An estimated 40,000 people were marching throughout San Diego over the last weekend in March, with protestors carrying signs expressing multiple outrages directed at Donald Trump, his administration, and his policies. Events were held downtown, Chula Vista, El Cajon, and elsewhere.
People were bringing their protest signs with them as they exited trolley stations throughout San Diego county. What people were holding or wearing indicated where they were going to. Of the 16 locations throughout the county, Waterfront Park downtown seemed to be the most popular destination.
I photographed the protests at Waterfront Park first, and then in El Cajon. Although the marches we promoted as No Kings rallies, there were also attendees targeting ICE, the Iranian war, MAGA, MAHA, and I saw constant references to allegations of illegal activities connected to sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

The protest was scheduled to begin at 10am, but many people showed up early. I got downtown before 9:30 am and there were already hundreds of attendees. As the day went on, the estimates got as high as 10,000. It felt like being at Comic-Con with that number of people downtown.

With what some people wore, they would not be out of place at Comic-Con. Captain America's shield a popular symbol of resistance to tyranny.

When people consider a political leader to be authoritarian, it is common to compare the person to fascists and Nazis. Adolph Hitler was frequently mentioned on signs, probably because people associate him with cult of the personality and dictatorship that results in mass repression.

This protest was the first where I've seen the flag of Iran being displayed. Despite opposition to the war in Iran, this seems uncommon.

The butterfly is frequently used a symbol by protesters against ICE. This is because Monarch butterflies migrate over vast distances, just like immigrants do when they come to other countries.

We're a long way from the 1960s, but signs still appear at protests repeating that evergreen hippie mantra "Make Love Not War."

Someone displayed a homemade missile, possibly referencing the missile attack killed many children at a school in Iran. The missile had an actual Trump quote printed on it alleging that the Tomahawk missile could have come from Iran (a country which does not have access to Tomahawks).
Another sign - "Tylenol is Safer Than Tyranny" - mocked Trump's quote about how dangerous he thinks it is to take Tylenol. Trump's administration has linked mothers using Tylenol with children getting autism, a scientifically debunked claim with no basis in research.
Inflatable animals were once again prevalent. It's hard for MAGA to characterize a protest as hateful when the event is full of colorful cartoon characters.

After No Kings officially started, more young adults showed up.

Wrapping yourself in the California flag is a way of showing pride in the state where you live.

There were two attempts to impeach Trump in his first administration. Many protesters hope that the next time he will be impeached. It is a widespread belief among war opponents that Trump is using the Iran War to distract from allegations against him in the Epstein files and other impeachable crimes.

Having the peace symbol on a flag shows that people are still inspired by the protest movements of the 1960s. A woman held up a sign that said No One Is Coming To Save Us. Politicians have disappointed people across the political spectrum. There is a growing sense that the public needs to lead change throughout the world, since our leaders are failing in this task.

After the January 6th riot, many people thought that Donald Trump and his MAGA political movement were over as a significant factor in politics.hey were wrong.

Human rights violations committed by ICE remain a frequent protest point.

One of the reasons that there is opposition to the United States being at war with Iran is the prevailing feeling that our country should fix our own problems before meddling abroad.

The crowd circled back to Waterfront Park but there was still massive numbers people behind me on the streets of downtown.

The protest in El Cajon mostly took place on the sidewalk outside Parkway Plaza. There were also some people protesting near Home Depot. Protesters against ICE have heavily targeted Home Depot, since ICE has targeted the home improvement chain for detaining suspected illegal immigrants employed with home and lawn work and purchasing supplies. Parkway Plaza has been a protest site on a regular basis since 2025, where people regularly show up on Thursday and Saturday mornings.
