How will Qualcomm layoffs affect SD area?
I do get the sense that much of what CEO's do now is more trying to shift pieces around - keep business lines that make money, cut business lines that lose money, make sure the numbers in the books line up with Wall Street expectations. While I can see how those things should be part of the job I also think part of the job should be just trying to figure out how to make a better product more efficiently than competitors. I also think most CEO's now tend to be very skilled at lingo. I think a lot of terminology used tends to be euphamistic jargon as opposed to plain English. We hear things like "synergistic strategies" which sounds a lot fancier and nicer than "laying off a bunch of people".— August 29, 2015 8:25 a.m.
San Diego: Tech City, U.S.A., babies
So blue means LQ > 1.0 red means LQ <= 1.0 white = data not available Is that right?— August 29, 2015 2:58 a.m.

Greed and panic drive the markets they say. It also seems like these recent decisions were largely driven by these 2 forces. Greed by JANA to place the short term investment priorities over long term success. Greed by QCOM executives to continue accepting very large compensation while laying off thousands. Panic in that a highly successful company must be split up and be radically changed because a few quarterly expectations weren't met.— August 27, 2015 9:35 p.m.
San Diego biotechs bathe in stock market blood
I think the Chinese gov't has been propping up Chinese securities a lot and this correction was inevitable - you can't artificially prop things up forever. The Shanghai index is still higher than it was one year ago (at least at around 9:30 PM PST - looks like it's still dropping today).— August 24, 2015 9:36 p.m.

I had to look up the exact definitions of "disparity" vs. "inequality" to understand your point. I agree "disparity" is a much better word than "inequality". Some level of inequality isn't necessarily bad. There has to be some level of income inequality for market incentives to work properly. A disparity is an unfair distribution of income which is clearly a problem.— August 22, 2015 7:40 p.m.

Income inequality is a big issue now. I think there are a lot of savvy ways that income inequality has been covered up. I think the low interest rates and easy credit of the past few decades tend to mask the real problems somewhat. We are slowly boiling frogs.— August 22, 2015 3:32 p.m.

Lack of negotiation can be a good thing in some ways. I think a lot of voters are tired of candidates with campaigns carefully crafted to obey policies advocated by wealthy and powerful donors and to adhere carefully to politically correct speech doctrines advocated by many news media. I don't think Trump has negotiated with party leaders and big campaign donors from Wall Street, big corporations, media, etc and carefully selected his words and policy positions based on those negotiations. I'd be willing to be that Jeb Bush and HRC have. Trump and Bernie Sanders represent many voters who are fed up with the status quo of presidential politics.— August 22, 2015 8:58 a.m.
San Diego unemployment rate rises
Supposedly mid Sept is when QCOM starts laying off en masse. Maybe 2k or so in SD?— August 21, 2015 12:29 p.m.

So going with the trend - I wonder if anyone else has seen the musical "Book of Mormon" - from the South Park guys and Robert Lopez. It's not for the easily offended - the musical pulls no punches in making fun of the Mormon religion (as well as making fun of many other things). But I don't mind controversial humor and satire; in my opinion it was truly brilliant and hilarious.— August 21, 2015 9:50 a.m.

Perhaps KOGO should do a better job of vetting their weekend hosts. The lines between commercial and infomercial and talk show have been blurred.— August 20, 2015 4:53 p.m.
