Democrats rule in lucrative Filner committee appointments
The video is fantastic. Go Filner! He knows how to debate and argue, he has the facts, he is thorough. This is going to be a great Mayor. http://granicus.sandiego.gov/MediaPlayer.php?view…— January 11, 2013 8:11 a.m.
Balboa Park controversy's Jacobs backs lavish Edwardian-themed KPBS funder
"the percentage of viewers who gave money to the station was low" I can only remember Gloria Penner and her lame political interviews with Jerry Sanders. KPBS will never get any money from me. But I like to watch D Abbey! KPBS seems to be where the local money class in SD congregates to collectively pretend that they are some kind of royalty. Not interesting, not interested.— January 10, 2013 6:46 p.m.
Mayor's protocol officer is daughter of Gregory Canyon solid waste magnate
Thank you Matt, for this thorough report. It's probably impossible to get elected in San Diego without getting the support of some of the ULI people, some developers, some lobbyists, etc. What I saw of the Filner backers in his campaign didn't make me happy, but still, I believe that he will not let his donors or appointees (from his donor list) call the shots. So far, looking OK in that regard!— January 10, 2013 6:38 p.m.
Filner ends pot dispensary crackdown; U.S. Attorney Duffy yet to respond
Very good, Mayor Filner. Thank you for dealing with the pols and the grandstanders in an open and Democratic manner.— January 10, 2013 6:33 p.m.
Democrats rule in lucrative Filner committee appointments
Thanks, LP. That's excellent info. I have no doubt that Filner, having served his constituents well and long in the House, knows how to deal with people who want to blur rules and confuse the issue. Filner will be well-versed in the regs and rules. And, he's got Donna! Gloria has practiced the art of obfuscation without challenge, and had better realize that he can't continue sleazing his way through. The City Atty's office is horrendous and plays the same obfuscation game, to whatever end serves their purpose, law and rules be damned. But Filner will deal with them all, I trust.— January 9, 2013 10:39 a.m.
Filner sticks to staff decision to deny Earth Day use of Balboa Park...for now
The EarthFair struggle has a history. It has more to do with Sanders, who gave permit-granting power to his admin staff, rather than with Park and Rec staff. The denial of permit is also primarily due to pressure by the museums' board and staff. The do not like having their paying customers diverted in any way. It's not just about parking problems. It's about what people do, and pay to do, when they come to the park. From 2011, for the 2012 permit: Date: Monday, October 10, 2011, 5:34 PM From: Chris Klein <[email protected]> Subject: URGENT ACTION REQUIRED: EarthFair at Risk! Dear XXX, When we attempted to obtain a date for EarthFair 2012 from Balboa Park staff, we were told that the park WOULD NOT ISSUE A PERMIT FOR EARTHFAIR as it had the previous 22 years. Ultimately, after doing much research, we wrote a letter about our findings (read the letter: http://earthdayweb.org/Download/BP_EFLetter.pdf). We were subsequently informed that they WOULD issue the permit. However, it was clear from this action that there are powerful forces at work in the Balboa Park community that want to see that EarthFair is forced out. Now, it has just come to our attention that tomorrow, Tuesday, October 10 at 2pm, Item 332 will come before the San Diego City Council that, if passed, would allow city staff to deny the permit for EarthFair in Balboa Park. If you care about EarthFair, and want to be sure that it continues to be available in Balboa Park, immediate action is required: 1) Show up at City Council tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct 11 at 2:00pm: 202 C St, San Diego, CA 92101 Fill out a speakers slip (you don't have to speak) and say that you oppose Item 332; and that you support San Diego EarthWorks' comments (see below) and want to ensure that EarthFair remain in Balboa Park. 2) Fill out a San Diego City Council Meeting Agenda Comment Form on the web: http://www.sandiego.gov/city-clerk/officialdocs/d… 3) If you live in the city, call your councilperson's office, request that they oppose Item 332, and demand that they support EarthFair in Balboa Park. Visit http://www.sandiego.gov/citycouncil/ for Council phone and email info. We apologize for this last-minute action, but the stakes are high. San Diego EarthWorks - and the tens of thousands of citizens of San Diego - thank you for your support. Democrats rule in lucrative Filner committee appointments
Thank you for this reporting, Matt. Compared to what can be read about this elsewhere, your account is informative and unbiased. The reporting of the closed door meeting and of Filner's subsequent statements provides a broad picture of the proceedings. It seems that what happened is a great example of how good, honest government should and can work. And compared to "elsewhere," your link works! The enmity toward Filner, as expressed in the always slanted headlines and reporting elsewhere, is disheartening. You remember: the elsewhere people loved their "Gentleman Jerry." They can't handle a truly strong mayor, primarily because he has a D after his name, and their main line of attack is constantly and tiresomely to portray him as uncouth/abrasive/disagreeable. That Sanders screwed over the residents and neighborhoods for his entire reign matters not, to the elsewhere reporters; that he did it quietly and politely gave him a pass with them. Not where I live.— January 9, 2013 8:30 a.m.
Channel 10 Airs Mayor's Deposition in Crime Case Tonight
Or maybe this is the best quote for Mr. WT, substituting "Mayor" for Shakespeare's "Moor": For that I do suspect the lusty Mayor Hath leap'd into my seat; the thought whereof Doth, like a poisonous mineral, gnaw my inwards; And nothing can or shall content my soul Till I am even'd with him, wife for wife, Or failing so, yet that I put the Mayor At least into a jealousy so strong That judgment cannot cure. Othello (2.1.315-22)— November 11, 2010 8:13 a.m.

#17, "Riiiiiiiiing" Agree, it was just a terrible, embarrassingly amateurish report by the local ABC news team ...but you got it give it to'em, they provided a nifty ring-tone for the line "then his phone started ringing." As you know, I'm hoping they ALL go down, plaintiff and defendants, and Mr. Wrongful Termination is exposed for going along with the crookery until it looked like he had an opportunity to get even for being left out of the powerseat. That blew up on him, and anyone who saw him on ABC last night should figure out why: he is not too bright. I mean come on...both he and his lawyer spoke incoherently, ungrammatically, and whined. They seem well-matched. I might point out, Don, that Mr. Wrongful Termination is one of those government workers who came aboard in 2006, as mentioned in your great article on the 2006 economy and government pay vs. private pay. His government salary was more than he was worth, more than he could have ever earned in a competitive private-sector job. And far less than his former buddy was raking in in the privatized-tax assessment business. How many fond fools serve mad jealousy? The Comedy of Errors (2.1.116)— November 11, 2010 7:52 a.m.
Will Uptown Partnership Dissolve?
The entire Parking District concept is a huge sham and scam. Contracts with the numerous groups in the business community, emanating from CPCI's Economic Development division, have been a colossal joke for years. Donald Shoup, indeed. Anything that will disable this give-away of money that should go into the General Fund will be a great move forward. And anything that will disable and upend the most corrupt, useless, wasteful San Diego department, CPCI, headed by Bill Anderson and Beth Murray, will be the beginning of the end of everything that is wrong with San Diego.— November 8, 2010 7:18 p.m.
