Fruits Bats is an indie folk-rock band with elements of retro-inspired dream pop. The group is led by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Eric D. Johnson, a founding member of Grammy-nominated folk collaboration Bonny Light Horseman, which he formed alongside Josh Kaufman and Anaïs Mitchell. He was also an early member of Chicago experimental rock band Califone, and he toured and recorded with The Shins for several years. With Fruit Bats, he has scored numerous radio and online streaming hits, including “The Balcony,” “Humbug Mountain Song,” and “When U Love Somebody.” They have a new album this month called The Landfill, preceded in April by a single for “Think Aboutcha” and a music video for the title track.

This year’s 8th Annual San Diego Smooth Jazz Festival was designed as a fully immersive two-day sensory experience with many offerings other than music. A wide array of cuisine will be available for attendees to enjoy, with festival-style dining and gourmet food trucks, as well as specialty cocktails, beer, and other craft beverages. Curated pop-up food and beverage kiosks will feature local So-Cal restaurateurs, alongside vendors selling artisanal craft and merchandise. The music lineup includes world-class jazz, soul, and funk artists, hosted and headlined by saxophone icon Eric Darius, whose new single, “Maputo Nights,” is currently streaming online. Saturday’s bill features Rebecca Jade, Boney James, Bob James, Acoustic Alchemy, Brian Simpson, Kim Waters, Andrea Lisa, and Jessy J. Sunday’s lineup is headlined by Darius, supported by Lalah Hathaway, Najee, Pieces Of a Dream, Oli Silk, and Lin Rountree.
