Something fishy on Halloween

Joe, these are the daily totals from all the San Diego landings. In print, I total the counts for the week. Online, I also pick a boat from each landing to represent the catch from inshore half-day runs to long-range trips. I will start including more of the 5+ day trips as we are entering the winter long-range and local ground fish season. Either way, I try to give a complete representation of what's going on out there. Thank you for the comment! Tight lines!

We need the beach break

If we changed the signage to reflect the truth, that you can access the ocean from, and return through, the restricted areas to fish outside of those areas, then It might make it a little more clear to those who think they are in the right to 'harass' anglers utilizing the safe approach spots for human-powered vessels. I think, citing the abundance of and expansive growth in popularity of, SUPs and fishing kayaks, that they need stay out of the reserves. Bummer to lose such a good spot, but it will benefit the area around the reserve in the long run. There is still lots of good fishery to enjoy and the fight, though costly and lengthy to this point, has settled in a good balance for the angler and the environment. If opened to human-powered boards and 'yaks only, the new stealthy fleet of vessels would pick the reserves clean. With increased population and effect on the environment, we need to change with the science if we wish to leave this great fishery to our grandchildren. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2014/s…

On January 1 Tourmaline becomes state marine reserve

Now, three years after this article, you can get the idea. I have been kayak fishing for 20 years now, in San Diego since '97. In the last ten years the explosion of the fishing kayaks and SUPs would guarantee the demise of the Calico Bass, among other species in these easy to get to spots. I get it. My folks grew up diving the cove. My grandparents on both sides fished and camped on the beaches from Torrey to Ensenada. As the population grows, so does our need to protect our natural resources. Your little private Idaho would be chock-full of the inexpensive plastic molded stealthy fish-killing machines that are flooding the market now. Your healthy little fishery would be in trouble. I can understand surf fishing not being an issue, but then I don't sit there with 3 oz weights and surf leaders and buckets full of what-ever-ya-catch. I'm a pure light-line carolina rig sand-crab tossin' corbina huntin' fool and I think fishing for migrating croakers, surf perch and corbina should be ok... but then you have to monitor it and that's more money to have DFW guys making sure nobody is long-casting chunk bait at baby Calicos. Just deal with it like a man and know the fishery will eventually be healthier proximate to the MLPA reserves, just like the La Jolla kelp beds. Without the reserve, that place would be dead. I would like to see them change the signage to state that it is okay to launch and paddle through the reserve and return through the reserve with fish caught outside the reserve. Trust me, DFW is watching from somewhere..so are the lifeguards. they'll know if you are in the reserve before you are there long. But launching geared up for fishing, or returning to the beach through a reserve with a nice fish or two caught outside the reserve is not illegal. At the La Jolla "launch ramp", people pretty much know this, but in some cases, anywhere, frothing lunatics that know nothing about the local fishery will threaten you with citizens arrest and certain prosecution, even physical violence.
