It's not over. Chargers given time to woo San Diego
The lesson I take from today's events is that money talks. Many pundits were going on and on about how well liked Spanos was, and how disliked Kroenke (sp?) was. But Kroenke had the money to threaten to build his stadium even if he didn't win the vote - and he threatened a lot of lawsuits if he didn't get his way.— January 12, 2016 9:33 p.m.
It's not over. Chargers given time to woo San Diego
Per Steve Hartman's (1360 AM) comments after speaking to Fabiani and Spanos tonight (after the decision was announced) the Chargers are already starting to negotiate with Kroenke to be tenants at the Inglewood stadium. Although Spanos didn't want to be a tenant sharing an Inglewood stadium with the Rams, it sounds like moving in with the Rams is still preferable to the Chargers leadership than staying in SD.— January 12, 2016 9:25 p.m.
NFL oomph
Forbes has grossly underestimated NFL team valuations for decades - that can easily be seen by comparing Forbes valuations with actual sale prices for teams which have changed hands. Forbes' methodology is obviously wrong. Given the recent sales of the Dodgers and Clippers at around $2B I don't think it's a stretch to say the L.A. Chargers would be worth $3B - $4B. Maybe the owners of the Dodgers and Clippers overpaid but they've still established a precedent for valuation of L.A. sports teams that will be hard to undercut. I think any NFL owner of an L.A. team would laugh out loud at a $2.25B offer - unless that owner was completely desperate for cash.— January 6, 2016 9:39 a.m.
NFL oomph
Once the move is approved L.A. Chargers will have a valuation of > $3B, maybe even $4B. I don't see why it would be that hard to come up with $550M. If they have to sell a stake of the team they can sell a stake in the team. Or sell the whole team for that matter.— January 5, 2016 9:06 p.m.
Wire you sculpting?
I saw a few of these at Scripps Institute of Oceanography a few years ago. Really cool - I can't imagine the patience and talent required to put one of these up. Beautiful and unique!— January 2, 2016 10:33 p.m.
Fabiani goes to work for casino billionaire
I think Fabiani's initials are apt. He is truly an MF-er. (Delete it if you must!! - hoping I can sneak one past the censors)— December 27, 2015 5:57 p.m.
Mark Twain speaks again in St. Louis
I did a little more looking - apparently Stubhub Center was contacted by the NFL but didn't seem particularly interested in being a temporary host. http://www.latimes.com/sports/nfl/la-sp-nfl-la-co…— December 23, 2015 9:02 p.m.
Mark Twain speaks again in St. Louis
I question the word "need". Football is not a need. A want, not a need. I want to have an NFL team in San Diego, I don't need it. Personally, I can't justify asking other people to be forced to spend their hard-earned tax dollars on a want. I find it hypocritical that many Republicans, whose party claims to be in favor of limited government spending, actually are in favor of subsidies for wants like new stadia.— December 23, 2015 11:43 a.m.
Mark Twain speaks again in St. Louis
I think the Stub Hub center (soccer) is an outside possibility for the Chargers to play in next year. Big problem is that it only seats 27,000 which is way less than the NFL wants.— December 23, 2015 11:38 a.m.
