San Diego's Christmas trash piles up after Republic Services strike
Republic should pay their workers better *and* address their safety concerns. That doesn't excuse Todd taking vacation for weeks while the garbage piles up and asking the public to email them instead. Where's the leadership? Would everyone be letting Kev-boy off the hook if he was still mayor?— January 6, 2022 5:15 p.m.
San Diego's Christmas trash piles up after Republic Services strike
Looks like Mayor Shigelloria isn't happy with just one public health disaster: he's adding a rat and roach infestation to his list of accomplishments. Why isn't he using his union pull and power of office to fix this, rather than asking the public to [do his job for him][1]? San Diego's sewer and water rates due to climb
Excellent catch, Founder. Could you post photos of the notice and postage cancellation from the envelope it came in here? However, not sure where the "bike routes" reference is coming from?— October 1, 2021 12:40 p.m.
Ex-Charger set for $1.35 million city payout in police brutality case
Disgusting all around. A measly $1.35 million is about what he would have [made in one year][1] had he been able to continue up the roster, but now out of our pockets. The city's lawyers got paid more — with our money. And how much are the at-fault officers costing us now in salary and overtime, not to mention in future settlements — again, with our money? Infamous Las Vegas name behind $1500 in Gloria post-election cash
Of special interest in this zero-out statement is the "Win Bonus" of $50,000 to Gemini Group, Jennifer Tierney's one-stop-shop for Faulconer and all the other Establishment types since 1999, https://geminigroupconsulting.com/clients. Far from the hat-in-hand pleadings of other politicos for fundraisers to retire legal proceeding debt, seems everyone simply knew how much was needed to contribute for Gloria (three+ months after the election) to cash out to the House without fanfare. Thanks to Matt Potter for turning up the old dirty money still circulating. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2021/a…— April 12, 2021 9 p.m.
National City says no to marijuana
> Commissioner Yamane recommended denial "based on finding that the land use is not a desirable or necessary use." What is it about those in appointed positions (and members of the public) thinking that their personal opinion — if not outright bias, as it seems in this case — take precedence over the will of voters? California legalized marijuana for medical use 1996 and for recreational use in 2016. Long past the time to replace these and other non-functionaries who refuse to do their job.— March 17, 2021 12:42 p.m.
There goes the Oceanside beach
Curious all the people piling on here to attack the writer, *The Reader*, the media, the Coastal Commission, the Surfrider Foundation — anyone and everyone, that is, **except** the deadbeat Oceanside millionaires squatting on land they don't own and those enabling them. Doesn't matter how much one pays for a home or where: your rights are never absolute, and end at the property line/the public right-of-way. It is no more acceptable to rip out the sidewalk in front of your home in University Heights to keep pesky pedestrians away or to build out from your backyard into Balboa Park than it is for these self-important greedheads to annex a public beach. That this should be so obviously self-evident is why I have to suspect many of those defending them *are* them.— March 12, 2021 11:30 a.m.
The fight against 5G cell towers moves to Oceanside
All valid criticisms of 5G. The [health effects of this technology][1] are internationally well-documented. But all the industries that will profit from this massive infrastructure—and the need to replace all current devices—have too much to gain from letting a pesky thing like public health get in the way. Unless enough people get educated and demand action from our elected representatives, we will be left dealing with a situation as dangerous as coronavirus, but with no ability to socially distance. Lorena Gonzalez law damages local workers
I'm unpleasantly surprised by the comments so far. A law supposedly enacted specifically against tech giants operating businesses that require workers follow all their rules like employees but use their apps to do it, has also netted actual independent contractors in traditional niche occupations. And it's not clear it wasn't also intended to do that. Excusing the overly broad interpretation of AB5 and its lack of nuance—especially given the evidence presented here that exceptions carved out of it have been contingent on lobbyist money and not logically objective criteria—is the equivalent of "kill them all, and let God sort them out."— February 19, 2020 6:28 p.m.
The dirty tricks of North River Farms
Excellent reporting. Sounds like these citizens need to get a good [anti-SLAPP][1] attorney. And given how they have coordinated their dirty tricks, the whole cabal of Sutton lawyers and their clients should be charged for racketeering.
