February 28 rally ratches up the celebration and pressure
On the last Saturday of February, the 28th, the weekly Action For Iran demonstration transformed into to a celebration of United States military action. Since January, demonstrators have been showing up on Balboa Avenue, in the Clairemont area nearly every week.
Some of the protests in San Diego reportedly had crowds as big as 2,000 attendees. In later weeks, attendance dropped below 1,000, at least until Saturday's event.
Signs included messages like "Thank you President Trump" with a great deal of MAGA merch on display as well. I arrived after 1:30pm and there were already many early arrivals. Among the hundreds of demonstrators, a woman approached me that I had photographed at a previous demonstration. She was wearing a Trump cap and was enthusiastically volunteering to be photographed again. Of the six protests I have covered on Balboa Avenue, I have seen her at every one of them.
Many Iranian-Americans believe that the Islamic regime does not represent the beliefs of most people in the country. Nader Afshar, an Iranian-American, believes that Islam has had a negative impact on the country of Iran. "Islam is a cult," he told me. "Iranians are fake non practicing Muslims, 80% don't want anything to do with this religion that was forced on our ancestors via rape and pillaging. 47 years of theocratic Islamic rule has ensured that Islam will have an exodus out of Iran."
Afshar is nostalgic for what Iran was like before the Islamic revolution took over the country. "We were advanced, like Europe. Anybody that was somebody used to come there. Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Anthony Quinn, Neil Armstrong, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5."
Passersby showed their enthusiasm for the demonstrators. I saw a car waving the previous flag of Iran, the one from before the Islamic dictatorship took power.
Nader Afshar commented on the long wait for United States military action: "I was getting really frustrated, after 50-100,000 Iranians got slaughtered after Netanyahu and Trump had been telling Iranians to come into the streets, that they would be protected. Better late than never."
Many Iranian-Americans are grateful that Donald Trump has used the military with the goal of toppling the Islamic regime. His "YMCA" theme song (by the Village People) can frequently be heard playing while Iranians dance. Afshar says the use of the song is to honor Trump: "That was an homage to president Trump, because he likes that song and we wanted to show our appreciation to him."
There were attendees proudly holding American flags. They seemed happy that the United States is fighting against the government that oppresses their people.
Afshar commented about the turnout. "It started at 2 and went to 4. We had some celebrities from L.A. and Orange County. It got pretty busy at around 3pm."
The crowd size reached around 2,000 at maximum attendance. "it will be ongoing weekly until Iran is liberated," promises Afshar.
