Widow of Steve Jobs Gives $25,000 to Tax Measure Also Backed by Wealthy San Diego Donors
Thank you to Laurene Powell Jobs for stepping up to help save lives and stop kids from smoking! For those of you buying into the tobacco company lies being spread in the media, you should know that only 2% of the funds raised from this tax can be used for administration expenses. That amounts to about $15 million per year. As a point of comparison, Phillip Morris' CEO, Louis Camilleri, received a total pay package of $21.6 million in 2011 according to the Securities and Exchange Commission. More money to one guy killing people versus $15 million to be devoted to investing in cancer research. Is this really that hard of a decision?— May 22, 2012 8:33 p.m.
Big Tobacco Spends Big On Ads Against Tobacco Tax
Tobacco is responsible for about a third of all cancer deaths. Think about all the billions of dollars in health costs and lives wasted as a result of tobacco. We all pay some of those costs because smokers ultimately need a significant amount of medical care due to their habit, and those of us who do not smoke subsidize their care. It is time to pass on more of the cost to the source of the problem - tobacco. Unless of course you want to continue to shoulder the costs smoking causes for the rest of us through higher insurance premiums. Pick a side - tobacco companies who are bankrolling the opposition, or health charities whose mission it is to find cures and eliminate suffering. Not a tough choice.— April 24, 2012 7:46 p.m.
