Qualcomm puts big bucks in offshore havens to avoid U.S. taxes
Maybe some of that stashed profit was in Cyprus...— March 23, 2013 9:39 a.m.
TMD puts 2014 funding requests on indefinite hold
Yes. Local contracts would be an interesting thing Mayor Bob could promote, in addition to living wages.— March 9, 2013 4:08 p.m.
TMD puts 2014 funding requests on indefinite hold
Thanks, Don, but I haven't a clue who the current recipients of TMD contract revenues would be, other than ConVis. For the record, ConVis has a full-page ad in the March *Sunset* magazine (a smiling girl in bikini: *San Diego - HAPPINESS is calling*). ConVis, using the $18 million "grant" from TMD in FY 2010-2011, gave $9,100,047 to an out-of-town company (MeringCarson, Sacramento) for ad design/media placement. MeringCarson still shows ConVis as a client on its web page (meringcarson.com) and if you click the ConVis box, you get to watch a happy video and hear the snappy *HAPPINESS is calling* tune, which ends by directing you to sandiego.org (ConVis). Watch it while you can, before the money runs out!— March 9, 2013 3:23 p.m.
TMD puts 2014 funding requests on indefinite hold
The last IRS filing was for the year ending 6/30/11. For that reporting period 15 organizations were listed as "contractors" receiving "grants" from the surcharge revenue (total ~$23 million). The bulk of the grants, ~$20 mill, went to ConVis/ConVis North. Have you seen the list of the 17 orgs now on hold?— March 9, 2013 12:44 p.m.
Assault weapons ban to be discussed at an upcoming committee meeting
Good for Alvarez. At least one councilmember does something positive. Mayor Bob has his back on this, too. Can't imagine which councilmember would be against this.— March 8, 2013 3:14 p.m.
neighborhoods/south-park -- South Park
This is priced too high, about twice the avg for the street. A La Jolla developer-flipper picked this up cheaply and rebuilt it so that it now has a suburb-style yawning garage door facing the street. It has that sickly fertilizer-green lawn that developers think is necessary. Anyone who pays the flipper price will find themselves under water soon enough. History repeats. If it goes for a bit more than $5K, the flipper will be lucky and still make a great profit.— March 8, 2013 12:02 p.m.
In Filner case, tangled tale of four GOP leaning judges

In Filner case, tangled tale of four GOP leaning judges
Matt, What kind of legal/political record does Judge Ronald S. Prager have? His tentative ruling on the TMD validation suit s/b posted by 4 pm today.— March 7, 2013 8:52 a.m.
Todd Gloria, staffer, hotelier and spouse signed nomination paper for judge who ruled against Filner
Judge, mayor, attorney, and council positions are nonpartisan. But. The importance of nonpartisan elected officials' **associations** is clear. Todd Gloria is known to be a Dem, but if he aspires to election to a state-level Dem office in the future, he will not have hard support of local Dem voters. For many years he has associated with Republican activists; his political philosophy is clear. His below-the-radar support of many Republican candidates and his non-Dem attitudes on many issues are on the record. Party labels don't matter, but actions do. His actions related to Mayor Filner are contrived, not just philosophically contentious or opposite. Rather, Gloria intends to wound, weaken, and destroy Filner, purely for the goal of attaining a support base among the local monied Repub powerbrokers. Gloria is a grubby ladder-climbing weasel without any party ideals. His only label is the Party of Todd.— March 7, 2013 8:23 a.m.
In Filner case, tangled tale of four GOP leaning judges
Yikes. Two thoughts: My wife would've snatched him bald. Oh. Wait. He is. It's really, really hard being a judge in San Diego and keeping strait on the law and politics. And on where you've placed, or may someday place, your allegiances.— March 5, 2013 4:41 p.m.
