 2008 6:29 a.m.
