Former U-T head keeps rolling around the desert
Historically I do think unions have traditionally done a lot of good leveling the playing field between workers and management - particularly in the first half of the 20th century. But frankly, nowadays I think there a lot of good reasons a lot of folks don't like unions, myself included. I can respect collective bargaining for better wages / benefits / working conditions. But I don't respect all of the asinine rules unions insist on which kill productivity - rewarding seniority over merit, making it near impossible to fire bad workers, etc. If I were an employer I would certainly take steps to prevent unions from getting much power. I think a company like Costco does things right - stop unions from forming by treating your workers well in the first place.— May 13, 2015 5:22 a.m.
Saltier than average environmentalists
Absolutely. Any serious discussion of water policy in CA should be primarily focused on agricultural users and other big companies (e.g. Nestle) because they consume the majority of the water. However they also have the majority of the political clout thanks to big BRIBES errrr DONATIONS to the government.— May 9, 2015 4:22 p.m.
If it ain't a craft beer, sue!
Maybe if I got to sentence Peevey it would be fun. Seems his punishment should be utility related. Maybe sentence him to a facility with no electricity service and make him provide the facilities electricity by hand-cranking a generator all day long? Well, maybe that's not quite 8th amendment compliant ... but it's a tempting thought.— May 5, 2015 10:21 a.m.
Commission of lies, company of duplicity
"Peevey has one alibi: he was not under oath when he made the utterance." So maybe he didn't commit perjury but it sounds to me like he was acting in a very unethical manner and was grossly negligent in fulfilling his responsibilities to the public.— May 4, 2015 1:01 p.m.

Well, Judge Bill rules this one is a frivolous case! But I guess I'll have to accept the decision of the real judge.— May 3, 2015 8:31 p.m.

From what I can know MMA is not scripted (like wrestling) nor is it prone to fixing (like boxing). But MMA has some problems contestants being involved with domestic violence. A fighter who goes by "War Machine" nearly beat his girlfriend to death - I think the trial for attempted murder is still going.— May 2, 2015 6:54 p.m.
If it ain't a craft beer, sue!
I agree it's a huge business and I am a big fan of San Diego county beers. I recently had lunch (and several delicious samplers - I love the grunion Ale) at Ballast Point's new location in Miramar. But I don't see how you could expect to win a lawsuit for somebody using a term in a different way than someone else. If the craft (didn't it used to be microbrew ) business community wants a special certification for craft beers than it seems like they could have a sticker or label that some organization certifies. Or have some sort of legal definition of "craft" beer. The term "craft" is too nebulous. It sounds like their definition is too nebulous. Look at this line: "uses only traditional or innovative ingredients." What is that supposed to mean? Isn't just about ANY ingredient either traditional or innovative? I'm no expert on either beers (other than that I really like them and I really like San Diego craft beers) or the law but to me it seems the term "craft beer" is too nebulous. I could be wrong of course.— May 2, 2015 4:57 p.m.

I think MMA has filled some of the void left by boxing's ongoing demise. In many ways, MMA is more brutal and violent than boxing but MMA might not have as bad of a long term effect on the participants (fewer punches to the head).— May 2, 2015 4 p.m.

A real law firm took this case? Apparently the claims that the recession has been difficult on lawyers are true.— May 2, 2015 3:55 p.m.

I guess they won't be able to take bets on the upcoming Pacquiao / Mayweather fight.— May 2, 2015 4:41 a.m.
